The history of the South African Armed Forces traces back to its establishment as the Union Defence Force (UDF) in 1912. During World War II, South Africa contributed significantly to Allied operations, notably in East Africa, North Africa, and Italy, where they utilized British and American armoured vehicles such as the Crusader and Sherman tanks, as well as domestically produced armoured cars. Following the war, South Africa began to develop its own military doctrine and equipment, partly due to self-inflicted isolation during the apartheid era. This period saw the establishment of the South African Defence Force (SADF) in 1957, which aided in modernizing and expanding its armoured capabilities.
During the 1960s and 1970s, as regional conflicts and international embargoes intensified, the SADF developed a robust domestic armoured vehicle industry. This led to the creation of iconic AFVs such as the Ratel infantry fighting vehicle, the Eland armoured car, and the Rooikat armoured reconnaissance vehicle, designed to meet the demands of bush warfare. These vehicles were extensively used during the Border War (1966-1989) against guerrilla forces in Angola and Namibia. Following the end of apartheid in 1994, the newly formed South African National Defence Force (SANDF) continued to operate many of these vehicles while also focusing on peacekeeping missions across Africa, evolving in to one of the premier armed forces on the continent.

South Africa’s current implementation as a British sub-tree is detrimental to both South African and British armour enthusiasts. South Africa has become the de-facto light tank line for GB, meaning that British light tanks that should have been in the game years ago are still absent (Saladin 90, Scorpion 90, Simba 90, Scimitar, etc etc). As well as this, it means the there is very little room remaining for South African vehicles, who have an abundance of domestic armoured cars, tanks destroyers, and heavily modified MBTs left to add.
Jordan and South Africa, while not as close as say Sweden or Finland, do share a close relationship and have done for a considerable time.
In 1946, when Jordan as a country was formed, South Africa was integral to the defense of the fledging country, with the bulk of their armour being South African-built Marmon-Herrington armoured cars. During the Cold War, they shared a great deal of technology, co-developing the Falcon unmanned 120mm turret for the Challenger/Centurion tanks for example. Following the end of the South African embargo, in 1992, Jordan was the first Arab nation to re-establish diplomatic relations with South Africa.
In terms of vehicles, Jordan provides a unique selection of early armoured cars, as well as some heavily modified MBTs and IFVs that compliment South African vehicles well.
Spoiler
With South Africa already existing as a nation within Britain, there will be difficulties moving them to be an independent tech tree.
The two options to achieve this would be:
-
To ‘retire’ the existing South African vehicles in the British tree, so that they can still be played by players who have them researched but for future players they will be moved to the new tech tree (this is how it was handled with the Swedish Centurion in the British tree when Sweden was introduced, or the Italian planes in the German tree when Italy was introduced).
-
To remove the vehicles from the British tree and transfer full ownership to the independent tech tree, giving players who have them researched a head start in the new tree. This would prevent the British tree from becoming bloated but it may be controversial.
Please let me know what you think about all of the above!
