Broken HUDs (+HMDs + Cockpit MFD Issues)

Many HUDs in this game are missing features or are just completely broken. Many bug reports have been made over these issues and rarely is any of them fixed. Here’s a list of the ones I have found that are still not fixed.

Original Topic Here - Can we get cockpit TGP screens working properly?
Currently the TGP MFD screens in cockpits serve no purpose at all despite them being very important in military aviation, mainly for targeting guided air to ground weapons and for target identification. But in-game they simply don’t work.

In-game we still lack the controls to use the TGP from within the cockpit which limits the ability for VR users to use air to ground weapons as the dedicated TGP view is disorientating even for experienced VR users.

All TGP cameras take the zoom level of any IR/TV guided weapons that are equipped which leads to target ID to be non-existent.

I made a report on this issue here.

TGP MFD's all have atleast half of the gimbal limit of their respective TGP's which make it harder to see if you are still guiding your weapon successfully to the target.

I can’t find a bug report about this but if anyone has got one or can make one and leave it below I will add it in here.

On the F-14B, Kurnass 2000, Su-34, and the British/Italian Typhoons there are built in cameras meant for target acquisition and identification, TISEO for the F-14B, F-15E+LANTIRN and Kurnass 2000, Plantan Optical-Electronic System for the Su-34, PIRATE for the British and Italian Typhoons, and FSO-IRST for the Rafale. In real life these systems serve as both targeting systems for various air to ground and air to air weapons and for identifying targets however they are useless at identifying targets.

F-14B TISEO on target at 1km

Since the TISEO screen on the F-14B is just a TV seeker screen pasted in it completely blocks out the target making it only useful for within 500m by which point the job of target identification can by done by just looking at your target.

Looking at the TISEO on the F-15E with the LANTIRN pod the difference in just the screen layout is massive. Can actually make out the target from nearly 7km away.//

I made a bug report here about this but nothing has come of it.

Kurnass 2000 TISEO doesn't lock onto radar targets at all and also lacks the MFD screen for the built in camera to be useful for the player if this did work correctly


A bug report was made, here ,which was marked as being fixed and 2 years later it is not fixed.

Su-34 Plantan system doesn't work on targets that are soft locked with TWS but do work with full radar locks.

British and Italian Typhoon's PIRATE system doesn't track locked targets from both radar and IRST when it should.


Also they are both missing the MFD screen showing the view from the PIRATE system which it should have, here’s a bug report made about this which was “Forwarded as suggestion”, whether we actually see this in the future or not is up for debate as half the the issues “Forwarded as suggestion” are just abandoned and left to rot.

Rafale's FSO-IRST is meant to have the capability for tracking targets locked by the IRST and Radar however once again it doesn't


This is despite this bug report being closed by a bug reporting manager as “It can track target in the game” which is a complete lie.

If there’s any issues I have missed please tell me below and I will add them to the list.

Hopefully @Smin1080p_WT, @Stona_WT, @Gunjob, @Schindibee or any other forum CM/ Gaijin presence can push these issues further so they get fixed and are not left to rot.

Every single HUD in game, that has sight modes, breaks when you expend all AAMs before using all A2G weapons

TBH I don’t think any of the HUDs are actually right… the WWII Reticle isn’t correctly sized to mark the distance - I think they’re supposed to be adjustable as well

The modern HUDs are basically 3 steps above Microsoft Flight Simulator but are no where near their real life counterparts (missing tons of info and not adjustable).

I’d like them to be better but for the most part they’re pretty good, just not a real life representation and you have to work around things a lot.

I lack the means to compare, but I definitely also feel the japanese props’ reticles feel… stretched? Like, it’s too large and weirdly textured to the point of being unusable.

Yeah they all seem ok but just not right, I think the gunsight on the P-51’s were able to be adjustable to help with aiming on targets further away. Not sure if any others had that feature.

essentially, with aircraft that have HMD/S , when you are looking straight forward, the HMD/S takes over still so things like manual CCRP target points or AAM boresights are near the top of the HUD

I’ll add that one too, seems weird since the HMD should turn off when looking forward in cockpit view.

Yeah, I think it use to but stopped in Firebirds I think. At least I never recall having an issue in the Gripen prior, but with the GR4 I did and when I looked back at the Gripen it also had the same issue. Typhoon doesnt seem quite as pronounced, but doesnt feel totally right either

I think it’s absurd what’s happening in realistic battles; they are totally unbalanced. It’s unanimously ridiculous that you have to face an F15 with AIM 120 missiles that don’t lose their lock like an angry mother, while you’re stuck with a Gripen equipped with outdated dogfight missiles from the 70s/80s. Additionally, you have to deal with the ridiculous and overpowered R27 missiles from the Russians. The armament should be balanced. In Tier 7/8, you face planes with missiles where you have no countermeasures, and you need to dance like a striptease muse to escape; otherwise, it’s a guaranteed kill for the enemy. This makes you pay-to-win because a Sheikh from the Arab Emirates can simply buy these heavy planes and massacre the players, who are mostly poor!

well I’m sure the Japanese also had adjustable sights - the adjustment would be for “Wing span” and should mean the circle (in the case of US) is whatever circumference you set (i.e. 40 Ft) and when you get the wings within that circle, touching the edges, and you’ve correctly calculated the aircraft’s wing-span, it should be at whatever distance you’ve et for your convergence (which is also adjustable from the cockpits, but that’s another story).

Modern aircraft in WT now have nice, functional HUDs in many cases, and more and more of those aircraft are joining our hangars every patch, but all of those HUDs are lacking in ONE fundamental aspect: The correct displaying of flight path marker and attitude.

The reports are either aircraft specific or general, more or less complete and informative, but they all say the same: FPM and/or horizon / attitude lines are NOT working correctly in War Thunder, and should be fixed.

Please note that the issue is not restricted to only the aircraft listed in the bugs above, but really a common issue with all HUDs in WT which IRL feature the display of a flight path marker and/or horizon/attitude lines. As far as my experience goes, not a single HUD in WT has a correctly working FPM, and also the horizon/attitude lines of the HUDS don’t work correctly in many cases.

Precendent:

Ironically, the game DOES have a correctly working flight path indicator and horizon line / attitude ladder: The “HUD-only” view features exactly that as pale white lines, with the VV showing at low speeds and gear down, e.g. during finals…

Note in the A-7 vid, especially noteworthyand explaining the “how it should be” best is the sequence where a landing approach is shown (11:20 onwards): One sees very well how the pilot can use the FPM to determien the proceted flight patch, and thus in the case of landing, where the aircraft will touch down.

Here it’s very well visible how the FPM is not “fixed” to the centerline of the aircraft, but shifts constantly, as also the flight path deviates constantly from the centerline.

Please note that those two videos were filmed by the aircraft’s HUD camera, which has a lower and more forward viewpoint than the pilot obviously, which results in the horizon bar actually shown with a slight upward offset relative to the landscape.

Pleas enote also that the way the Flight Path Markers is pretty much standardised in western aircraft. This obviously to facilitate transition of pilots from one type to another. The industry of cours strives to always create standards for gauges and displays, so they’re easily understood and interpreted correctly by everybody.

Sadly however - contrary to the rest of the gaming industry where correctly working FPS and horizon/attitude display on HUD’s are the norm - in WT we don’t seem to care or worry about implementing this correctly…
