KKK 50x Turkish Ground Forces Tech Tree TSK 50x

Thunder in the Sky, Tanker on the Ground

We have been working on finding a proper solution for the implementation of Turkish Ground Forces Tech Tree to War Thunder and now with the addition of Israeli Tech Tree Gaijin gave us best possible way to work on. After the initial release of Israeli TT, I have started working on my own project but it was rather sloppy and nowhere near of being a proper tech tree. After sometime finally found people who also were working on their own, and with our collective efforts here we are now presenting latest iteration of our Turkish Tech Tree Project, lo and behold:

Description

The Turkish Ground Forces Tech Tree consists of 5 main research branches just like any other tech tree in the game. There is also sixth Sub-Branch which consists of Turkish vehicles modified, offered and/or tested by Kazakhstan. We have focused on including in-service vehicles to Research Section as much as we can but to fill the gaps we took the liberty of adding prototypes, demonstrators, test-bed and some one-off vehicles so it safe to say the tech tree is mixture of in-service (or ex-service) vehicles and prototypes. Of course we reserved most of the prototypes/one-off vehicles to Premium Section while trying our best to not hinder the research section from any unique or interesting vehicles. Premium Section consists of three branches (its not like the number of branches are important), it mostly houses prototypes, test-beds, specific vehicles, rare modifications, one-off offers and export models with/without success. Vehicles within the tree consists of combination of unique, modified or outright copy-paste vehicles. Please do note that, uniqueness might be relative term, so please do not start any heat about this matter.

For the time being, tech tree starts from Rank IV, much like Israeli counterpart, and has vehicles all the way down to the Rank VII and we have plans to move some vehicles up to Rank VIII once Gaijin introduces Rank VIII to Ground Forces. You should note that, tech tree is not finalised yet, some vehicles might be added, removed or moved within tech tree. Also more important note, take the BR arrangement of the vehicles with a grain (maybe with a pack ? lol) of salt since some of those vehicles are pretty modern machines and their specifications are classified (do not worry I’m not willing to leak any documents) or do not have proper counterparts to decide fitting BR. You are very welcomed to states your opinion about BRs of vehicles as well as overall Tech Tree.

The Tech Tree

As I’ve stated, tech tree consists of two main sections; Research and Premium (just like any other conventional trees), I’ll provide photographs of vehicles, maybe a brief info and relevant suggestions links if they are exists. Currently there is total 71 vehicles in Research Section, 44 vehicles in Premium Section and total of 114 vehicle in whole Tech Tree.

  • M47 (28. Mknz.P.Tüm.Tnk.Tb)

M47 Patton in Turkish Service. This specific example is famous tank thanks to its interesting background story, I thought adding a famous divisional tank (like Italian ones) would be appropriate since there was no other proper option. I tried to trace this specific tank’s unit as much as I could, still It might be exactly right but that is most I could. This M47 is currently “preserved” as monument heights of Pentadaktylos/Beşparmak Dağları.

  • M60TM (VOLKAN-M)

M60T Main Battle Tanks received extensive upgrade in overall protection, situation awareness and firepower with Fırat Modernization Project. However, fire control unit of M60T, Elbit KNIGHT III fire control system , could not be upgraded as VOLKAN-M fire control system was still under development. Fırat Modernization Project completed without integration of VOLKAN-M fire control system and left M60TM to rely on ageing KNIGHT III fire control system. In May 2022, ASELSAN completed development and qualification tests of VOLKAN-M fire control system and single M60TM was fitted with VOLKAN-M fire control system as test bed. M60TM successfully completed live-firing tests against both static and moving targets.

  • T-72 Shygys

T-72 Shygys is deep modernization of T-72A by ASELSAN. Modernization includes ROKETSAN’s BADGER Armor Package, ASELSAN sub-systems such as SARP-NSV, new Fire Control System, Laser Warning Receiver and CITV. Shygys is first iteration of ASELSAN T-72 Modernization solution and revealed during KADEX 2016. Essentially, Shygys is earlier iteration of KAE with heavier side armor. Main difference between KAE and Shygys is the side armor, while Shygys has ERA/NERA packages on hull sides, KAE only has slat armor. This change is probably made due to budgetary reasons or weight limitation. Do note that, neither Shygys or KAE is an official designation.

  • M60A3 (MZK Prototype)

M60A3 (MZK) is modernisation effort of ageing M60A3 fleet with ASELSAN sub-systems and ROKETSAN Armor Package and MZK (Modular Armored Turret) Turret. This is the very first M60A3 mated with Modular Armored Turret and it lacks hull armor package as shown in ROKETSAN’s catalogue. It will probably receive hull armor soon. Considering IDEF is ahead, we hope to see it in full form, as well as its designation. In the form, much of the critical equipment is missing like CITV, Gunner’s TV Sight, SARP RCWS and likely on its way to receive them. There is also question of power pack but I doubt it will be changed at least not for this prototype. I’ll assume as if sights are fitted as they’re most critical components not yet fitted, RCWS though could be left out. Everything will be updated once information becomes available.

This package is also a contender to be the solution under TİYK programme, considering Turkish Armed Forces received this prototype for testing purposes, it is quite likely.

Removed, Replaced and Unused Vehicles

Sub-Branch and Possible Nations

Thanks to Turkish Defense Industry’s wide portfolio of customers there are many interesting vehicles, modifications and modernisation that could be included in the Tech Tree. As you may have realised, We’ve included some of those vehicles, even there is a Sub-Branch consisting of such vehicles. Our reasoning behind adding other nations is simple, country of interest should have a Turkish-built vehicle or Turkish origin modernisation and modification on existing vehicles. Kazakhstan is prime example, there is only Turkish origin vehicles in Kazakhstan Sub-Branch. Nearly all of vehicles are either modified vehicles tailored to meet Kazakh Ground Forces’ needs or tested by them. Future additions of related nations’ vehicles will be following this suit.

Currently there is two nations vehicles in the tech tree beside Turkey; Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan. Other significant contenders are Indonesia, Malaysia, United Arab Emirates and Morocco at the present.

Kazakhstan Sub-Branch

Kazakhstan is the perfect example of how a Sub-Branch should be, its a blend of unique vehicles of Kazakhstan and Turkish upgrade packages. Albeit amount of vehicles Kazakhstan offers somewhat limited, those vehicles are unique and related to Turkey/Turkish Arms Industry in one way or another, also cooperation between Turkey and Kazakhstan is increasing so there is room for new addition in the future.

  • ** MT-LB (IMLS)**

In Kader 2018 ASELSAN showcased their capabilities and a capacity to modernising Soviet equipments. MT-LB is one of the vehicles which ASELSAN was modernised with their cutting-edge technology. This MT-LB is fitted with ASELSAN’s Igla-Missile Launching System effectively turning it into a deadly short-range anti-air vehicle. Reason behind this addition is that we are trying to allow Kazakhstan Sub-Tree to create plausible line-ups. It would perform as Soviet version of ATILGAN with similar capabilities. Since it is folder behind ATILGAN it does not make the grind difficult if don’t want to use it.

Future Prospects

Turkish Defence Industry is expanding at an enormous speed, new products appears quite frequently so there is always for room to expand the Ground Forces Tech Tree, as well as other branches. Currently there are few projects that could be added in War Thunder would be revealed in physical form quite soon. We try to avoid projects which are far from reality, will be avoiding here too. So here are few projects that would enhance the tech tree.

Work-In-Progess Projects & Designs

ASELSAN Pantsir Concept

In this year, ASELSAN’s two new projects images surfaced online. Both of these projects were hybrid air defence platforms, one of them was unique design of ASELSAN while other one was similar to Pantsir. In fact, it was literally Pantsir with Turkish sub-systems and weaponry. Even the platform of system were similar to Pantsir-S1 captured in Libya and delivered to Turkey.

Although there is no official specification for the system, we can still eyeball and point differences. We can list possible differences as:

  • Radar

First off radars, ASELSAN’s Concept has different radar than Pantsir-S1. RS1-E1 Early Warning Radar is replaced with ASELSAN MAR (Mobile Search Radar) Mobile 3D Search Radar. MAR offer superior range over RS1-E1, 70 km vs 30 km while being more compact with lower profile. 1RS2-1E target acquisition and tracking radar is also changed with ASELSAN product, AKR (Atış Kontrol Radarı/Fire Control Radar) fire control radar. AKR is also superior to 1RS2-1E in terms of range, while 1RS2-1E offering 18 km of tracking range, AKR Block-A1 offers 30 km effective range.

ASELSAN MAR 3D Search Radar

  • Cannons

Pantsir-S1 has 2A38M twin 30mm auto-cannon, this also seems to be replaced with indigenous option. By the looks of it, ASELSAN’s Concept has Oerlikon/MKE KDC-02 35mm auto-cannon. In comparison, both weapons are quite formidable in their own specialties. 2A38M offers incredible rate-of-fire with 3,900-5,000 rounds per minute which means 1,950 to 2,500 rounds per minute for each gun. KDC-02 on the other hand has 1100 rounds per minute with 550 rounds per minute for each gun. What gives an edge to KDC-02 is its caliber and ammo choice, KDC-02 not only has access to more powerful AP rounds but also ASELSAN ATOM 35mm Air-Burst too. As an anti-air vehicle, ATOM is an incredible power factor against any kinds of air threats.

  • Missiles

This is where things gets complicated, missiles are not visible in Concept’s drawings, so it is kind of hard to make any assumptions over them. Though, Turkey has comparable missiles to Pantsir-S1 95Ya6 missiles. Other similar system form ASELSAN, GÖKDEMİR uses Ground-to-Air version of GÖKDOĞAN Air-to-Air Beyond-Visual-Range missile and/or Ground-to-Air version of BOZDOĞAN Within-Visual-Range Air-to-Air missile. GÖKDOĞAN’s air-to-air range is speculated to be between 65 to +100 km, ground based version on the other hand is expected to have range of 30 to 35 km. BOZDOĞAN’s air-to-air performance is somewhere between 25 to 30 km, ground based version would have 10 to 15 km.

ASELSAN NHS (Nokta Hava Savunma/Point Air Defense) ASELSAN GÜRZ

In IDEF 2023 this system revealed as GÜRZ, so I’ve marked part related to NHS under spoiler, it still remains if you wish to read. I’ll post pictures once IDEF starts officially.

ASELSAN NHS (Nokta Hava Savunma/Point Air Defense)

ASELSAN NHS is another hybrid air-defecen system concept from ASELSAN. NHS, unlike Pantsir Concept, has more unique look, from weapons system to platform. Much like other concept, this one also does not have any official information but it is not hard to spot indigenous systems.

Systems:

  • Radar
NHS is equipped with two radar systems; AKR Radar on top of GÖKER Turret System for target tracking and acquisition and AESA Radar with 360° coverage for target search. It is unknown which AESA radar are those, so specifics cannot be determined. If we were to take along shot, it might be ground-version of recently revealed assault boat radar, ARDA AESA.
ASELSAN AKR Fire Control Radar

Blank

ARDA AESA

  • Cannon
Weapon platform of NHS seems to be modified version of GÖKER 35mm Multi-Purpose Weapon System. GÖKER is armed with Oerlikon/MKE KDC-02 35mm auto-cannon alongside missiles. GÖKER offers flexible firing arc with +95⁰ and -35⁰. With access to ATOM 35mm, GÖKER is highly effective systems against air targets.
GÖKER Multi-Purpose Weapon System

  • Missiles
NHS is armed with two different kinds of missiles to engage different kinds of threats. 4-Launcher Tube on the right side of the weapon system, it is likely to house long-range missiles such as BOZDOĞAN and GÖKDOĞAN. On each side of the 35mm auto-canon, there are 4 more missiles. Those are seems to be short-range missiles and quite likely SUNGUR MANPADS/Short-Range Air Defence Missile. For better view of short range missiles, you can check frontal view of NHS:

  • Chassis
Unlike other concept, this one makes use of indigenous platform: Anadolu Savunma Seyit 8x8. Seyit 8x8 has maximum payload of 28 tons, with Cummins 600 horsepower Diesel engine it would be highly mobile vehicle. At maximum payload of 28 tons, Seyit 8x8 would have 21.4 hp/t which is crazy for such vehicle.

M60A3 Modular Armored Turret

ROKETSAN Modular Armored Turret integration to M60A3 is an ongoing project. We’ve seen M60A3 mated with MZK but it was lacking hull upgrades such as ERA units, Driver’s Vision System and APU. Alongside missing hull upgrades, turret was lacking sights and SARP RCWS but those were probably would be fitted somewhere else as ROKETSAN only provided the turret. Whole upgrade package would look like this and I believe this solution is going to be chosen in TİYK project to modernise Turkish M60A3 fleet.

T-72NG

T-72NG is ROKETSAN’s solution to modernise Soviet T-Series Main Battle Tanks. Just like M60A3 Modernisation Solution, T-72 received ROKETSAN’s state-of-the-art turret system Modular Armored Turret (MZK), Reactive Explosive Armor, Passive/Composite Armor as well as ASELSAN’s sub-systems such as SARP Remote Control Weapon Station, TLUS Laser Warning Receiver, YAMGÖZ 360° Surveillance System, CITV and new fire control system. MZK differs from the one integrated on M60A3, it has different armor scheme, lacks bustle-autoloader and has 125mm Smoothbore Cannon instead of 105mm Rifled Cannon. By the looks, this system is quite similar to one offered Kazakhstan except for the new turret. Future of the project is not certain, but according to ROKETSAN’s brochure there is one potential customer for this package.

Possible Additions in Far Future
There are some vehicle that could not be add to War Thunder as they would require additional mechanic in-game. Those vehicle are generally anti-air vehicle which require additional Radar Systems alongside firing units. Considering NATO countries are running out of autonomous short and middle range air defense vehicles, such mechanics does not seem to be that far off realm of possibility. There is also close air supper factor, as planes, drones and helicopters getting more modern, need for such system will be more obvious in future.

HİSAR-O

HİSAR-O Medium Altitude Air Defense System is a contender for such vehicle. It is not an autonomous unlike HİSAR-A Autonomous Short Range Air Defense System. HİSAR-O is organised in battalion and battery level. Batter level requires Fire Control Center Vehicle, Radar Carrier Vehicle,
Electro-Optical System and Missile Launching System.

HİSAR-O has three types of missiles options:
• HİSAR-O Medium Altitude Missile with range of 20 km
• HİSAR-O⁺ Medium Altitude Missile with range of 25 km
• HİSAR-RF Medium Altitude Missile with range of 35 km.
Note those ranges are estimations and might not be accurate.

In current state of the game, non-autonomous vehicles has no place. In the future though, if it is decided to bring such system with a balanced mechanic, HİSAR-O is a quite good contender.

GÖKDEMİR

GÖKDEMİR Air Defense/Missile Launching System is a medium-long range missile defence system built on Anadolu Savunma Seyit 8x8 chassis. GÖKDEMİR is another good vehicle which falls into this category. GÖKDEMİR ADS/MLS is armed with total of 8 or 12 ready-to-fire missiles. Much like HİSAR-O, GÖKDEMİR requires additional radar units either AİC/KORKUT-FCS or HİSAR Fire Control Center.

GÖKDEMİR has two types of missiles options:
• BOZDOĞAN Within-Visual-Range Air-to-Air missile with range of 10 to 15 km
• GÖKDOĞAN Beyond-Visual-Range Air-to-Air Missile with range of 30 to 35 km

Rank III and Below

Turkish Armed Forces first met with tanks in Interwar Period. Despite not having large armored forces, Turkish Army acquired number of different tanks and armored vehicle to examine and integrate in its ranks. Number tanks never really reached level of Allied or Axis, but Turkey managed to get their hands into both sides technology. Number “unique” vehicles quite limited in already limited number of vehicles. Since Turkish industry was in shape to produce/modify tanks around that time, much of the lower tiers are basic C&P vehicles.

Do note that, Rank I-VII and Rank IV Onward Tech Tree project are not exactly same, they should be considered in their own sense. Neither Tech Tree is precursor or continuation of other.

For who?
Turkish sub-tree wouldn’t properly fit anywhere and would be a waste of great potential.

So far, this is might be the greatest projects in that type, I hope it comes into reality, o7…
