Japanese Weapons Master Thread

image

Hello! this post will serve as a place to cataloge and discuss weapons used by post war Japan for the JASDF, JGSDF and JMSDF I will cover both domestic and foreign options. Japan has many weapons however my focus will be on missiles/bombs etc. If people can give me info on Japanese guns and cannons, shells used then I don’t mind adding them but I am not that knowledgeable on them. Inspiration for this comes from the “British Weapon Systems” thread.

(WIP will update op soon)

note due to the nature of how hard finding info on Japanese related equipment is some things will either be estimated or simply left with a “?”.

AAM-5A/B

Spoiler

This was a further development of the Japanese IR missile family. Unlike western nations such as Germany, Britain and U.S which received access to the R-73 and thus started their own developments, this missile was completely separate from that event, In fact Japan was already looking into a thrust vectoring highly maneuverable missile to succeed the AAM-3 many will be quick to call this a “IRIS-T copy” but this missile was in development and in service before the IRIS-T.
Entered service: 2004
Mass: 95 kg (209 lb)
Length: 3.105 m (10.19 ft)

AAM-4/B

Spoiler

This was Japan first domestic radar missiles with the AAM-4B being the worlds first missile with a AESA seeker. Performance is hard to get info on but it most likely is a very capable fox 3 missiles. Some features of these missiles is having ECCM, Ability to be guided by IRST, apparently faster time to go pitbull compared to AIM-120 and saving as much energy as possible, others is the ability to intercept other air to air missiles and cruise missiles. With the AAM-4B being very hard to defend against.

Bombs

Spoiler

GCS-1

Spoiler

Now the bombs themselves are not domestic they are just regular MK.82s and JM117s for example. but the kit that can go on these bombs called GCS-1 is a domestic modification that turns these into IR Anti-ship bombs. While there is debate on if they can be used against ground targets their effectiveness is questionable.
Entered service: ?
Mass: 240.0 kg
Length: 280 cm
Diameter: 25 cm
Operational
range: 18.5 km
Guidance
system: IR
platforms:
[F-1], [F-15J], [F-2], [F-4EJ Kai]

XGCS-2

Spoiler

Not much is known about these they apparently are smart bombs potentially either gps or laser but no known numbers exist. it was tested on the F-4EJ Kai but they are apparently dummy bombs.

Foreign Weapons Section
Air-To-Air Missiles
For the AIM-120s, since 2014 Japan has requested to buy AIM-120s these proposed sales are confirmed by US DoD’s DSCA and from the looks of it the majority have been approved according to separate articles. Actually in the articles specifically the 2020 and 2022 it mentions that Japan already has AIM-120s in inventory and in the 2014 article they specifically mention AIM-120C-5s.

How to tell the AAM-4 and AAM-4B apart. The 4B missile has 3 rows of screws and a wider panel area near the radome

Also note the Basic AAM-4 is actually never referred to as “A” but I called it that to determine both versions.
