The Kh-38MT may not actually exist

Due to recent findings regarding the true nature of the French AASM Hammers IR seeker function, I’ve been looking into the Kh-38MT and its seeker to determine if the missile that has been the scourge of ground battles, and the least balanced air to ground missile ever added to War Thunder was in fact capable of tracking moving ground targets. This hunt for info on the seekers functionality however lead me to begin believing that that Kh-38MT does not actually exist.

First of all, the evidence for the Kh-38MT existing:

  1. KTRV (the manufacturer) and Rosoboronexport (the export company) have had the Kh-38MTE on their brochures in the past.
KTRV brochure discussing the Kh-38ME missile family:

Now, the evidence for the missile NOT existing:

  1. The Kh-38MT has NEVER been photographed or videotaped. There is only a single mockup that has been seen twice afaik.

  1. Mockups of the Kh-38MT have never been seen in the “new” Kh-38M layout seen at MAKS 2017. Notice the new clipped wings for internal storage in the T-50/Su-57, replacing the old folding wings seen on the older mockups of the Kh-38M’s.
MAKS 2017 Kh-38MLE:

MAKS: Tactical Missiles Corporation shows Kh-38 changes - Russian aviation news

  1. The Kh-38MT has never been said to have been used in combat despite the Kh-38ML being used extensively (I cannot post a link to this due to WT forum rules regarding not posting active war footage/info, but it is very easy to find).

  2. Afaik, even the mockup for the Kh-38MT has been absent from defense expos for years, if not over a decade (last picture I have a solid date on is from 2009)

  3. The in-game model for the Kh-38MT is not even based on any mockups of the Kh-38MT, it uses the model of the MAKS 2017 Kh-38MLE (SALH seeker)
(This appears to be incorrect, the MAKS 2017 moclup appears to have been an MTE according to new information)

Model company that appears to have p4oduced the Kh-38ME model for MAKS 2017 claims it to be an MTE:

  1. Even the latest brochure for the Kh-38MT DOES NOT HAVE a picture of a real Kh-38MT, instead using 2 (frankly poor) computer generated images of the theoretical missile. Of note; gaijins model for the Kh-38MT does not even use the latest “model” used by the manufacturer for its brochure.
KTRV Kh-38MTE brochure from MAKS 2021:

  1. Rosoboronexport’s webpage of products does not list the Kh-38MTE as a product, ONLY the Kh-38MLE. All mentions of the Kh-38MTE or of the existence of an IR homing head as a guidance option have been removed from the website.
Rosoboronexport website:

All in all, I have scoured the internet for days trying to find ANY proof that the Kh-38MT is a real missile, and anything that discusses it can inevitably be traced back to sourcing either a past KTRV or Rosoboronexport brochure stating that the Kh-38MT is an option for the Kh-38M family of missiles. There has been no physical proof provided (that I can find atleast) beyond the outdated brochure that the missile actually exists and is functional.

From what I can gather, the Kh-38MT was likely a proposal for a weapon that has not yet been built and requires further funding. I dont think it has even gotten beyond the drawing board and made it to the testing stage, since if it had, they would presumably present a modernized mockup of the missile or the manufacturer would at the very least have an actual picture of the thing instead of needing to use artist renditions of the supposed missile for brochures. Its even possible that all alternate homing heads for the Kh-38M family of missiles have been cancelled, and the class renamed to the Kh-38ML, since the Rosoboronexport website has deleted all info regarding alternate seekers for the missile (they used to offer the MTE for IR, MKE for satellite, and MAE for active radar homing options om the webpage, all 3 have been removed and all mentions of those guidance options purged).

In my opinion, the Kh-38MT is almost definitly a paper weapon much like the Flakpanzer 341 Coelian that was removed from the game for not being a real vehicle. Though the missile body and warhead my exist, the seeker never has, and as such, the option to use it in-game should be removed. Not only would this be the most realistic implementation of the missile with current available information, it would also be of massive help for game balance, and would follow the precendence of the removal of weapons that were never functionally built.

Considering this, here is a poll, just to gauge what the community thinks of these findings and what should be done about it:

What should be done with the Kh-38MT in-game considering the information provided above?
  • Remove it from the game!
  • Keep it in the game!

If someone has additional proof the Kh-38MT does or has in fact existed operationally, please do provide the proof of it in the comments!

I literally have a brochure for KH-38

Yeah, ive seen this brochure, theres still no proof in it that the Kh-38MT actually functionally existed. There isnt a single picture of the actual missile in there, and as stated in my post, the current rosoboronexport brochure has removed all mention of the MTE and its IR homing head as an option.

This is literally why I wrote this

The brochures of KTRV and Rosoboronexport are literally the only “evidence” of its potential existence, and are likely more of a sales pitch or something they planned but never completed.

Imo “a defense company wrote it down and made some drawings of it in the past” as the literal only proof of its existence is about the shakiest bit of “evidence” out there.

Even then, same issue of the aasm.
Not sure its for moving targets.
It could use the same technology of the aasm and just use the IR for better accuracy on static targets.
There is notjing about moving targets in there

not sure of that would help, but i do have the designation for its seeker head: 9-Б-7738
its a grau index, source:

Yeah its written on the mockup actually, but I could not find any additional info on the seeker beyond that, so I’m not sure if it actually ever existed either.

Its also definitly not the seeker on the in-game model visually

I think gaijin just got confused for the in-game model cuz the Kh-38MLE mockuo from MAKS 2017 (what the MT in-game is modelled as) has a different looking seeker than the production Kh-38MLE, so maybe the devs thought it was an MT.

could be confidential tbh
i will take a deeper look into it a bit later since i know russian

There is something about hitting moving targets in the Brochure that i have but that is talking about KH-38 as a whole so could be talking about the L

I did go through russian sites to try to find more info and found nothing, but if you do find anything, id appreciate you sharing it! :)

Maybe @Smin1080p_WT could show the snails sources/Pictures that the KH-38MT is real and more than just an mockup and an real weapon instead

I have a souce stating the Kh-38M missiles CEP is “several meters” and the inability to hit stuff directly is made up for by the size of the warhead, but it was from a pro-russian blogpost and didnt have any sources backing this claim up so I didnt wanna add it above. Does kind of line up with the fact the Kh-38 is stated to have an 80% chance to hit a target with no jamming though. 80% chance to hit under ideal conditions is pretty bad…

The missile class has always been claimed to be able to be used vs armored targets, but it was never specified which Kh-38M could be used vs armored targets. The original theory was that the Kh-38MT’s seeker was like the AASM and used IIR to improve accuracy of the missile against static targets in a GPS denied environment, with the laser guided ML to be used vs mobile targets, but the more I dug for info trying to figure out if the MT could hit moving targets, the more I realized the only evidence the MT even existed was the brochure mentionning it, which is what ended up leading to this post

PLEEEEEASE tell me they remove it, it is soooooo annoying

Assuming that the KH-38MT/MTE actually does not exist and was restricted to being only a mockup AND Gaijin decides to keep it in game:
It is only fair that other nations get such weaponry as well. For example:

PARS 3 SAL

Range: 10Km

MBB Jumbo

BIGG Maverick

Thats a can of worms I hope they dont open.

Best thing for the game balance-wise would be to remove it, the fact its likely never been more than a mockup, and seems to have even been abandoned as a project just reinforces that case.

seeing as it is on an F-14… yeah… better not open this can of worms lol

Yeah lets not go there

The Kh-38MT is real, but rare, with almost zero public imagery and no confirmed combat footage*.
I think it’s probably produced in small batches, maybe used quietly or reserved for stealth aircraft like the Su-57.

Why so little evidence?

A few likely reasons:

  1. Very limited production: IIR seekers are expensive, and the MT variant may be produced in smaller quantities for specific targets or aircraft (e.g., Su-57 internal carriage).

  2. Russia’s OPSEC: Unlike Western militaries that often share HD footage of precision strikes, Russia is often very strict on information access regarding its more advanced tech.

  3. Similar appearance across variants: All Kh-38 variants look almost identical externally. Without a clear shot of the seeker head, you can’t tell if it’s a laser, satellite, or thermal version.

But yes, it would be interesting to see:

What does it matter if it’s on an F-14??
