Introduction:

This tech tree was made as a follow up suggestion for Yontzee’s Ukraine Ground Forces Tree suggestion, because separately, the Ukrainian Air Force tree may seem like a “copy-paste” tree and not unique enough to be added to the game in a separate form, but in Ukraine there are much more domestic developments in the field of ground forces, which makes it impossible to implement it as a subtree for any nation. But, despite all this, a certain number of Ukrainian developments are present in the tree. Therefore, I present the Ukrainian Air Force Tree.

Tech Tree As It Would Appear In Game:


Brief Description: The Tech Tree consists of three branches. Ukrainian Air Force is relatively young, being founded only in 1992. Therefore it starts at rank 6, and would work in similar manner to Israeli Tree. It would require Rank 6 or higher aircraft from USSR or Ukrainian tree. The starter aircraft would be MiG-21UM, which is lowest sitting aircraft at the tree, sitting at BR 8.7 (air realistic battles).


Ukrainian Air Force History (1992-current):

The Air Force of Ukraine was created on March 17, 1992 in accordance with the directive of the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The Air Force Command was formed at the headquarters of the 24th Air Army in Vinnitsa.

In 1992, on the territory of Ukraine, there were 4 air armies, 10 aviation divisions, 49 aviation regiments, 11 separate squadrons, 7 aviation schools (including 3 flight schools), special institutions and establishments. In total, there are about 669 military units, about 3,000 aircraft (1,500 of which are combat aircraft), more than 122,000 military personnel and 22,000 civilian workers.

Three air armies (1,100 combat aircraft) joined the Air Force of Ukraine:

  • Fighters: 2 divisions (8 regiments) — 80 MiG-23, 220 MiG-29, 40 Su-27;
  • Bombers: 2 divisions (5 regiments) — 150 Su-24;
  • Strategic bombers (long-range aviation): 2 divisions (3 regiments) — 30 Tu-16, 30 Tu-22, 36 Tu-22M;
  • Reconnaissance aviation: 3 regiments — 30 Tu-22, 15 MiG-25, 30 Su-17, 12 Su-24;
  • EW aviation regiment (electronic warfare): 35 Yak-28;
  • 4 aviation centers: 240 MiG-21, 60 Su-24, 550 L-39/L-29

From the mid to the late 90s, many aircraft were withdrawn from service. In 1993, MiG-25’s, then MiG-23’s, and by 1997, Su-15’s were also sent to storage bases.

As most of aircrafts were gradually taken out of service to the storage bases, Ukraine combat aircraft fleet became much smaller than of what it was in early 90s, and the remaining combat capable aircraft were: MiG-29 and Su-27 fighters, Su-24 bombers, Su-25 strike aircrafts and L-39 trainer jets which could be used as light strike aircrafts.

As in the case with any aircraft, with the time, they started to deteriorate and required modernization. Thats why Ukraine has launched various modification programs for existing aircraft, such as MiG-29MU1 in 2009 for MiG-29 aircraft, Su-25-M1 in 2010 for Su-25/Su-25UB, Su-27-1M in 2013 for Su-27P/Su-27S/Su-27UB/Su-27UP and further modernization of the MiG-29 with the MiG-29MU2 in 2019.

As a part of western aid for Ukraine in Russo-Ukrainian war, many western aircrafts are expected to be delivered, such as F-16, that United States has approved for sending from Denmark and the Netherlands.

Brief history of service : In 1992, Ukraine inherited about 370 MiG-21 (UB and bis), some of which were adopted by aviation centers for the purpose of training pilots. It is unknown when these planes made their last flight. But certainly in the early 2000s, none of them were in service.

Year: 2002 Development stage: Domestic modification (Prototype)

Brief history of service : The L-39U is a Ukrainian modernization project of the standard L-39C trainer aircraft from the early 2000s. The modernization included new avionics, a flare chaff, a new more powerful engine, and a 12.7 mm machine gun mount under the cockpit. The aircraft could carry a variety of weapons, including up to four R-60/M or R-73 missiles. It completed its maiden flight in 2002, but, unfortunately, never left the prototype stage.

Brief history of service : The Su-25M1 is a Ukrainian modernization of the old Su-25. In the modernization program, the aircraft mainly undergoes refurbishment and the replacement of avionics with newer ones from Ukrainian manufacturers. Thanks to modifications, it has improved navigation and targeting measures. It entered service in 2010, with about 16 modernized in total. In 2023 Su-25M1 was seen carrying western ammunition for the first time, to be more precise Zuni FFAR unguided rockets.

Brief history of service : Ukraine inherited 49 MiG-27s (M and D variants), they were under repair at the in Lviv and the storage base in Ovruch. The command of the Ukrainian Air Force did not intend to use the MiG-27. Nevertheless, the MiG-27s stationed at the plant, having undergone repairs and acceptance, were preserved with due care: almost all aircraft were sheltered from bad weather in closed workshops and hangars. Some MiG-27s were sold to Sri Lanka in early 2000’s. These aircraft were preserved in storage until 2001.

Brief history of service : Ukranie inherited 172 MiG-23’s (159 MLD’s and 13 UB’s) which were fielded amongst other frontline fighters like MiG-29’s and Su-27’s to protect skies of Ukraine in the early years of independence. The famous photo of the Ukrainian MiG-23MLD, in which it is seen with R-24 and R-60 missiles, was taken during combat readiness after the September 11 terrorist attacks, several aircraft were on combat readiness for 3 days. Two months later, the MiG-23s were finally withdrawn from Ukrainian service.

Brief history of service : MiG-29UM1 (Ukrainian Modernization 1) is the first stage of the MiG-29 modernization program, almost all of the aircraft’s avionics are replaced with the newer systems developed and manufactured in Ukraine.
The principal features of the first MiG-29MU1 upgrade are TA receiver integrated with the SN-3307 satellite navigation system, a more powerful N019-19 radar capable of detecting targets over a longer distance, an Omut electronic defense system that comprises a radar warning/reconnaissance sub-system, an updatable threat database with prioritization, as well as an electronic countermeasures system.
The MiG-29UM1 entered service in 2009, to this date 16 of such aircraft have been modified. Additionally, during the ongoing conflict, in the face of Western assistance, many of these aircraft were modified to carry weapons such as: AGM-88 HARM, GBU-32, GBU-39/B SDB and AASM-250 “Hammer”.

Brief history of service : MiG-29UM2 (Ukrainian Modernization 2) is a phase two of MiG-29 modernization program. Based on the MiG-29MU1, the MiG-29MU2 adds several new systems, including an upgraded 20PM weapons-management system, further upgrade of the radio system, replacement of the navigation system, and the MSD-2000 databus.
One of the main features of the MU2 is its enhanced capability to strike ground targets. Unlike earlier versions of MiG-29 that could only carry unguided air-to-ground weaponary (i.e. rockets, dumb bombs) MU2 can carry guided munition such as Kh-29T and KAB-500KR.
Furthermore, during the ongoing conflict, in the face of Western assistance, many of these aircraft were modified to carry weapons such as: AGM-88 HARM, GBU-32, GBU-39/B SDB and AASM-250 “Hammer”.

Year: 2013 - current Development stage: Domestic modification

Brief history of service : Su-27P1M - is a Su-27P modernized to 1M standard. Within this program a major overhaul and installation of a set of additional equipment is being carried out. Most of avionics are upgraded including N001 radar sighting station with the replacement of the receiving path unit, the master oscillator unit and the digital processing unit, which improves the selection of signals at the radar and increases the detection range of air targets.
The modification of the Su-27P1M itself differs from other modifications of the -1M program in that the base model of the Su-27P can only carry air-to-air weapons, when upgraded to the -1M standard, the aircraft receives the same ability to carry air-to-ground weapons as other Su-27S (or simply Su-27). After completion of the modernization program, the aircraft can carry aerial bombs weighing 100-500 kg, 80-mm unguided S-8 rockets and 122-mm unguided S-13 rockets.
Furthermore, during the ongoing conflict, in the face of Western assistance, many of these aircraft were modified to carry more weaponary such as: AGM-88 HARM, GBU-32, GBU-39/B SDB and AASM-250 “Hammer”.

Brief history of service : MiG-29AS - is a Slovakian modernization of MiG-29A (9-12A) which is an export modification of Soviet fighter. In the 2000s, they were modernized through cooperation between Western companies and the Russian MiG. It was supposed to carry out a major overhaul, extend the service life and change some systems.
The basis for the modernization of the MiG-29AS was the MiG-29SD project, which was developed for Malaysia and provided for the replacement of the sighting radar system with the installation of the updated N019ME Topaz radar. Thanks to this, the aircraft was able to fire missiles at up to two targets simultaneously, and the radar itself better filters interference.
In addition, a new on-board computer, a multi-function display in the cockpit has been installed and communications and navigation have been integrated according to the NATO standard. The engines were also replaced with new ones with increased service life.
These fighters first appeared in Ukraine in 2023.

How on god’s green earth would this make an independent tech tree? There are barely any vehicles. This is at best case scenario a sub tree and at worse they will end up as modifications/skins for the models. Edit: voting yes but only as a subtree for USSR or whomever Gaijin deems is worthy of needing such a subtree.

It’s a start/basis for a nation that will continue to have its AF expanded. It’s not like this has to be added now anyways. This is comparable to other nations that people want in-game. It could fit into the USSR as a nation-selectable feature that’s been discussed in my Ukraine Ground Forces tree.
Edit: I’m not here to get into a discussion about it, I’ll leave that to someone else. It’s my own opinion.

If you consider this enough to be an independent tree then we might as well add everyone. Let’s give Mongolia a tree or let’s give Mexico a tree. Your position I can only guess is motivated by a certain conflict and refusing to add them as a subtree to the USSR even though they don’t have enough to be an independent tree. Edit: also don’t bs people by saying it is a start. It isn’t. This is a start and finish right off the bat unless all you’re going to do is make an ENTIRE tree copy paste to one of the big 3 simply because you are thinking with emotions rather than the logic.

Fully agree with you mate, I wish there were more aircraft. But we have what we have.
My main reasoning for this air tree is to supplement ground which has a lot more to offer.

The tree only uses aircraft that were used by the Ukrainian Air Force (1992 to present), ranks 4 and 5 for ground forces mainly consist of tanks that were not used by Ukraine. So, realistically speaking, ground forces start the same at rank 6 and BR 8.3-9.3.
