Tornado IDS WTD61

Hello.

I’d like to see one of the following weapons added:

  • guided bombs
  • AGM
  • ARM

The reason is that, in Nuclear Escalation Mode, it’s far too difficult to attack ground targets using only unguided bombs.

It is possible to attack aircraft carriers. However, the anti-ship missiles use an algorithm that transitions them into low-altitude horizontal flight, making them easy targets for the ships’ anti-aircraft artillery. The aircraft can only be deployed as part of a formation.
While this premium vehicle was previously considered one of the most useless in the game, the ineffectiveness of its anti-ship missiles renders it essentially a worthless hunk of metal.

They won’t because… simply put, they require photo evidence of the weapon being used… and even that’s not a guarantee, considering that even the IDS WTD61 version used AGM-88 HARMs and was a testing platform for pretty much all guided munitions of the Tornado platform, including Mavericks or guided bombs. Yet here we are in a game where the IDS WTD61 with only regular bombs, while everyone else at that BR has guided munitions, including the guided bomb Yak-130. Dunno if it got its BR changed though in the most recent update.

Stats tend to show more than what the vehicle can do…

Im a half decent player, have a solid 2 kd in the BMD-4M, ~1000 deaths to 2500 kills

Yet, this says more about the vehicle and the tier than the player

For one, this thread:

The WTD 61 is tasked with “conducting ground and flight tests of equipment developed by the defense industry on behalf of the Bundeswehr.” This includes the “qualification and technical evaluation of all newly developed flying systems” and modifications to aircraft already in service.
WTD 61 is the designated agency for integrating and evaluating all new weaponry on the Tornado, directly supporting the claim that it served as a testing platform for guided munitions.

Aviation photography databases contain multiple photos of WTD 61 Tornados (e.g., serial number 98+79) carrying and returning from test flights with AGM-88 HARM missiles. A Russian aviation publication also notes that an ECR Tornado was delivered to the WTD 61 test center in 1990, the same year the AGM-88 HARM was integrated.

A 2002 press release from EADS (now Airbus) states that the free flight test campaign for the Taurus KEPD 350 standoff guided missile was led by WTD 61 with the support of the German Air Force. The missile was released from a Tornado carrier aircraft during the test.

A 2008 defense news report confirms that Diehl’s GPS/INS-guided glide missile HOPE was dropped from a Tornado operated by WTD 61 in Manching to demonstrate its operational performance.

A defense update from 2009 reports that EADS Defence & Security and WTD 61 performed flight tests of the Laser JDAM weapon (a guided bomb) on the Tornado, as part of the ASSTA (Avionics Software System Tornado Ada) improvement program.

While a specific, declassified test report for the Maverick is harder to find, the WTD 61’s official mandate to test “all subsystems including armament” on the Tornado, combined with its documented history of testing a wide array of guided weapons (HARM, Taurus, HOPE, Laser JDAM), establishes a clear pattern of evaluating precision-guided munitions for the platform. The Maverick was a standard NATO weapon, and its evaluation by the primary test center is historically consistent.

I n-game representation of the WTD 61 Tornado as a platform limited to unguided bombs contradicts its documented historical role. The evidence shows that WTD 61 was not just an operational unit but the primary agency responsible for the qualification and integration of advanced guided weaponry on the Tornado fleet. Therefore, providing it with guided munitions in-game is historically accurate, as its real-world counterpart was specifically tasked with testing them.

If you don’t believe me, search for specific German parliamentary reports (Bundestagsdrucksachen) or defense committee documents related to the “ASSTA” (Avionics Software System Tornado Ada) upgrade programs, as these often detail the specific weapons and systems certified for the Tornado fleet.

I don’t know why people still struggle with this: It’s common knowledge that WTD 61 used their Tornado for weapons testing over many years, and that this encompassed also the more modern weaponry like HARMs and guided bombs.

However - and that should also be clear by now - in WT this specific premium variant always was intended to represent a test Tornado in an early iteration, at the same technological level basically like the MFG variant, so with only the same weaponry as the MFG.

The ASSTA 1 variant in the tech tree then represent an already later iteration, with more advanced weaponry.

Maybe in this case the name was chosen suboptimally, implying this test variant would be equipped with all the bells and whistles ever tested, but basically it’s just a paint variant that gives it its name, as far as I see…

So you also dont have sources, got it…

Welcome to WT Community :3

Ye maybe, maybe the Devs should had added a Early in its Name

But when People claim it tested the AGM-65, I like to ask for there sources, because in 100% of the Cases, they dont have Sources.

Well, but then the community would ask why it’s called Early and demand a Late be added too, as the Early implies there’s different variants…

Ah well…

Found the Comment for the WTD61 stating its a Early one from the 70s
(Report was about Addding Guided Bombs to it)

You can twist and turn it in every way, it wont improve the Situation :3

Maybe with the Cluster Bombs coming soon as stated in the CM Update the WTD61 gets a New Toy :3

Just add the “Early” to it then and add another variant or something?

Also, should it share the same BR as a Yak-130? KAB-500kr to the face feels very nice when all your aviation has is maybe mavericks on a Hunter F.58 and only two planes of the entire 9.3-9.7 GRB BR having CCRP, in comparison.

Knowing how Gaijin handles bomb damage it’s gonna be a “Hit” simulator and not gonna improve anything at all.

mfw I give you a wall of text
“no sources”
yeah ok bro keep defending the billion dollar company

There is literally zero reason not to add more weapons to the Tonka. Just give it an appropriate BR, and boom problem solved, I have no idea why not also add multiple variants of it too considering how thin the German air TT is (zero vehicles between 13.0 and 14.0, seriously, and they’re also decompressing it, while not adding any new ones?)

You mean this?

Zusammenfassung

Because thats the only thing even just mention the AGM-65, and Issue with that is that it comes from a VERY EARLY Stage with stuff which was Planned at some stage but never happend…

Do you even know what Sources are?
As example Pictures of the Weapons System on the Plane
ARMIGER on a Tornado IDS as example, or when it would be written in the Flight Manual (Must be Unclassiefied, otherwise you will Disappear)
eabc5aed286ef1340432260d00987f6923b312eb

Literally also gave you the site that houses a bunch of pictures of planes and all, but you do you.

Dude, I asked you for sources for the AGM-65, not about the LJDAM/HARM/Taurus/HOPE/etc…

If you dont Understand what a AGM-65 is or better a Source for it, its not my problem
