I’m completely F2P, I’m fine with the long grind because I play the game for fun, but there is stuff that pisses me off which isn’t related to the predatory monetization of this game (with the exception of P2W content, not necessarily P2P). Some are:
Horrible map design
P2W elements (crew skills, bushes, undertiered event exclusive vehicles like KV-1E) and I don’t buy the excuse of “BuT yOu CaN eArN tHeM!!”, yeah I’m not going to spend years grinding for something just so the playing field is equal.
Bad balancing and BR compression
Broken game mechanics (ghost shells, volumetric, map objects eating shells)
Being forced to grind WW2 to get to modern vehicles
Bad graphics (seriously, if not for DLAA and upscaling methods like SSAA this game looks like dogshit. you are literally at a disadvantage if you play on anything less than 1440p)
In War Thunders current state I would say I have fun however its only with certain lineups.
My Favorite Lineups:
7.7 Britain - This has to be my favorite all time lineup. Uptiers are rough but still can put in some work.
9.3 Germany - Got my first ever nuke with this and just has a bit of everything.
11.7 or 12.0 Britain - Yes, I enjoy the Challengers. Don’t ask why.
8.3 Britain - Falcon and ZA-35 with some decent enough backup vehicles. Need I say more?
The game does still have its issues but it the same with every game. War Thunder is just kind of a game I can get on and do stupid stuff and unlike other games I don’t get flamed for having fun and not doing well if my stupid push does not work.
I do have one big issue with the game right now and thats the grind. I understand why we have a progression system, its so players don’t get bored but there needs to be balance of progression and freedom. At this point in time I have the top ground vehicle in 2 trees and minimum 6.3 in 4 others. I just feel like after putting hundreds and hundreds of hours in I should have more free reign to do what I want. There have been times I have wanted to play a vehicle with a buddy but unfortunately because I have not put enough time into that certain tree I am screwed. This is also coming from someone with the disposable income and is willing to spend money on the game.
I genuinely feel bad for people who have grinded more than me and those who have finished Tech Tree’s whilst free to play.
A part from all that there some some smaller issues like some balancing issues, map issues and server issues. Like its annoying always being on 120 ping because of SA servers so I am always at a disadvantage but its something I put up with. Its also annoying being sniped leaving spawn from across the map or facing things much much better than what I am in but yet again, I put up with it.
Overall even though there are a fair few negatives I pointed out, I still feel like I have enough fun to outweigh those issues and it is just something I have learnt to look past. In the end of the day every game has issues and you just have to suck it up some times. At least we still have an active development team that puts a ton of time trying to make the game better.
When you stop thinking of it as a game and start thinking of it as an actual combat scenario, the frustration turns into immersion
“Oh shit, all of the new recruits that went to capture the city got ambushed”
“Crap, the rookie anti-air gunners can’t hit for shit, gotta tread carefully to avoid being bombed”
“Oh God, the left flank got pushed back, and I’m all alone with this Tiger 1, we better do our best to hold them back so our left flank can regather and push”
BR doesn’t matter. Match quality is entirely dependent on whether the team can understand how to play or not. Sometimes you have a close battle with everyone working to win, other times you have a wall of cattle that facechecks certain death and leaves after donating enough SP to spawn half the United States Air Force on the few teammates’ they’ve left for dead.
Where I have fun is in the test drive. I hope Gaijin makes it possible to use all the vehicles in the test drive without having to own them, so I wouldn’t need to play a single game.
Well in ARB if a bad player dies, at least they ate up a missile and some of the opponent’s energy advantage or flares or something. If a bad player dies in GRB, they GIVE the opponent spawn points to continue the fight with more vehicles. Bad players in GRB magnify the enemy advantage the more they throw the match.
fun, for 90% of players looks like to ruin teammates’ game, bully them, to read the mission objectives not ,and grinding at team’s expensens telling to you “cry harder” or " i report you".is it fun?
have you guys tried using the buccaneer S.2B in GRB with the martels? funniest thing i’ve ever done and its really fun if u miss and just to see things die anyway
In most cases, absolutely not. The game has potential to be fun but for whatever reason, all of the good ideas seem to get completely ignored. The player base has been asking for new gamemodes and mechanics for years and even give detailed descriptions on how they could be implemented and balanced, but they keep getting ignored in favor of drip-fed slop. I even saw a player go through the trouble of coding a mechanic himself. There are many things in the game that are anti-player. For example, losing boosters even if you are teamkilled or getting constantly killed by CAS or spawn campers only a few meters from your spawn. Thousands of players have been begging for a ground only mode for years. A ton of players have been asking for heli PvE to be updated. Tons of players have been asking for air realistic and air sim to be reworked. The devs seem to think that the only way to make money is to force players into going through insufferable and monotonous gameplay. It seems like it’s designed to frustrate you into buying premiums and in-game currency. You also have players at fault. In every good suggestion, you’ll have players who valiantly oppose it. You will often see good ideas opposed with, “If you want thing, play different game that also has thing” as if adding to this game wouldn’t improve it. The only reason most of us even play war thunder is because it has zero competition.
Here are a few examples of gameplay ideas that should have been implemented long ago. These suggestions usually have an overwhelmingly positive reception.
