Then thats wrong interpretation; one for which gaijin isnt responsible.
You, or chinese community, can interpret it all they want - they are not the ones who decide the meaning of “subtree” within scope of warthunder.
If I say “I like oranges” you dont get to interpret it as me saying “I hate bananas” and accuse me of being a banana hater; neither do chinese players get to interpret a “subtree” as “inferior nation”.
Im czech, our language definetively doesnt have word “subtree”. Do you see me running around interpreting “subtree” as, i dont know, “occupied nation”?
they use the term all the time, wtf are you on about?
I only have this screenshot around but the word “subtree” was mentioned in relation to India, and as well as denying czechoslovakia as russian subtree, quite recently. Would need to dig for those tho.
If we set aside contradictions and conflicts, seems we can add MIG-25(Victor Belenko) for Japan
Nah, after checking devblogs they do use it but usually once or at the end. That’s completely my bad ^^
Doesn’t mean it isn’t interpreted as such. Is it the wrong interpretation? Yes. But even when you tell people that’s not how it works, the fact that, that interpretation is easy to land on is bad in of itself. I’d rather we have the Subtree Folder idea instead, so it has its own distinct mini-tree and they share a lineup. Then we wouldn’t have to have the community blowing up everytime a controversial subtree is added.
That one is a little meh. I think its important to include it, but captured vehicles have always been a bit of a questionable one. Nevermind the fact that this one was never used by the Japanese and immediately sent to the US.
Then its responsiblity of those people to properly learn the meaning of word before reaching conclusion, is it not?
I have the exact same responsiblity if I communicate in english, as it is not my first language. I cant just simply look at one word that has no 1 to 1 equivalent in czech, assume its meaning and interpret it incorrectly.
I’m saying the fact it can be easily mistranslated and misinterpreted is an issue. Even I thought the same originally.
absolutely, but then responsibility of translating the term “subtree” is on the people doing the translation and responsiblity for understanding the term “subtree” correctly is on people who are being translated to.
but we can make it easier
translation issues and nations folders are two different issues.
There is no word for subtree, the issue comes when machine translating the english word of subtree to Chinese, the “sub” part is translated to “子” (lit. child). This has a similar literal meaning, but also adds an implication of the main tree having a level of power over the "child"tree that isn’t there in english.
One thing that was a very important part of writing this suggestion was that it should directly present nations as equal.
In such a system Japan is not the main nation that Thailand is placed in, but just one nation on the folder, the same as Thailand.
Thailand this way could still be called a subtree, with “sub” as in “a partition of the folder”, but by this interpretation Japan is the same. There is no implication of power.
So while it’s not main focus of the rework, it is still an issue that was considered when making it.
Then those who know the meaning can explain it to others, problem solved.
Gaijin fails to understand the difference between “Commonwealth Realms” and “Commonwealth Republics” India is a Commonwealth Republic, not a Realm… ie, the English monarch IS NOT THE INDIAN HEAD OF STATE. you think they will be able to pick up on the subtle undertones?
They are trying… but it’s lost in translation, us westerners are not good with subtly or understanding other peoples points of view… it’s all ME ME ME RIGHT NOW RIGHT NOW!!!
Okay but doesnt that sound ridiculous? All this drama over what is a clearly translation error?
Again, english is not my first language, but in million years, I wouldnt interpret “subtree” within scope of warthunder as “one nation having power over its subtree”. There are many examples where such interpretation simply does not correspond to reality, unless some people want to say that sweden controls entiriety of nordics.
again, this is probably translation issue. No one denies that Thailand is sovereign country by making it a subtree. No one implies Thailand should be treated any lesser because it is subtree.
However thailand doesnt have enough vehicles to form entiriety of main tech tree on its own, so it was added as subtree. And, Japan was chosen because there simply isnt that much controversy like there would be with south korea for example.
“sub” is a prefix for “lesser then” or “under the control of”. Yes Gaijin just means a smaller tech tree with in a bigger one… but even in English it implies inferiority to some degree.
I’m not a “westerner”. Well, maybe compared to Far Eastern countries perhaps. But you get the point.
English is not my main language either. If something is lost in the translation I would either ask others or use my logic for interpretation of a certain word. That is NOT an excuse. We all know the main reason. Those people just made their mind up already and they just use whatever reason they can get behind to push their agenda. I find it dishonest. This game is not limited to Chinese playerbase.
If Im the single person NOT seeing this being implied at all in this entire thread, maybe the issue was with my english texbook lmao.
I simply cant fathom how one can see “techtree - subtree” as anything other but “folder - subfolder” or “class - subclass” type of thing. Its just how vehicles are organized.
im thrilled about your explanation of the word submarine then lmao.
