Hi all,
Just in case, for those who may don’t know : AoA is for Angle of Attack.
So yes, at the moment, we all use the “tap tap tap” tip on the elevator push key, to reduce the turn radius, and avoid to take too much G, or taking too much AoA and so loosing too much speed in a turn.
The problem is that it doesn’t work well with some aircrafts, due to the very high elevator authority, or/and because they have a very bad energy retention in turns. A good example is the Mig21.
And it’s also often weird/unconfortable to do.
The goal of this command, just like the control mode command, would be to be able to choose between 2 options :
High AoA (just like what we have now), and low or medium AoA. Basically half of the value you have at high AoA.
What are the cons? None, except you have one more key to bind and to manage in combat.
What are the pros :
Being able to have a better energy management in combat.
Which is a HUGE gameplay improvement.
What it would look like :
You’re in your Mig21 at the beginning of the match, and you want to keep your energy while maneuvering around to get a kill opportunity. With this key, you select “medium AoA mode”, and you can fly the aircraft smoothly with the mouse and keys without worrying about loosing too much energy in your turns. Instead of struggling by taping your push elevator key like a freaking machine gun.
Then you get someone jumping in your six, so you switch to “high AoA mode”, you force the overshoot, and start a 1v1.
Then 1v1 is getting long, and you’re in a very low energy state. You switch back to medium AoA mode to help you to regain some energy (because the plane will loose less energy in the turn), than may help you to win that 1v1.
Etc …
- I would like a key to choose between high and low/medium AoA to have a better energy management
- Useless for me / happy with the current state

For those who will vote no/useless, please explain why (I am extremely curious to understand how you can disagree with that).

it seems like it would simplify the gameplay too much

I am not sure. I would rather say the player have more option to manage his energy, his flight. It gives more options.

Rn you have to cycle through all control modes to reach full real and be able to pull extra AoA which is too many unnecessary steps. It’d be much better to have a button to either toggle or deactivate the FBW system while pressed.

is this already implemented in the game? I mean the AoA limitation, apparently I haven’t used this mechanic before
reduces skill used to manage energy. nuh uh. and my favorite aircraft are deltas which burn speed.

Yep both the instructor and the aircraft’s systems limit the AoA a plane can pull. Using full real controls deactivates the limiter, but you can also stall and flatspin

Someone understand what this guy is trying to say?

It exists of sorts in sim controls.
It’s called “SAS: Damping.”
If I turn it ON and start turning like an idiot in my F3H-2 with back-stick, I don’t wing stall until I bled so much speed there’s nothing it can do
If I turn it OFF and start turning like an idiot in my F3H-2 with back-stick, I fall out of the sky in a spin.
Looking at WTRTI AOA and Critical AoA%,
SAS:Damping makes me hit 100% Crit AoA and only if I STILL keep pulling maximum deflection does it let me go over it, and only a few percentages. It also achieves 100% crit AoA way slower, on a smooth curve.
With it, I cap out at 113%. Still became a lawndart due to lack of speed
"Without it, I've managed to yank my F8E into a 160% critical AoA with full elevator and become a lawndart much faster
From what I’ve read, SAS:Damping limits you at 95% critical AoA unless you bleed a lot of speed to overpower it.
Note. It’s not perfect nor smart. It just makes it harder to kill yourself.

Someone wants a cobra button for their Su-27?
Other than that; It’d be a great buff to all the Swedish delta fighters to have their AoA limited.

ignorance only makes you look special.

On the planes that has it, yes.
Would also be fun seeing half the deaths in a match being wings ripped off
use your skills to fly your aircraft. dont pull too much aoa if you dont want to bleed your energy.
what next? dogfighting autopilot?

found the person who doesn’t want to learn energy management and wants the game to cater to their lack of skill

You mean someone who wants a realistic system added to all 70’s and later fighter jets?

bring in the g limiters next and stop aircraft being allowed from pulling extra G’s
