what are the differences
Because they exist. If they didn’t, in a useful, tactical capacity, the path of least resistance would be to actually learn playing the game.
It really isn’t that difficult. There are much, much more difficult games out there and people play them. War Thunder requires a lot of knowledge, but not that much practice.
Your entire argument is that people are literally too stupid for proper Fox 3 combat. I’m sure those people appreciate your concern…
I don’t know the specific differences since I am not a dataminer but even washed-up old guy can notch single AMRAAM at 40km with high degree of success in Eurobomber using the exact same vertical notch maneuver.
without numbers then i have no clue what the differences is and cant make an educated decision on your question.
You’ve just shown with this clip is that currently in War Thunder, a player can be in high energy state for offensive actions, while maintaining defensive capabilities.
And then you wonder why it’s possible for good players to steamroll a team so easily, when you can see the exact reason for the snowball effect.
If notching was made basically impossible against a clear sky, and harder, but doable at lower altitude/energy state. Then players would want to launch their missiles at high altitude/energy state, and would have to either spend their energy and resources on defending while maintaining offensive posture, or retreat (go cold) and give up ground and initiative.
They quite literally are not capable of learning. This is due to the fact todays players are not the same as yesterdays players. There are a lot of former US-mains that were not able to adapt to having worse aircraft than their peers. A lot of these people are the same ones that in 2024 were saying that Su-27SM with bugged radar and first iteration R-77 was actually fine and red players just needed to learn to play.
The other flight sim games focus much more on the simulation aspect and multiplayer is a complete afterthought. WarThunder, especially top tier, requires a lot more practice than other Sims.
Most people haven’t mastered vertical notching and prefer to play on maps like Denmark which I think kind of proves my point.
So should I have died in this clip or not? Would the new and improved notching system cause that missile to hit? Because it was the 40km AMRAAM shot and one that I defended in the same way as I normally do. So how should things be different?
If that’s your opinion, then you might as well stop playing the game, because you will always kill people with little to no effort and the game will always be boring for you, because they won’t learn.
I’m talking about completely different game like CS, LoL, R6 or even Fortnite. All of them are much more difficult than War Thunder and they are very popular.
It proves that people in fact do follow the path of least resistance.
You were above him, so after launching you would probably try to defeat the missile kinematically, to maintain data link and offensive posture, because notching wouldn’t really be an option for you, while going cold is giving away position for no reason.
The guy you fired at was lower, so he would probably focus on notching, because it would actually be doable in his position, and because to defeat your missile kinematically he would probably need to go at least a little bit cold/go past 90 degrees, and give away more position than he has to.
If you managed to defeat the missile kinematically without going cold, you would be rewarded with DL connection, which would make notching harder for the enemy.
The guy lower is on the defensive, and with each missile has a chance to fail notching (human error) and die.
You would also have to watch out as you push him and get closer, because if the enemy manages to counterfire HOBS, then again notching against clear sky isn’t really an option and you’re well within the NEZ. You would have to quickly dive to notch, and if you manage to not die, you would worsen your position.
Both players would basically be fighting for a better position for a merge, but in this scenario, both an AIM-120 and MICA would be useful to get said position.
This is why I have Il-2 and other games. Shockingly if I take a break from WarThunder and don’t play it daily there are things I will have to re-learn.
This is a horrible comparison. All of those games have some form of skill based matchmaking so if you play like a potato you will be matched against other potatoes. WarThunder Sim is basically the opposite of that with how the game works and how small the sim community is; people deliberately pick games to have the opposite of SBMM.
So the course of action that I took in this instance would not work under your new system and I should have went cold and outran the missile?
nice garry’s mod reference. i appreciate you.
- They also have non-ranked game modes.
- The point is people are capable of learning to play the game.
- There are plenty of games where their main game mode isn’t ranked, which are more difficult than War Thunder.
No, it wouldn’t.

Why?
Please explain how you would defeat the missile kinematically without going cold?
Your assumption is that from my position that I shouldn’t be able to notch and also that notching low-from-high should be harder. So how hard should notching low-from-high be? Should it be as hard or harder than chaffless notching is now?
just make the seeker performance of fox 3’s more accurate to life, slightly nerf MP, heavy nerf MCM, and only add the more advanced 2 way datalink stuff for missiles that have it like the AIM-120D
they can also add more advanced countermeasure types. large and small caliber is just scratching the surface
Notching against a clear sky with chaff would require surgical precision. Even if executed successfully, maintaining this angle while the missile approaches and your plane moves, would be near impossible. Perhaps IOG guidance could be improved as well. RWRs could also be made less accurate, but it would impact notching down low as well.
Not to mention without chaff it would be impossible.
Cranking, beaming, F-pole, diving into denser air.
The closer you get, the more aggressively you have to defend.
Perhaps you start by cranking, transition to beaming and end up going slightly cold, like 120 degrees to the missile, because you slightly misjudged its energy, and turn back in once it has lost the last bits of energy.
Like here:

In general not flying in a straight line towards the enemy.
I don’t know, hence the small steps.
Another case for Detective @Panter2005
Notice how I am able to notch/defeat the missiles launched at 20-25km without the use of chaff. So where do we want to set the minimal difficulty for notching with chaff?
The guy that killed me appears to just be running radar off and launching at under 10km so unfortunately I didn’t maintain notch angle correctly. Skill issue or something.
i support making a guns and or a guns/fox 2 only game mode
useless once better missiles are added
Better missiles only mean you fire your first missile from further away, and actually merging is harder.
The dynamics don’t change.
a well timed dual pulse missile shot or Meteor shot will be nearly impossible to defeat kinematically.
BVR should be stronger but defending shouldnt be made that hard
MBDA Meteor has a really large nez allowing it to hound the player for much longer compared to other missiles forcing them to go cold for longer, the year of the Eurofighter is now if seekerheads get buffed much closer to how they’ll realistically perform even with ecm it’ll be quite long and tedious to try defeat it kinematically
