On most maps (except the winter ones) 9.5km is right at the edge of contrail height.
In my experience, the F-16 and F-15 lose very little speed with that extra altitude, and that extra altitude gives your missiles more performance. If you end up in a dogfight, you can just drag it to lower altitude.
The issue is having to turn to avoid closer range launches

Eh, in my experience, that really isn’t an issue. 99% of players will not have a clue you are there, and for the ones that do, you should not be flying at them head on anyways. Launch your missile and then hold them at the edge of your radar scan angle so that you can hold datalink on them as long as possible if they launch a missile. That way you don’t need much time to enter the notch.
If you find yourself getting a fox-3 launch on you within ~5km, you have already made plenty mistakes.

The F-18 is the slowest plane at its BR (except the F-18A), so you already need to play more carefully with it. The SU-30 can also sit comfortably at mach 1.5+ at that altitude. And I was replying to someone else as well, speaking from my experience in the planes I play most.

Because sitting at high alt gives your missiles more range (I have hit 40KM shots with sparrows before) but in the F-18 you don’t want to sit nearly as high as other planes because it is anemic at altitude.

You can do BVR in the F-18s. It just requires a few more braincells than the SU30 premiums.
