Radar gimbal is one of the most important aspects of a top tier radar.
Have you ever used a plane with good gimbal limits?
You get so much better awareness, can launch and datalink within a notch.
With stuff like MiG-29M, SMT, Su-30SM2 you can even guide R-27ER within the notch
The ODOT&E, the GAO, the DoDIG reports and even some customers complaining about the recurrent bugs of the radar. The block 3F under the 30R07 software release has the most stable radar system so far for an F-35 but the APG-81 is comparable in architecture to other things we have in Europe. Not to mention the use dipole antennas which tends to have a very poor gain on high angular repointing.
