Have War Thunder Lost its roots? Did modern vehicles ruin this game?

More than just the damage models, the auto gunners were insane.

WT was bad back then.

When you have developers who can’t make up their minds on whenever they should listen to constructive criticism. Or treat it as an after thought the results show. Though imma keep playing since there is no true competitor. Yet.

IMO bring back old version would be good because new players can see how old game was good/bad.

Somehow they ruined the game experience because they added modern vehicles but didn’t increase enough their respective BR. Now we have the compression and they are not going to fix it.

In my experience, you are way likelier to get a nuke if your team is losing than if your team is winning.

If your team is winning, it’s likely that kills will be spread far more evenly across your team members, and that capture points will only be capped once or twice.

The best path to a nuke is to cap multiple times and have a higher individual kill count. This can definitely happen if your team is winning, but is more likely if your team is losing.

To me, anything that rewards exceptional individual performance in WT is a good thing.

Fully agree - but regarding the immersion factor this whole nuke concept is a joke for itself. Dropping a tactical nuke on a battlefield is nonsense as long as friendlies (and the dropping aircraft) are within the blast radius of the explosion.

There are a hell of unclassified documents from the 80ties available which showed when and how they were supposed to get used in combat.

So using tactical nukes was always part of BAI (Battlefield Air Interdiction) or AI, but never like in wt at the battlefield itself.

So imho the drop zone should be located way behind the frontline (= wt cap zones) and need a way more realistic drop sequence in order to give the dropping aircraft a realistic chance to escape the blast…

It’s an arcade mechanic. I mean, just the idea of your German WW2 lineup having a B-29 on perma-call that can only be called upon if the guy with most kills does it (how do the higher ups know in real time???) is pretty funny.

I’m all for keeping the function and replacing the form with something a little less outlandish, but WT is such a plain old shooter in my eyes at this point that I barely notice the idiosyncrasies.

I disagre, they make the game unqie and outsanding.

You get nowhere else the fidelity and mass of veeicels then in WT.

There is no coempetion as the time ane effort to just provide what WT has is to much for other companys.
Not mention the time invested. No player will jump off just to regrind the same stuff again with smaller playerbassis and unceratin future.
Not with notion that there wont be anything else.

Btw you dont have to play the modern stuff.
You can always stick to your preferd vehicel, timeline, BR setting.

Could you not separate the B.R from ww2 to cold war and have a gap in the B.R so there would be no overlap between cold war and ww2 Vehicles, I’ve always had a concept in my head that the game would fix the B.R and sometimes unbalanced aspect of the game.

Example

You could break the game down and start with Early ww2 (from 1939 to 1942)

This period would include vehicles from the early stages of World War II, such as the iconic tanks and planes used during the Battle of Britain, the North African Campaign, and the Eastern Front

Mid WW2 would be 1942 to 1943

Here, we’d see the transition to more advanced vehicles, like the Tiger tanks, the P-51 Mustang, and the Soviet T-34.

Late WW2 would be considered to 1943 - 1945

The final years of World War II would feature powerful tanks like the Panther and the IS-2, as well as late-war aircraft like the Spitfire Mk XIV and the P-47 Thunderbolt.

After World War II, the Korean War (from 1950 to 1953) introduced new vehicles. Separating early and late Korean War vehicles in the B.R

Again a gap in BR after the Korean War to go into the Vietnam War ERA, rinse repeat until you get to the more modern day conflicts, doing it this way you can then have better control of vehicle placement, and have tanks / planes that actually fought each other in RL, with or without advantages, it would take a lot of work i admit, especially when you work in ships and helicopters into those ERA’s.

But i believe it would make the game better and also enable the developers create really great dynamic maps and scenarios for each Theater, maybe have a WW2 Development team and a Korean Team etc in the background solely focusing on these conflicts, make events anniversaries etc, the the game would be like 5 games in 1, and the player can choose if he or she wants to experience it all or focus on one aspect like ww2.

You could have specific updates catering Different Theatres as well

I dont think modern vehicles ruined the game but the lame way they were thrown in did.No era separation and no era specific maps.

Well, in that case and most cases ill be trying to scratch the King tiger in my Strv m/40L or Strv m/42 EH XD

Most Swedish tanks are quite funny in BR placement, lol
But no matter id still enjoy throwing constant smoke into the face of enemies from my Strv 42.

But Cold war Swedish tanks would be quite powerful for their tier… Same with the Jets.

You would have a pretty rough grind until the cold war stuff, the J32s And J29s would be worth it though

Well as i said i started on my ps4 switched to pc, and so created a new account.

Sorry for the Über late responce lol

imo the game’s not lost its roots but they’re just ignoring them, practically only focusing on modern stuff that in many ocassions is implemented horribly

(though I can really feel it in the soundtrack, it went from pieces that brought tear to my eyes to modern techno stuff)

I don’t know what War Thunders roots were but we have WW2 and Cold war so badly mixed its a historical nightmare. Just a mess of Old heavy armour and much modern artillery. Just one big area of realism abandoned. Its’ all become a bit of a kids game.Maybe it always was.

I’d argue that this was the golden age of the game.

1 Hour ARB matches where a majority of the lobby was there to play/fight and not just to ‘grind’ their way to a jet they have no idea how to play.

Engaging and pro-longed dog fights that wouldn’t end prematurely due to an atrociously designed ticket mechanic created to get as many people back into the matchmaker as quickly as possible.

Not to mention an occasional weekend Enduring EC!

We’ve regressed so far that it’s hard even remember what the game was back then.

It sounds good.
Where did it start to go wrong?

2019 or 2020 imo

They started to add modern jets since late 2018 to 2019 but, they couldn’t balance it.

Funny how so many aircrafts ruined matchmakers such as T-2, Hunter F.6, F-4C, MiG-21SMT, etc.

Now myself personally I haven’t been around very long, starting in 2018, but I certainly see a massive decline in the game since then. I (And many friend who played before me) agree that 2018 was the peak of the game, if not slightly earlier. I feel like modern planes and tanks are cool and stuff - but only to some people. I am okay with playing modern planes sometimes but I cannot for the life of me withstand ground, hence only grinding to 8.0 in Germany and 7.7 in Britain, yet having rank VIII in air for Britain and Japan. Despite playing on an old Toshiba in 2018 with maybe 15 - 20 FPS max, I was enjoying it so much more than I am now even though I could BARELY get a single kill.

I absolutely adored having proper dogfights with people and pretending I was actually in the sky fighting good opponents, now no offense to the newer players but now whenever I go into ARB anywhere outside of 5.7 - 9.0 I find that everybody is just intent on grinding and not actually fighting, and everything seems so point and click to me. Tanks is very much the same, except I suck excessively with tanks. All of the experienced players tend to stick around BRs which aren’t plagued with pay to win noobs who respectfully don’t know anything - which isn’t their fault - because gaijin decided they would get more money letting people pay for top tier than learning the game and spending money because they enjoy it.

I agree with this (preferably I’d like a ratio of WW2:Modern being more 60:40 or 70:30 but I know that’s never ever ever going to happen :)

Yaint?!

I dont like the focus of the devs. There is basically just content for high-top tier, even tho there is enough to be done in lower tiers. I dont like that the minor TTs get absolutely ignored even tho the implimentation of new vehicles is pretty basic.

We just have to accept that WT is now in its Cash Cow phase and probably gonna disapear in the next 4-5 years.

The only thing I think ruined the game around 6RB is the flood of artillery that one shot kills everything. 2s1 and M109. The bakan is stupid with WW2 tanks at that BR. Real shame they did that.
