R-73 is definitely the best. You can fire it 90 off bore and easily get a kill. It’s ridiculous and stupid. The 9M was nerfed like crazy in the last few months.

There is already a really cool video I borrowed from the forum. Guy stalls his SU-27 and fires straight up… Thrust vectoring kicks in and he gets a clean kill 90 degrees off-boresight.

Now go do it in an actual game. Also that video is one of the rare occations the missile doesn’t spin out of control. I say this because you implied the HOBS ability is some insane advantage above
The missiles do pretty freaking well. I see them do things that the other missiles in this BR are not doing, quite frequently.
Also in merges these missiles perform well above average. Their thrust vectoring allows them to do some pretty insane drops that the 9M simply cannot compete with.

Yeah no other missile in that br spins out of control and wobles like crazy.
You have to be suicidal to merge in a su27/mig29 (only fighters with r73), only time when they can be used is if you’re flatspining after being shot to death but still have sling one out
Nah… If I’m alone against another plane I salivate for a merge. Full controls + r-73 shenanigans time.
If not alone best to fly away or you get 3rd partied easily because dogfighting with a flanker means stalling maneuvers

I don’t know what you are doing, but it’s not the right answer. These missiles are very capable.
You never used them 100%
I like dogfighting as well but human performance aside you will never win against an f16 or a gripen with the current FM

I mean sure, but the average player in RB doesn’t want to spend half or more of his flares dogfighting a flanker that has a bunch of r-73 to spam at close range, chances are one of them will be launched with a good enough lock if there’s not enough flares being dumped at the time and won’t be flareable after launch

Min range isnt that small on the r73. So in a knife fight you wont be able to score a hit with the missile due to being close, unless they extent then they are dead
If someone wants to knife fight with a flanker, it does not even need r-73’s. Flanker bleeds speed faster and retains decent control at low speed if full controls are used

As soviet airframes get more maneuverable missiles than the average loadout, it’s not that you should also win dogfights as a headless chicken.
Mind the balance.
By balance you mean they should have fake flight performance? R-73 are half broken in game. Everyone uses the gripen for sqrb for a reason. High G limit isnt the only deciding factor that makes a missile good

I’d rather have a 20G proper IRCCM missile than garbage R-73 that spins around and gets flared by Gripen at 1KM
