CV 90 family general discussion

CV 90

Disclaimer: This only thread provides a short overview and is still work in progress

Very short history:
The CV 90 family of (primarily) infantry fighting vehicles has its roots in the 1980s, when the Swedish army decided on an increase in the level of mechanization of its forces to still remain effective after cutting down its size. The current in-service Pbv 302 could not satisfy the new requirements, so a new project for a vehicle capable of high strategic and tactical mobility, attacking both ground vehicles and aircraft, with a high degree of armor protection, low maintenance costs, and growth potential was initiated.
Since no vehicle on the international market could satisfy the Swedish requirements sufficiently at that time, it was decided to develop the new vehicle family “in-house”.
Between 1984 and 1990, seven prototypes with varying armament and systems were built and trialed harshly. Finally, in 1991, the first series production of the CV 90 began. Since then, it has been continuously upgraded, and many different versions for many different nations (for example: Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Netherlands, Switzerland, and Finland) have been built.

Information about the swedish 40mm gun system

Variants in game:

The earliest:

Armed with a 40mm 40/70Bc and part of the fourth production batch, ordered in 1994.
It features improvements to the FCS, running gear, as well as crew comfort (like an air conditioning system).

The beefiest:

In 2000, the swedish army requested to give the CV 90 a higher degree of armor and mine protection, after multiple tests it was decided to equip it with an add on armor package made by the german company IBD Deisenroth Engineering. This package includes passive armor for both hull and turret, mineprotection for the belly and a spall liner. For this package to be fitted the coaxial MG and smoke grenades were moved to the turret roof. A new thermal imaging system the LIRC manufactured by FLIR Systems Incorperated. Laser protection filters were added to all optics and the carrying complement was reduced to six soldiers.

CV9040/56
image

In 1999 a CV9040A which was previously fitted with the Lemur system was used for a demonstrator which featured a launcher for 2 RBS-56 BILL ATGMs. This test was quite succesful but the launcher was never adopted for mass production.

Lvkv 9040C
image

A Lvkv 9040 upgraded to the C standard and fitted with a PS-95 radar on the turret roof wich operates in the 3.3-3.4 GHZ waveband has a operational range of 15km and track 6 targets simultaneously. It also features LuLIS for IFF and airspace monitoring.
It should have a crew of 7 (in game its 5)

CV90120
image

Unveiled in 1998 and fitted with a RUAG 120mm L50 gun. Since then it has been modified and modernized multiple times.

CV90105
image

A CV90 fitted with the Cockerill XC-8 105HP turret. It features an Autoloader, new sights and a laser warning system.

CV9030FIN
image

Like the Swiss Schützenpanzer 2000 the Finnish is a variation of the CV90 Mk.II. It is armed with a 30mm Bushmaster II/Mk44 with a 7.62 PKT MG as a coax. The hull and turret is fitted with MEXAS passive add on armor made by IBD Deisenroth Engineering and it features a six barrel smoke grenade launcher system developed by KMW.
Our variant is a command CV9030K1.

CV9035DK/NL
image
image

Both vehicles are CV90 Mk.III variants armed with the 35mm Bushmaster III. But they feature different protection kits with the NL having RoofPRO and SidePRO while the DK has Mexas 2 (which should give the DK frontal protection according to STANG Lvl.5). The dutch version also features an LWS.

CV90 Mk.IV
image

Latest Version featuring SidePRO protection. (but for some reason no spall liner)
It is armed with a 30mm Bushmaster and Spike LR II ATGMs. It currently is incomplete, more on that:

Variants not in game but suggested:

Want a segment on the Bofors 40/70 guns on the 9040 series?

I wouldn’t say no to that

Just noticed ‘49’/70B

Amazing work, a general CV90 thread was long overdue. I made a flow chart for fun a while which more or less details the entire project, but I won’t have access to it until the weekend. Some quick errors that I noticed though:

What differentiates the B from the B1 isn’t the ability to fire KULSGR m/90, but the air conditioning among other things. The only domestic Strf 90s that have an AC is the B1 and the Cs. This is because the B1 was planned to be used in international operations where it can get quite a bit hotter than +25C, so an AC and “operational equipment” which includes the upgrades you mentioned between the B and the C was tacked onto 13 of the regular Bs and renamed to B1, it’s essentially a C without the addon armour, regular coax and smoke grenade layout. This was seen as not enough and so the C came about. KULSGR m/90 can be fired through any regular 40mm L/70 bofors gun and doesn’t need any specialized equipment to be used.

The C never got the LIRC unless they recieved it as a final upgrade before getting sent to Ukraine. The only domestic Strf 90s which have it are the Lvkv 90D and Epbv 90D. It was planned to recieve it during the REMO project where it would have been redesignated as the Strf 9040E, but the upgrade package got too big so they only implemented a bit of it and ordered the Strf 9035 instead with the C not seeing any upgrades.

A good source for both of these parts is Rickard. O. Lindström’s website Pansar who was the project lead for the CV90. He has multiple pages talking about the different variants of it in a lot of detail.

It was deemed as having potential, but was in large a failure since they had a lot of problems with aligning the sights correctly to work with the ATGMs.

Good information, can you link or quote in swedish where on the webpage it says that LIRC wasnt added to the C models? In other sources (Tankograd) it says that the C models where fitted with LIRC and i believe in Lindströms and Svantessons book “Svenskt Pansar” they mentioned an upgrade to the sight system but i dont think they explicitly named LIRC but i will have to check.

I believe that the reason as to why the Mk IV dosnt have spall liners, use Spikes, use the E turret amongst others is because they implemented the demonstrator vehicle deliberately so that the D modell with Akeron and 35mm can be implemented in the future.

The “C+” never got built AFAIK, with it merely being what they imagined the next upgrade packages to contain, which happened to be the RENO project, where the C was left out as the E never got built. He also mentions on both the Lvkv and Epbv pages that the RENO project includes an upgraded thermal camera (and even specifies in the shared Epbv/Stripbv page that only the Epbv would get the new thermal camera of those two, so the entire fleet didn’t get it) for those vehicles, but a new thermal camera isn’t mentioned the RENO project of the base Strf 9040.

The list with the RENO upgrades is near the bottom of each.

I have found an interesting variant, however i am still trying to find information about it so don’t have much to share, but this includes an CV9030N Mk.1 with a different turret, a MCT-30 from Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace. Fitted with an 30x173mm Mk.44 Bushmaster cannon, nvd, air tracking with lead indicator, ballistic calculator (might have aps systems as well, uncertian, might be too early model)
Many many interesting ones :D

I found at research paper from 2004 talking about QWIP derived thermal imagers. (Which LIRC is)
https://www.researchgate.net/publication/253600814_High-resolution_QWIP_thermal_imager_for_AFV_upgrade
I will try to access it tomorrow with my University account maybe we will learn more.

Meanwhile this forum claims it was mounted to some B models
Of course no sources at all were provided for that

This journal mentioned the purchase of 42 units by Sweden. Of course it probably is also not a very credible source

Holy mother of god

that one

Shameless plug of my collection:

That forum quote is definetely about some one off prototypes. The regular gunners controls which the “skyttens styrdon” refers to has no buttons to control the sight, those are some special vehicles. The sights controlls are adjusted through a sepparate pannel mounted off to the side.

So the only way of identifying those prototypes would be from the interior?

Yup, nice to know we could potentially get some Bs with better thermals if more info could be found though.

E- och Stripbv 90
On this webbsite he is refering to the RENO on RENO Epbv 90 och Stripbv 90 not mentioning the other models and this was conducted and completed for most vehicles “Vad kommer då att göras inom ramen för detta RENO för Epbv 90 och Stripbv 90:”.

Lvkv 90
On this website he is only refering to (when talking about the RENO) for the lvkv model RENO Lvkv90, “Vad kommer då att göras inom ramen för detta RENO för Lvkv 90:”. This was also completed from my understanding.

Strf 9040
On this website he also speaks of RENO being conducted “Vad kommer då att göras inom ramen för detta RENO för Strf 9040:”.

I cant find anywere where he says that they didnt receive the LIRC or an update to the sight system (Not that it would matter that much for the game :) ) but i could have missed something. Also the books i have talks about the LIRC for C models across the board.

The D models have most of the packages represented on the table accept for add on armor from my understanding.
Arméns trotjänare får välbehövlig renovering - Försvarsmakten

The only thing that was not involed or as you mentioned previously taken out from RENO was the ambition of a higher protection level (adding add-on armor like the one on 9040C) Trots allt – faktisk förmågehöjning stridsfordon 90 – Cornucopia?

It’s indeed never said that the Strf 9040 didn’t get the LIRC on any of those pages, but he does explicitly say the Epbv, Lvkv and not the Stripbv recieved an improved IR camera, and through the chart he made we know that if the base variants got it eventually then it was only after the C+/RENO, excluding the C completely. It would also be odd that he mentions an improved IR camera for all these specialized variants but would omit it on the base variant.
