Bring sim aircraft survivability into realistic.
i flew a b17 in a Sim battle and took multiple me 262 30mm rounds before losing the wing. in rb you get looked at wrong and you lose a wing. there’s no need for aircraft in air rb to be nearly as fragile as they are. simulator aircraft are far more playable at this point just because they can take a few hits without acting like they’ve been hit by a cargo ship dropped from orbit
The reason you felt more survivable in air sim is because it’s significantly more difficult maintaining high intensity gunfire with pinpoint accuracy at long range.
As such, a lot less lead and explosive shells will have impacted your wing.
Other than the instructor helping you stay afloat with damage that requires compensation to not lose control (and potentially prop torque/p-factor/other stuff being toned down), RB and SB endurance under identical conditions should be equivalent.
When shooting within ~300 meters and with a stable platform, you’re ripping off wings in SB even with .50 cals just fine, much less 20/30mm.
Example (2x hispano, Spitfire MkVb vs Do 217)
Example (50.cal, F4U-1D vs Do 217):
This is only possible if you remove mouse aim.
Arcade Bomber Players when they see anything coming there way:
Currently the MK108 HE round seems to be bugged and sometime do little damage, I don’t know if that happened in your case.
Imho you assume that there would be differences in damage models between Air RB and Air SB. As stated by a fellow player above there is no evidence that gaijin felt the need for taking the efforts to create different damage models for these modes.
I recommend that you consider to attend a meeting of a local self-support group for Anonymus MK 108 users - MK 108s are infamous for having a rather high RNG factor regarding damage output. So in one match you kill everything with a single hit - and in the next match even a fighter survives 2-3 hits.
I used some time ago the G8N1 in Air RB and had similar experiences with MK 108s at the receiving end. So whilst it was rather common to survive MK 108 shells the MK 103 shells are way more dangerous.
