BAe Harrier II (UK versions) - Technical data and discussion

Technical data and discussion on the British Harrier II, marks GR.5/GR.5A, GR.7/GR.7A and GR.9/GR.9A. Contributions welcome.

Harrier II GR.5/GR.5A

The GR5 was the RAF’s first model of the second-generation Harrier. The GR5 considerably differed from the USMC AV-8B in terms of avionics, armaments and countermeasures. Forty one GR5s were built.

The GR5A was a minor variant, incorporating design changes in anticipation of the GR7 upgrade. Twenty-one GR5As were built.

1 x Phimat Chaff Pod (216 chaff) This would replace a sidewinder and thus you'd also lose a BOL rail.
RWR which is also tied into the MAWS, automatic chaff release can be configured based of the RWR feedback.
MAWS for the rear 180deg of the aircraft for automatic flare/chaff release. ARI 23348/1
AN/ALQ-184 Defensive ECM Pod
Zeus EW system ARI 23333/1 Marconi Defence Systems

Harrier II GR.7/GR.7A

The GR7 is an upgraded model of the GR5. The first GR7 conducted its maiden flight in May 1990, and made its first operational deployment in August 1995 over the former Yugoslavia.

The GR7A feature an uprated Pegasus 107 engine. GR7As upgraded to GR9 standard retain the A designation as GR9As. The Mk 107 engine provides around 3,000 lbf (13 kN) extra thrust over the Mk 105’s 21,750 lbf (98 kN) thrust.

Welcome back everyone, I copied over the main OP of the thread from the old forum. If there are any specifics you think are missing let me know.

So is all the content from the old forum gone now? Also am I blind or is it not even possible to DM people now?

Its in read only mode and can be found here https://old-forum.warthunder.com/ and you can DM people on here too.

Where is the DM button? I couldn’t find it anywhere.

Should be a message button when you click someones username. If it’s not there I’d imagine you need to post more to build trust to get access to it.

Terma pod can be added to the list of GR.9’s countermeasures
[Image was here, is now posted below]
It’s largely similar to the one on Tornado (5xTACDS plus AN/AAR-57 MAWS). It’s just not pointy and finned

Interesting, I’ve never heard about that before. Got any photos of it?

I tried posting a photo of it in my previous post, but the new forum either doesn’t like the way I did it with bbcode tags it or I don’t have sufficient “trust level” (like i can’t edit my own posts yet…)

Anyway, it’s the pod on the starboard belly pylon here next to DJRP:

Well bugger me, quality find. I’ll update the OP.

ost countermeasures of any aircraft in game.

1000 CM’s with the 4xBOL 1xTACDS(integrated) and TERMA.

Found another shot of the TERMA on GR9

And another TERMA on GR9;

Seems to be the initial one without MAWS. Like this mockup used for fit check:

Apparently it’s known as Terma MCP-H or MCP-8.2

Bonus pic with the yellow AN/AAR-57 sensors visible

You can find the brochure here;

Sadly doesn’t cover the GR9 version but still.

This one does mention GR9 though;

Hey @Gunjob the GR.7 section has a mistake where it refers to the Mk.20 Rockeye as the CBU-1000 instead of the CBU-100 / -99.

And of course I made a mistake, its actually in the GR.5 / AV-8B section.

and yet can’t edit the post

I figured you mean the GR.5/A no worries, fixed now.

Yeah GR.9/A will have 4xBOL 304 just like GR.7/A
