I got just as excited as you did when i first saw that a few days ago but no. it states on the image that the Z was used for Hexagonal explosives instead of Trotyl on that specific round. That and the proxy for 40mm was not in active service until 1975
Darnit,
btw, ive been talking back and forth with the Museum director at Arsenalen and well. They dont have a clue about where, what it is.
What could this be about, (assuming anybody else speaks swedish…)
Dont actually know the power difference between the explosive types on WT
Would PBX be better than Octol?
Holy crap i found something new about the Lvkv 42!!
I can’t read the text
Here’s what I could make out
40-mm S.P. ANTI-AIRCRAFT GUN L/70
The high fire power and laying speeds of the gun combined with the good maneuverability of the carriage make this type of weapon especially suitable for the protection of (?) both air and ground attacks. By (?) of a (?) system and (?) used in combination with a (?) fire (control?) instrument
Weight of projectiles: 0.96 kg
Muzzle velocity: 1000 m/sec
Rate of fire: 240 rounds/min
Elevating speed: 45 deg/sec
Traversing speed: 70 deg/sec
Field of elevation: -5 to (+85?) deg
Field of traverse: unlimited
Total weight: approx. (13.500 kg?)
Max. traveling speed: 60 km/h
PBX is a collective name for a group of explosives bonded with plastic. but i’ve seen numbers ranging from 10% better than TNT and 60% better than TNT
Octol i think is around 50% better than TNT.
so it very much depends on what they use as the explosive in this case.
more often than not its mostly done to make the shells less sensitive to outside influence without loosing to much power.
Edit:
after searching for a bot it seems like PBX 80/20 is basically the same as Octol but less sensitive to external forces.
its been forever since ive found anything new about the Lvkv 42, altough i knew most of this. Still nice to have some kind of source
You’re looking at the wrong version. The m/48 with m/48-36 barrel is the L/60 barrel adapted to the lvakan m/48, a configuration which afaik was mainly used for training. If you compare the figures of the lvakan m/36 and lvakan m/48 with the m/48-36 barrel, you can see that the shells, charges, and velocity values are the same, albeit with the single exception of the slsgr m/483 which seems to fire and updated version of the m/36s charge and a velocity of 900 m/s. The correct velocity for the L/70 is 1000 m/s and is widely given in various Bofors publications of the time, including the page from the Bofors broschure with the lvkv 42 posted by karnitin. I’m not sure why it is specifically listed as 40 mm lvakan m/48 D, but it might have to do with the DIRSI sight used by the L/70
The lvkv 42 only ever used the L/70 barrel and associated charges as far as is known, it was specifically marketed as an L/70 SPAAG
I wouldn’t doubt there being a ballistic computer similar to what the M42 had, where they had to input data and it would give a mechanical lead (i may be wording this wrong)
Guessing this is from somewhere on swedish tank archive? Could you provide the link for context?
as i understand it the lvakan m/48 can be converted between the old ammo and the new with a kit whilst the m/48 D version is strictly new. but im not sure.
in any case if we want the different types of projectiles in game then we have to go with the older and slower ammo as during that time only the slsgr is listed as available for the newer faster version.
There was supposed to be a separate vehicle with a fire director per two gun battery, so one lvev fm/49 for every two lvkv fm/49
I found a picture of that twin a while back… but ive since lost the webcite…
The high Fire power and laying speeds of the gun combined with good manueverablity of the carriage. Make this type of weapon especially suitable for the protection of the troops against both air and ground attacks. By means of a remote-control system the gun can also be used in connection with a seperate fire control instrument.
Ok, now im going to shut my eyes for a minute. I struggled but its done
Never seen anything like that but I suppose it’s possible. I don’t think it would be possible to fire old ammo using the new barrel without modification however. At the end of the day, using data for the m/48 with m/48-36 barrel doesn’t help because the vehicle and gun in-game uses an L/70 barrel anyhow and all velocities achieved with different ammunition in the L/70 are above 900 m/s so it’s wrong in-game. I’d have to check WT to see exactly what rounds it has in-game but the L/70 has a wider ammunition selection at least in later AMKATs but I’m not sure when these were introduced
Rounds ingame have around 850 m/s
