Unfortunately, while the AH-2 is certain to have used the XTS2 if it was fully built, I wasn’t able to find anything 100% proving this. That being said, I hope to one day suggest this helicopter for Japan!
If this were to come into the game with the Type 96 MPMS missiles, I can see them being given a treatment similar to the Martels on the Buccaneer S.2B, wherein the man-in-the-loop guidance is replaced with simply being fire and forget IR like the Spikes and PARS, since man-in-the-loop guidance would be horribly game breaking. Personally I would say I would like it, and given the XTS-2 powerplant was prototyped and tested, much of the design is carried over from the OH-1, and the weaponry all exists, I think it would be fine to place into the game imo.
I wish the JGSDF had acquired this after the first AH-64DJP batch. Would be a great heli in the current meta, especially with MPMS.
Heck yes especially with those type 96s
+1, no idea on what heli BRs are like, so I chose the lowest lol.
I believe gaijin has said they don’t plan to add man-in-the-loop guidance anytime soon, so they’d likely be Fire and Forget. With their huge warhead and top attack capability, they’d be very nice to use and might finally get me to grind out a heli tree.
What’s the predicted range for the MPMS?

The Japanese heli tree so far consists of a licensed helicopters that generally perform worse than counterparts of other nations, there isn’t really much incentive to researching Japanese helicopters beyond just having any helicopters in the tree. This could be a great addition to give something exciting for that end of the line spot, especially a unique Japanese developed design like it.
BR really depends on Type 96 performance, so we’ll have to see what Gaijin would do when they (hopefully) implement this helicopter.
AH-X (AH-2) is a very beautiful helicopter. It is very necessary for Japan, which has very limited choice of combat helicopters. The only non-ASW helicopters are:H-13H, UH-2,SH-60L. For a future suggestion, +10000 from me

ironically this would be a better AA since it can lock low flying helo and non-smoked manpads for fixed wings
Is this why its not on the suggestion page instead? I mean, I do think its got a viable place in WT but at the same time, I would prefer seeing at least a real-life mockup before adding it. If Gaijin ever revisits the Japanese Tech Tree and want to give it a massive update, then this surely is the thing that can bring in the big bucks
I’m against purely paper vehicles, but I felt that since enough of the design is grounded due to parts commonality with the OH-1 and XTS2, that it could be in War Thunder. Considering that they did research to see if it could handle the 20 mm cannon, there’s gotta be some sort of mockup out there, but a lot about the AH-2 is shrouded in secrecy.
I tried really hard to get it approved, but I don’t have any conclusive evidence saying that the AH-2 would’ve used the XTS2 :(
I think its got the same problem as the O-I as well but this is a really well-researched post you have and even if theres no suggestion, its good that we can at least discuss this as early as now because sooner or later, Gaijin will have to contend with lesser known vehicles and vehicles still under strict confidentiality clauses.
Its no paper vehicle thats for sure. Maybe Japan keeping this a closely guarded secret has got to be with the fact that Japan cant develop weapons expressly used for offensive actions and ‘Attack’ Helicopter is just not something they can worm their way around lol
Actually, Japan was trying to develop their own indigenous attack helicopter for a while now. The secrecy probably just has more to do with typical MoD tight-lippedness.
I am against paper vehicles that never left the drawing board, especially as that would lead to many unfeasible designs. Tbh, it seems that based on the sources we have now, the AH-2 is a grey area where you can interpret it however you wish.
And if it’s any comfort, the O-I was actually built, so it should have no problem in WT
And yet no amount of planning, study, and pre-developmental conception seems to have resulted in this vehicle leaving the drawing board (that we know of at the moment, I’d be happy if proven otherwise in time). For now, I will consider this vehicle to be paper, and as such I will have to vote no.
The more, the merrier…especially for Japan.
With gaijin’s current requirements, an essential part being purpose built for the use in this helicopter actually makes it not-paper.
From what I understand, the XTS-2 made the AH-2 design a possibility, but the conception of the AH-2 did not result in the creation of the XTS-2. This powerplant would be an important feature of the AH-2 for sure, but it was not developed for this variant specifically; but rather as a potential upgrade for the base OH-2 first.
In this way it doesn’t really fit Gaijin’s requirements of a “vehicle-specific part” because the AH-2 was not the reason it was created.
Way I see it, the XTS-2 upgrade was only needed due to the extra weight of armament:
Potential armament I suppose, but since it was only created as a general upgrade for any heavier weaponry envisioned, I don’t really see how it’s specific to the AH-2 in particular. I wouldn’t really have a problem seeing this vehicle in-game, but as it stands I just don’t feel like it meets the gane’s minimum requirements.
+1 I love how it looks
