The Japanese Ho-Ri SPG project – full technical and historical analysis (spreadsheet)

Before I’d show the proccess and results, I’d like to thank a few people who have contributed to the analysis the most – and helped to finalize it as accurately and quickly as possible:

  • aizenns – for initial 2018 suggestion of Ho-Ri, now absent from the Internet, but is still accessible on webarchive.org (New Experimental Gun-Tank (Ko), Ho-Ri : Japanese Jagdtiger - Passed for Consideration - War Thunder - Official Forum)
  • skultew – for providing access to it, helping with reading Japanese documents, explaining mechanized loading proccess
  • B000B – for doing the initial historical research on Ho-Ri project and providing document identifiers
  • Davidnjk – for providing a very detailed and authentic visual reconstruction of Ho-Ri vehicle
  • shlee2393 – for providing details on the gun assembly, locations and tests
  • SPECIAL THANKS to @_qaz – for providing photographs of documents and their translation, translation of book pages related to the project, reconstructing the detailed compressed blueprint, providing crucial info on technical and historical analysis to the tiniest details

Research proccess
I’ve encountered such an issue that finding factual Ho-Ri project information on the open web is very difficult. MaiWaffentrager, who allegedly worked for Gaijin to add currently very unrealistic Ho-Ri vehicles, has created blogs, which were accused of providing fabricated info on the Japanese SPG

Knowing so, I decided to try my luck with the help of Tank Encyclopedia community, but probably nobody has done a full research there, before. My last resort was JP / ASEAN / SK War Thunder research community. There, I was provided with a link to the 2018 suggestion of historical Ho-Ri, where I’ve finally encountered actual sources linked to chronology of Ho-Ri project, however, it was somewhat poorly written and the images were gone due to unreasonable discontinuation of the old forum

Later, qaz had provided me with those images, as well as reconstructed 08.1944 blueprint and translation of Shikenshi table. After finishing the analysis via compiled table, I helped Davidnjk to make a correct reconstruction of how the vehicle would have looked from the side. I want to present everyone’s labour that I managed to compile in a single place

Spreadsheet
Spreadsheet features an overview of known stages of Ho-Ri development – Ho-Ri I (version with vertical casemate and a gun with shorter tray for smaller charges), Ho-Ri II (a version depicted on a mock-up which was used - not without issues - by Gaijin, and a version with slightly angled, central-placed casemate, both with gun with longer tray for large charges), and a fabricated Ho-Ri III info

If you zoom out (Ctrl+scroll down), you will see full-scale reconstructions on the right. The Ho-Ri I reconstruction is based on a drawing provided by Akira Takeuchi, but since we do not have full Ho-Ri I blueprint, we cannot be 100% sure if this reconstruction is definitely historical. The blueprints are only slightly teased and held in private hands. At least, we recovered a realistic mantlet form from it

Below technical table, you will see a chronology of Ho-Ri sto-ry, from it’s start in July 1943, to culminations in entire 1944, when most blueprints were released, when the only two known gun were built, and when armor for Ho-Ri vehicles was manufactured, to the failure of 1945 – year, when only Chi-Ri tank was assembled, and after that, both Chi-Ri and Ho-Ri projects would be cancelled as the World War II would be coming to an end

Currently, this compilation of Ho-Ri information is the fullest on the Internet, and is mostly accurate – though, as you will find out, some facts are still ‘to doubt’

I must also mention that I am planning to release two full Wikipedia articles on Ho-Ri, and Noveos_Republic might prepare an entirely new WT Forum suggestion (even despite the developer had spit in the face of WW2 vehicles) – we will see in a few months! I also hope this information will once be used for a Tank Encyclopedia article

Amazing work, and amazing drawing. This is the best source I’ve seen on the Ho-Ri, both on the English and Japanese internet

A Chi-Ri Jagdtiger. Makes a lot more sense than what we have in-game.

In the meanwhile, Davidnjk provided us with two more reconstructions, now based on, as presumed, earlier mock-up of Ho-Ri (presumably made before Chi-Ri design was decided, thus lacking most of it’s features). It has the longest chassis among all, but the hull is more compact. Transmission and engine have a good space in the hull, while all the crew remains in a large casemate. “Mod” version is a what-if – if the mock up version would end up being accepted for (failed) production, probably it would also get the rangefinder and enhanced gun depression device

I have almost no idea what I am looking at lol, but I wanted to add a reply to say your post is excellent. Everything is very well organized and easy to read. The “rendered?” images you guys created are superb. Bravo 👏

Looking forward for the suggestion post, I’ll provide full support for a more realistic vehicle.

Been waiting for this!

Very well made! I knew of this reconstruction, but not of any info regarding the vehicle.

Bit of a long shot, but if I can help with anything just let me know ^^

qaz reported that there were actually two guns produced. I don’t know if the February 1945 data is on just the mantlet change of the first gun, or that is when the 2nd gun was assembled. Updated some data in the sheet, will update details as soon as qaz gives more info

I’m not sure if qaz has already mentioned this, but the two guns were produced simultaneously in December 1944. Therefore, the mantlet change was applied to both guns.

Also, I think the timing in the description is slightly off. The corrective functions test took place in March, not February. That said, since the decision to modify the mantlet was made after the first completion test in December, it’s possible that the modifications were finished at the factory by February.

Both guns were fully completed on May 27. At the end of the war, one of the guns was at the 1st Manufacturing Plant of the Osaka Army Arsenal. The location of the other gun is unknown, but if things proceeded as planned, it would have been at Mitsubishi’s Tamagawa Plant.

I find it really interesting that the sloped variant was considered far more than previously thought

So this would be like another tank or is it suposed to be replacement for ho ri production?

Tbf since it has armor that of chi ri in the hull its not worth more than 6.0 . Only good in hull down.

Probably 6.3 cuz the 2×20mm aa

would be nice to get rid of entirely fake vehicles ofc, but Gaijin doesn’t do that. It’s just an issue that their Ho-Ris are constructionally incorrect too; the 2nd gun wouldn’t fit inside the casemate, and the crew in the hull is impossible – the engine compartment is way larger in real life. So large that on Ho-Ri “II” it takes space of the casemate a bit.

Gaijin could at least remodel the current Ho-Ris to accomodate with the mockup and blueprints. And add real Ho-Ri, too

Very well-informed and also well-made post +1.

This is my favourite picture/iteration of a more ‘realistic’ Ho-Ri by Schirby:

I made one recently, too. With a larger rangefinder, so it’s more realistic. Larger casemate and hull, lacks AA gun though

I’d like to see Japan’s last defenders. The Ho-Ri II (Jagdtiger) plus a Ki-201 or, for example, a Ki-93 (or Ki-119 or A7M3). Since Japan can’t have heavy tanks, they need powerful tank destroyers. I’m still waiting and keeping my fingers crossed for @Noveos_Republic Ho-Ri suggestions.

Great job done. You have my 100% support. May Emperor Hirohito help you.
