Doomed to fail from being so mid.
They should’ve gone all in on the coke Saab was giving their engineers when making the Viggens and Drakens, (God if the US hadn’t been so lame and denied aim 54 sale we could’ve had the most silly Viggen.)
Same deal with RB72 which idk why we don’t have in game, it had completed models with known stats, basically a magic 2 seeker with 15km range so baby R27ET
I am quite sad that we bought AIM-9L instead of continuing to fund the RB72. The airforce was unhappy with the performance of the 9L when they arrived, both kinematically and seeker wise. Was cheaper to just buy 9L though :(
The RB72 would’ve basically been a step between the 9L and IRIS-T in performance all around.
You were forced into it by the US into buying the 9L
This I have not heard about, how did they force us?
US basically told Sweden if they pursued production of a domestic IR missile they’d cut all trade with Sweden going forward.
Sweden gave in as production of one missile wasn’t worth future relations with trades.
Additionally iirc the RB72 had gone over budget quite a bit. I’ve seen some documents from FMV regarding the cancellation of the RB72 but I’d have to try and find them.
Like I said it’s been a hot while since I looked at some of the RB72 program things so if I have anything wrong feel free to correct me
I just knew it was quite a bit over budget, the US forcing us to lay it down was news to me, but I do not think it too far fetched of a thing to happen
any proof of this? the AIM-9L was just cheaper and a more proven design overall
I’d have to search around, like I said if I’m wrong feel free to correct me. This was just what I remember was passed around a while back. Someone posted an image mentioning pressure from the US on FMV to make a decision.
Though given the US was also not interested in selling other weapons asked for by FMV it’s not surprising IE AIM-54. Its been a few years since I did any big dives into RB72 and most of the stuff wasn’t recorded too well. So again if I’m wrong apologies but a lot of it was just old posts.

Had to scroll for a bit, I saved this a while back but I’ve also seen different cases for why it was procured given Sweden had a hard time getting the US to sell them anything but then other places will say that the US always tried selling them. Though given JA-37AU basically fell through since Aim-54 was denied sale I lean on the side that the US was more difficult when it came to trying to have weapons sold to Sweden.
I’ll need to see if I can find a copy here or have someone send me some pages from this if I wanna see a better explanation as this is where most images of RB72 come from.

@Timpun any chance you might have this book or be able to find a library with it? Given I have no swedish family it’s unlikely I’ll be going there any time soon and I’m currently away in Kaarina
Fr, 80-90s aviation products were doomed from the start after they took away the meth and crack, we could’ve had so much peak yet we’re doomed to deal with all this mid…
Maybe someday we’ll see it, gaijin has their usual pick and choose antics when it comes to experimental weaponry after all.
May true bullshit rest in peace.
May we have a moment in silence for our lost peak.
(it’s just a bunch of random crap that sadly died… was too lazy to label it tho…)

Looks lika a prototype of su34
ARMA 3 ass apache
no it isn’t
because it is
To be fair up until the addition of AESA typhoon, the best top tier plane in terms of KD was Rafale for several months straight, and no new top tier missile was introduced.
well there was 120D but thats still AMRAAM, and PL-12A but PL-12 nerf. So i should say “no new relevant top tier missile”.
And since MICAs lack range but have insane close rsnge performance, one does need to conclude that the close ramge performance is what matters.
Or mattered i suppose.
AMRAAM is still AMRAAM kinematically. It will never become HOBS missile. Its just that now its much harder to ambush someone since everyone and their mother have AESA radars.
the context pertains to IR missiles, the rafale does not have the MICA IR yet.
the R-73 is not a good dogfighting missile. majority of vehicles at toptier have large caliber flares.
i’ve never died to an R-73 in a dogfight as long as i flared, and i’ve never gotten a kill with an R-73 in a dogfight as long as my target flared. dogfight meta isn’t ruled by HOBS TVC IR missiles, its ruled by who can maneuver better and gun the enemy down.
even at low tier, say 12.3 where the R-73 is introduced on fighters, its still not very good in a dogfight. either you get curbstomped by 4th gens before you can get a proper launch because you’re a MiG-21, or you run into planes that still have large caliber flares. going further down to 11.0 where the R-73 is introduced on attackers, your R-73 won’t connect with the target unless you happen to be right up their ass because you’re a subsonic low-level strike aircraft.
go any higher than 12.3 with R-73s and you hit a wall of planes with large caliber CMs. the R-73 having TVC is genuinely just a gimmick, i’ve never gotten a proper kill where i thought “damn, TVC really carried that” because most of my launches are long range straight shots
On second thought ye, thrust vectoring was mentioned within the context of IRs, my bad.
