The F-16AJ’s current placement at 12.7 in Air RB is no longer justifiable. The jet is severely outclassed in the current matchmaking, and the logic keeping it at 12.7 is highly inconsistent when compared to other aircraft in the game.
The “Two Sparrow” Double Standard
The primary argument for keeping the F-16AJ at 12.7 instead of 12.3 is its access to 2x AIM-7F Sparrows.
However, carrying only two medium-range radar missiles is not a performance advantage that warrants a 12.7 rating, especially when compared to what is allowed at 12.3:
- F-4EJ Kai (12.3): Sits at a lower BR while carrying four AIM-7Ms alongside four AIM-9Ls. It also uses the same AN/APG-66 radar as the F-16.
- F-4S Phantom II (12.0): Carries four AIM-7Fs, utilizes a Helmet Mounted Displau (HMD), and sits at an even lower BR.
If the F-4EJ Kai is allowed to carry a full load of four superior AIM-7M Sparrows plus four AIM-9Ls at 12.3, there is no logical reason why the F-16AJ is penalized with a 12.7 rating for carrying only two Sparrows. To even equip those two AIM-7Fs on the F-16, you have to sacrifice two of your IR missiles, leaving you with a weaker overall payload than the 12.3 Phantom.
The Reality of 12.7 Matchmaking
Sitting at 12.7 means the F-16AJ is constantly pulled into uptiers against 13.7 aircraft. In this environment, the jet’s armament is entirely useless.
To guide an AIM-7F, you must maintain a continuous hard radar lock. In matches dominated by active radar-guided (Fox-3) missiles, you cannot afford to fly straight to guide a Sparrow. The moment you attempt to lock an opponent, you are forced defensive by incoming active missiles, instantly breaking your lock.
This leaves the F-16AJ fighting top-tier jets using nothing but four basic AIM-9Ls, which lack the IRCCM of modern missiles. The F-16AJ simply does not have the avionics, countermeasures, or the armament to survive these uptiers.
12.3 is the Proper Placement
If the F-16AJ were moved to 12.3, it would align logically with the standard F-16A Block 10. While the AJ would have the addition of two Sparrows, this is entirely balanced by the fact that it only carries two, and must sacrifice two IR missiles to do so. This is a fair trade-off that fits perfectly within the 12.3 meta, especially when compared to the 12.3 EJ Kai carrying four Sparrows and four Sidewinders.
The F-16AJ needs to be moved to 12.3 to make it a usable aircraft again.
