I’m convinced it’s going to be the shenanigans route at this point.
No it’s not. But the Su-34 is not equal enough in the BVR world, nor is the Su-27SM to the F-15C or the F-16C. Until the R-77-1 comes, and something has at least the N011 Bars to go with it, all Russian designed planes regardless of capabilities (TVC, HMD, nice dogfight missiles) will be hugging the ground and playing rat-mode. That’s the problem.
Must be nice lol. We have broken FM’s, broken radar refresh patterns, and drag that’s incorrectly modelled for our only ARH. Pretty sure the F-15E wouldn’t be too much for the game if they just fixed the rest of the nations.
If you’ve played the Su-34 with a 6x R-27ER you’ll notice two things. One you can joust just a little bit with the SPAMRAAMers. But it’s mostly just to force them defensive, and you are dumb if you think you’re just going to sit there and guide that missile in to the target. You will eat an AIM-120, even if you get the kill, you probably won’t escape one launched at you by the time you finish.
As nice as the R-27ER’s velocity is, it suffers in the terminal phase in both the early and terminal phases of guidance depending on the target distance and altitude. It really only shines in good conditions, and when you are chasing down someone trying to return to base.
I was hesitant to switch to a full R-77 loadout on the Su-34, but I eventually did, and it’s the only way I play it now. I still run R-27ET’s on the Su-27SM, and I probably will continue on the SM because as you’ve said, it is the best IR missile in the game. That being said, gaijin has not seriously worked on it’s seeker nor the R-73’s, the FOV really doesn’t focus down well enough in all aspect for either missile, and they become situation dependent. For context, a rear aspect on an F-14 is basically a guaranteed kill unless someone dumps flares, gets some terrain help, or can somehow out run the missile (possible, but difficult). Likewise, the R-73 is great in HOB shots from unconventional angles, mostly because the flare dispersal pattern does not distract the missile, this is also why 1.25-0.9km shot are also good. Anything beyond 1.5km and the target has a chance, unlike the AIM-9M which demands you shut off your engine, change direction, and spam flares (even then, not a guaranteed dodge).
