Radar specifically give you range information. Which i confirmed with markimash was the case with the M163 which is a tracking only radar.
You do not at all need a LRF on a spaa because radar gives the same information

There are 3 nations that use the missle at 8.3
If your radar is capable of locking the helicopter at 2-3KM.
Then those helicopters are also unbalanced.
Should i tell him about the swedish heli at 7.7 with 6 missles?
They have a 2KM firing range.
Hei @markimash can you check lock range on the M163?
It has a 7km per the wiki, but you know. Just in case
And you claim that spaa below 8.3 cant lock past 1km
Helicopters are hard to lock yes.
They are only hard to lock with IR missiles. Radar works fine.
The m163 has a max range of 5km but its radar is different than most. It sort of work like pulse doppler with how it needs the planes to be coming towards you to get a further lock.
With them adding optical tracking, even that wont be a big problem.
Yeah thats fairly normal
Not all RADAR works the same.
True but it is more noticable on the m163. As for lead range, seems to be about 2km assuming headon engagement
Nono, i just want to know what range you can lock.
Since locking with the tracking radar gives you range information. Which is all you need to engage the helicopter with reasonable effectiveness.
Fair. I will uptier it to 8.3 and hope i can find some helis
I will just quickly put something out.
M163 will be your best SPAA even in a 8.7 lineup, which means it will be able to see 9.7 helis.
Nation like Germany has a pretty stacked lineup at 9.3, but will only have Gepard to use as an SPAA, which in the end means Gepard will end up facing 10.3 helis.
Same exact thing with Shilka, itβs your best option in a 9.0 lineup, thus seeing 10.0 aircraft will be possible.
In a real life scenario, early radar-SPAAs are often pretty underpowered to deal with helis.
This is a very valid point. However, this thread is in reference to the 8.3 helis with the 3.5km missles.
It would be great to see them plug those spaa holes
Got a match with a heli. Was able to lock him a few times. Average lock range of about 1.7km with a max of 2.4km
