The radar uses pulse doppler to filter out ground clutter. Basically, the ground moves towards you at the same speed (because you move towards the ground) so the radar filters the returns out. If you have something that would move towards you at its own speed (for example: you move at 300 m/s so the ground that comes towards you is coming at that speed so it’s being filtered out. If you have an aircraft that moves towards you at 300 m/s then the clouseure will be 600 m/s. This tells the radar that there is something.)
If a helicopter hovers in the same spot it won’t move towards you therefore it is being filtered out.
You will eventually get a lock but the best things to use against them are AGMs and Fox 2s

It’s not a Rafale issue. All radars struggle (probably too much) to detect a helicopter. In the typhoon I run a tpod and brimstones specifically to shoot them down as neither Aim-9M or Aim-120s are reliable enough counter.

In the Rafale you best bet is the AASMs

Very nice and helpful of you

just to clarify this is purely in game, IRL the radar works the same way but the helicopters rotating blades will give a radar return outside of the filter speed so it will be detected.

Thank you

I thought that was the case

Wow, so helpful. You should help newcomers out with your excellent help and commentary.

IRL, most PD Radar would detect the giant spinning fan going close to mach above the helicopter, in War Thunder it’s just a spinning jpeg image (exagerration)

Radars sucks vs helicopters and you wont lock any missles at <2km. “realistic” gameplay.
