I got one of my wings shot off in the p47 d 28 re and in my opinion it made the flight performance better
Destroyed in the context of the game means damaged beyond repair. In this situation, the plane will be damaged beyond repair, but can still shoot as long as the pilot is alive
There was an instance of a mid-air collision between an F-15 and an A-4. The F-15 lost its right wing at the root and the pilot only realized the extent of the damages that after landing. They thought, they might have lost an aileron or something.

That’s no fun and not remotely realstic due to human survival instinct but it’s not impossible. You could as easily complain about tank crews calmly shooting you because the owner pumped $US40 into immortal crewmembers. Not remotely realistic but possible.
