Some players are interested in WWII stuff some in modern stuff and some in both. Gaijin make it really difficult for players that are interested in modern stuff so no wonder they learn habit of ODL so easily as it is only viable way to get there before you loose interest in game. I played Ground forces in closed beta and I left game after it was release. I personally came back because of the modern vehicles as those are the most interesting for me. If I was forced to play through WWII crap all way to modern stuff I would loose interest quite fast. I play sometimes rank IV and lower for change, but it is mostly few battles before I jump right back to rank V or higher. Also my habit of ODL was not learned from grinding with premium as I bought XM-1 and XM-8 and used backups to grind US, but was caused by frustration of late game from CAS. Switching to ODL made it better experience as I do not have to deal with CAS and spawnkillers.
That. Truth has been said.
I think the experience you’re sharing perfectly highlights the essence of my comment.

You paid approximately $100-200 for two tanks (depending on when you got the XM-8) because you wanted to skip most of the grind. I don’t find that to be a bad thing either, almost everyone’s spent a tidy sum on this game who’s played for any length of time. However, because you tried to buy your way to the only part of the game you liked, once you got their and saw that you have to play with people who are experiencing other parts of the game (CAS), you decided you would forcibly remove yourself from that as well.
You’re a free person, you get to do what you want, but I’ll say it again- This game cultivates an atmosphere of “this is MY game I paid for and it’ll be played MY way or not at all!” at top tiers. Any freedom to retaliate against the players that kill you or the teammates that didn’t cooperate the way you want is used, thus ODL exists.
Could be true but that isn’t the case for most people.
For example, I hugely prefer the WW2/cold war stuff and find that the modern gameplay is severely lacking any form of fun.
But when I play at around 7.7, there are so many problmes with CAS or spawncampers that I don’t bother to respawn and take another 5 minutes to reach a good spot without being sniped to death…
In most case you can determine very early on which team is going to win and when I see that it’s mine, I play my current tank to the max, then if I die I take a fighter / CAS and by the time I’m done there’s usually no point in spawning another tank because the battle is folded and there’s nothing to do.
Isn’t that just another way of saying “if Gaijin won’t give me a team that produces wins, I’d rather not play at all” or “if Gaijin won’t give me the BR’s I want to see, I’d rather not play at all”? It’s not as if the tech trees are invisible to you, so you know what kind of vehicles you can run into up-front, so you’re only getting what’s “right on the tin” as the saying goes. It’s all in your right to do so, it’s a game not a job, but if everyone does this the quality of the games goes down.
The burden is squarely on Gaijin’s shoulders to produce better gameplay that snowballs less in the long term, but I can’t help but feel like the sentiments of some ODL’s I’ve met flirts with entitlement.
Not at all. I am willing to play anything anywhere but if I’m having fun doing so.
The problem arises when the battle is locked and there’s nothing I can do without getting killed. Getting killed is part of the game, yes, but getting killed by 3 tanks spawncamping while you’re trying to get out of your spawn isn’t fun at all.
Same goes for CAS. It comes a point where if I leave cover to go and cap a point, I’m going to get wrecked by helis, so why would I do that ?
In the end, I don’t care about losing or winning as long as there’s something I can do that provides fun to me (the goal of plyaing a game isn’t it ?)
If I can’t even get back into battle because all the roads are cut, then I’m not going to bother.
This is probably caused by War Thunder not having any competition. Anyone who loves those tank mechanics, that War Thunder have, is forced to play in one game mode available. Realistic battle configuration combined with realistic damage models of tanks and with arcade control is just perfect. If there was realistic tank-only mode or some realistic EC mode for tanks I would probably switch back to full lineups in those modes.
But for now, everyone, who loves those mechanics, have to play one game mode. Also players often forget that taking one tank in lineup is as valid as taking 10 vehicles as there is no requirement of how many vehicles you need to join GRB.
True. Gaijin would do well to offer game modes that satisfy a wider range of playstyles instead of 4-5 that appeal to almost no one and 1-2 that group the majority together. Issues like this, to me, either feel like a problem the developer hasn’t properly addressed, or an attitude the player base needs to adjust to harmonize better. I went in feeling the latter and now lean to the former.
The game already has a few mechanics rewarding people for playing bigger line ups but people either can’t do the math or just don’t want to.
Longer in a battle the higher the modifiers.
Every vehicle you ace reduces the next vehicle research cost by about 20% with the bonus rp you earn. Play multiple vehicles in a single battle you research and earn that free rp quicker.
If you die early and lose money you won’t make that back by leaving the battle. Respawning you could get the kills or base caps, assists, repairs etc that pay off your losses from the first death.
These are not new mechanics and make the games grind very fast, especially when coupled with premium time.
The problem is and it’s a fact, but I can also get out after one death, for example, I play a must, I drive, barely 4 minutes of the battle pass and I already get a bomb and die, this does not only apply to the Maus, planes are cancer, and they should have a limitation that only after 8 minutes of the battle can they be taken
The sad part is, there probably never be any competition. And if there for some miracle be some competition it will never be on scale of war thunder. So they can do almost whatever they want and get away with it because players only choice is to play or not play war thunder for those mechanics.
I know there is GHPC, but it is only PvE and like most of games, that have some sort of military vehicles, it only has USA and USSR vehicles, which is boring for me as I only play French, Japanese or Italian vehicles.
I started today with 3 rounds and all got lost due to ODL … the other team also got players who stayed after the 1st death. And oh wonder they managed to win … My 4th round started with even two guys quiting right back to the hangar … guess who won …
It causes balance issues and ruining the fun for others. And it causes a chain reaction to others also leaving soon.
I understand why ODL leave. But for my understanding it is kinda lazy and a mindset problem. Why can other find fun in a challenge others don’t even try to take. Yeah it’s a game, we all want fun. But causing fun issues due to ODL is a decision a player takes. Matchmaking, map rotation, up- & downtiers is a decision Gaijin is taking. The best fights I lost where when my team and the enemy team has thrown 4-5 tanks in the battle and it took 25min for a hell of a fight. Then even loosing can be fun and rewarding.
It is even no fun for me by dominating a team who suffers from ODL … it’s simply not fair for me.
You don’t have to agree what I say and feel about ODL. I know ODL players will always find an excuse to act like they act. And I heared many. None where satisfying in a way where I can say ah ok that is really a thing where you can’t do anything about it.
The only ODL excuse for me is when a battle suffered from ODL and others get spawncamped after 3min and there is simply no other spawn.
Well it is what it is🤷♂️ as long as gaijin sells premiums like hot cakes they won’t do anything about it
And that is my biggest fear. Leaving me only with the decision to adapt or deinstall. And it is kinda hard because I really like the game and it is really rewarding if the matches are nice played. So I can only appeal to ODL players to rethink and try to understand what this is doing to the game.
It can get to a point where half the team will quit to hangar even before the match started … so when will Gaijin start to make changes? When the money stops …
When the snail will not move, the community must. Join an active squadron and try to queue in with as many people as you can from the start.
Don’t know if I’m ready for a squad. And I’m also a bit sophisticated … in my old WoT times I got a mate I could trust blindly. We worked as a unit and it was a dream. 3 years side by side ripping teams apart. Maybe I’m afraid that this can’t comeback … don’t know how to describe. Mates like this are so rare …
The same reason that some people find fun in activites including chains and leather while other don’t …
We all have a different opinion on what fun is, but for me driving 5 minutes and getting blown by a bomb isn’t.
Simply true and I respect that.
For me it is a challenge I’m willing to take. And I got better and better by not quitting right away.
Of course, but that also depends on how long was the first life before ODL.
I usually quit when my first tank died and the spawn is already being sniped. In other words, i don’t spawn when there is nothing I can do except dying.
However, it can also happen that I leave out of pure spite :
Got this map today in a full uptier and there’s no way I’m even playing on that thing. Brought a tank, got killed near the cap by an AA playing TD, done.
Not good for the team I know, but seriously ? I’m sure there’s plenty of people loving this configuration but I’m not.
I’m the kind of player that doesn’t mind an up tier (challenge) but on a map like this? Well it sucks. I usually spawn a SPAA but as noted, SPAA, open ground, no cover or concealment, won’t last long.
If ODL is as big an issue, then it must be applied equally to both sides, meaning balance still remains?
