I feel biggest issues with balancing aircraft guns come down to all game modes having the same damage model.
Damage models that would feel proper for SB would feel too weak for RB. Damage models that feel proper for RB feel overperforming for SB and too weak for AB. Damage models for AB are ridiculous for RB and SB.
(main driver being aircraft engine performance and thus speed, ease of aiming and how it affects the range you’re shooting at. Like, if a bullet has 23mm pen at 300 meters but goes down to like 9 mm or so at ARB/Arcade distances… you go from “.50 cals are pilot-killers and engine-wreckers” to “.50 cal just gives me hits.”)
We seriously need game-mode adjusted munition and damage models.
Bf 109 F-4 from a high-six is immune to P-51C10 for pilot snipes from a lot of angles (equivalent protection: 25mm) at 500+.
At 200 meters (realistic firing distance for what the guns were designed for IRL and actually shows up in sim): not guaranteed penetration, but with volume of fire you WILL penetrate and kill the pilot even if you’re hitting both the fuel tank armour, the fuel tank and the pilot armour.
The 20mm guns had a lot of issues at the time of development and the .50 made aiming the weapons super easy and honestly with 6 of them it was more than enough to take out early jets especially given how most jet engines and aircraft were barely flying to start with.
Originally I was going to mention the Ayanami class Destroyer 1958 yet it’s partly nerfed by being rated a frigate & bugged due to how the devs model ammunition, but I’ve one thing that’s even worse than that monster.
Encounter mode static convoy on the map Norway, that things accuracy is to damn good, if you got two teams spawn & to not fire at each other & just let the AI German ships fire at you, both teams would be sunk from just them alone.
What are these convoys? Well since the devs only ever made one preset, they’re a collection of ten German ships:
• three Torpedo Boat T22
• one cruiser Emden
• one cruiser Admiral Hipper
• five merchant ship Goldenfels
Forget the last vessel for now but the rest are covered in 10.5 cm cannons, 15 cm cannons & 20 cm cannons all that can reach about 13000 metres & since Norway is a short map those are both within range of the small & medium size vessel spawns & the convoys themselves.
Landmass is your only protection from them yet you spawn in the open & it matters little what size vessel you’re as they’ll pummel the spawns with volume of fire & incredible AI accuracy.
Suggestion, remove whatever change they did two updates ago, for it was around 2.49 that accuracy went from piss weak to sub 7.7 BR airfield AA accuracy.
Niche, Goldenfels could be a lot worse if the devs made it the Auxiliary Merchant cruiser Atlantis, basically mini Emden’s in firepower. Historically the Goldenfels was converted into the merchant cruiser & named Atlantis.
Turm 3 sits at the same br as the leo 1 while having a stab, 30mm, better gun depression, and faster. All for slightly less armor. Meanwhile you have things like the IKV 91 sitting at the same br that has the same durability and none of the perks.
PZ2000. by far the best of the artillery. LRF negates most of your biggest problems and 5s reload puts it in a class shared by very few vehicles at this br range. It can put 2 shells in the air before a person can react in a lot of situations. LRFs really shouldn’t exist at 8.0. I know a few other arty have them, but the PLZ05 has a 7.5s reload, glacial rotation, and an even larger profile.
OBJ 279 is just obvious. Essentially better in every way to a Chieftan mk10 that now sits at 9.3. Largely fictional (autoloader was never tested) and the speed is incredibly generous. Driving two sets of tracks has essentially no performance hit, as the vehicle paces other heavy mbts with similar P/W ratios.
