Wasnt the mbt 80 a completely different project
We NEED this! more unique fighters yes please!
Yes, 👍
I’m a fan of Cold War vehicles and I love playing Cold War vehicles from every tech tree. I have played nearly 10,000 games in the Cold War environment. I really like the land combat mode of the game. Because the game between tanks, aircraft and anti-aircraft guns has always been interesting. However, since NATO countries can only possess F84G, many countries now have lightweight and reliable attack aircraft. The Soviet CAS tree has never been updated. And it got pretty much the worst anti-aircraft gun. I think this took a toll on the gaming experience for Soviet players. I’ve seen a lot of games where players left the game in large numbers because Shilka couldn’t dislodge helicopters or attack planes. I think the game needs to slow down and fill in the gaps caused by the expansion of the tech tree. At least Cold War Soviet players should get a cool attack aircraft. I believe this will be IL-40 or IL-102,Because the efficiency of Soviet anti-aircraft artillery is very low, its offensive capabilities should be enhanced. The current combat effectiveness of the Mi-24 is obviously not as good as that of Western helicopters.I think it’s time to rethink the Cold War CAS environment.
Shir 2 was never the export version of MBT-80.
Shir 2 to put it simply, was a project to up armor the older British MBT i.e Chieftain for foreign use i.e Iran … whilst UK would move on to the much more capable new MBT design i.e MBT-80.
Since, Iran was not getting the Shir-2 and combined with delays in MBT-80, UK Gov, MoD repurposed those Shir 2 into Challengers with few more mods.
that’s kinda true
Love 'em both!
But too bad … Gaijin ignores them and only appeases the end-tier whiners
‘Armed to the teeth’ is a stretch for the il40
French firm GIAT’s once proposal during 80s to sell the AMX-32-120mm to US for use by the US Army’s RDF (Rapid Deployment Force).
The AMX-32 with its 120mm cannon is similar weight to the current M10 Booker fulfilling the MPF role (Mobile Protected Firepower).
MiG-AT
Väinämöinen (“Vyborg”) for the USSR.
Finnish Heavy Cruiser bought from Finland in 1947, served full-time in the Soviet Navy until 1953.
Well, ‘literally’ MBT-80’s export version, not direct. But still, it’s not derivation of Chieftain.
When designing FV4211, MVEE desgined entirely new kind of hull what later to be called ‘MVEE hull’, which is constructed with welding, rather than welding hull of existing Chieftain. This becomes standard hull of later British mbt hull designs, and even nowadays Challenger 3 on development is based on ‘MVEE hull’.
Now, let’s turn the sight to Shir 2. Shir 2 project was under development just after MBT-80 programme started, and used ATR-1 prototype of MBT-80 as it’s design base. The major difference with Shir 2 and MBT-80 ATR-1 is that, Shir 2 used rather stable design of ‘all steel hull’, while MBT-80 ATR makes front hull with steel and rear hull with aluminum alloy, which makes problem that eventually lead to cancellation of project.
So, while Shir 1 is an upgraded Chieftain, Shir 2 is not something to be called ‘upgraded Chieftain’. It’s just proto-Challenger 1, or the only survived derivative of MBT-80.
I don’t think it’s a problem if it’s armed to the teeth. Its overall design is very similar to the A-10. It has very powerful forward firepower, although it doesn’t carry many bombs. But it’s very effective at disrupting enemies.
can we at least have a custom/event skin for normal tiger? I think that would still be pretty cool.
also PL-01 when?
Agree it was somewhat new-ish but it was not entirely ‘new’. It used Chieftain hull design as basis and was constructed of aluminum. But it was more evolutionary than Chally-1.
Project codename was “Almagest”. Cancelled in 1972 (When UK joined Germany for next MBT, before cancelling even that and start MBT-80 project).
Why Aluminum? Coz the first idea was to mount the new Burlington armor (later Chobham) onto Chieftains. But the weight crossed 60+ tons even before 1970s. So, the Aluminum base was chosen hence, “Aluminum Chieftain”, aka Chieftain Mk. 5/2, receiving designation FV 4211.
But why abandon Aluminum for Shir-2/Chally-1? Coz Iran was concerned of stress/cracking of aluminum hull and wanted steel + Burlington*****. And required a more powerful engine to offset the increased weight. Hence Iran insisted on the 1200hp CV12.
MBT-80 was planned as wholly new tank, not a Chieftain derivative nor any link to it.
But during the program various Chieftain-based test platforms were used.
(i.e just trying to conclude here, the MBT-80 test hulls were related to Chieftains/Shir but were not to be the final design of MBT-80. MBT-80 would have totally different hull and turret design. Only that MBT-80 could’ve ended-up utilizing Aluminum in its construction, as was planned, but not absolutely certain, as material science was always evolving)
Shir-1 and Shir-2 were pretty much Chieftain derivatives. Global incidents led Shir-2 to become Challenger-1 and later only the hull of Chally-2 being related to it and now Chally-3 will push with the same’ol design. Hence many British analyst and experts still support the idea of Leo 2 hulls for Chally 3. Chally 2/3 turrets are still relatively new but the hulls are nearly ancient.
*****US was not informed of Burlington being offered for Iran. They weren’t much aware of Burlington’s characteristics at the time.
Here is GM XM-1, before Chrysler, GM & XM-1 project manager’s visit to UK, 1973:
and after the UK visit:
Both Chrysler and GM made number of changes to the armor layout after the UK visit and understanding Burlington armor there. GM had to make more changes than Chrysler.
F/A-18A this march update :))
Would be exceptionally awful at it’s job but it looks badass so let’s do it.
Gripen E, Gaijin please I beg of you.
Only if they can actually get it correct, considering the Gripen C’s are still pages beyond pages of broken despite bug reports with gaijin simply stating they have no interest in accuracy.
So ill wait for the Gripen NG and see if they can fix that before adding the next beyond fictional aircraft thats held back to fit gaijins year old meta.
gripen E pribabaly when japan gets the f-2 and usa gets f16 block 70
