New Darwin Hill Location and Map Improvements!

Today we’re covering the Darwin Hill map, improvements to Red Desert and a visual overhaul to two air maps!

Darwin Hill for Ground Battles

In the next major update, we’re heading to the South Atlantic to the Falkland Islands! The map is based on the Darwin Hill area near the settlement of Darwin, the site of fierce clashes between British commandos and Argentine forces. The archipelago’s landscape here is distinctive, with a treeless plain biome, rugged rocky coasts and yellow thicket gorse, which is a favorite among tourists from around the world.

We’ve paid special attention to the architecture of the buildings. There is no centralized water supply in the Falklands; instead, rainwater collection tanks and cisterns can be seen at every house. The buildings are predominantly single-story, and due to the harsh climate, almost every farm has its own greenhouses and fenced enclosures for poultry and livestock. For centuries, local residents have relied on the sea as well as livestock farming for their livelihood, so the bays and inlets are densely dotted with piers, fishing boats, and small yachts.

There are a few Easter eggs on the map! You’ll find stylized, homemade posters created by the locals, reimagined to fit the War Thunder universe.

Welcome to the edge of the world! The South Atlantic winds are waiting for your tanks and aircraft.

Improvements to Red Desert

We’re continuing to work on map balance, and this time we’ve made changes to Red Desert. The main issue was that a large portion of the map was exposed to fire from elevated areas. We’ve significantly toned down these positions, all while preserving the concept of high-ground firefights while eliminating their overwhelming dominance. We also lowered the terrain elevation around the spawn points to better shield vehicles from fire shortly after spawning.

OLD

We’ve paid special attention to the A point area in the Domination mode. The high-ground positions surrounding it have been leveled out, and the point itself is now situated in a spacious natural depression. This transforms the battle for the center into intense, thrilling close-quarters combat, giving players a better chance to seize the initiative without the constant fear of being shot from across the map. We look forward to seeing you on the revamped Red Desert map!

Improvements to Air Locations

We’ve not forgotten about pilots either! While we work on a major update to the core rendering technology for air maps, we’re continuing to revamp the visuals of older locations. In the upcoming major update, we’ll introduce completely overhauled versions of the Falkland Islands and Afghanistan maps. We’ve primarily enhanced terrain detail; for the Falklands, we also utilized a more accurate heightmap from the new ground-vehicle version of the map, resulting in much more natural and varied terrain. All surface textures have been completely reworked using real satellite imagery, making the landscape look far more lifelike and authentic.

As for the map’s content, we’ve added a host of new assets to bring the desert expanses to life. You’ll now encounter distinctive suburban structures, kilns, and clay pits, all of which lend the location a unique character and better capture the region’s atmosphere.

That’s all for now! Stay tuned to the news about the upcoming major update, as there’s plenty of exciting stuff ahead!

STOP RUINING MAPS

Red desert is one of the last few maps where you can actually snipe in, making it flat defeats the whole purpose of the map

When we say we want bigger maps we do NOT mean maps that we have to drive for 5 minutes to get to action, we want maps where you can engage at longer ranges without having to drive across the whole map

Old sands of Tunisia was one of the most enjoyable high tier maps in the game. It offered long range sniping (spawn to spawn, dune to dune, etc), decent amount of cover with the dunes, a fun flanking route with medium and close quarters combat (big bridge) and actually allowed top tier MBTs and SPIKE carriers to get used like they were designed.

The long range meant that SPIKE missiles could actually hit their targets, however their long flight time allowed aware enemies to get into cover or smoke in time.

Smaller maps remove any form of skill and just turn into whoever has the best gun handling and armor wins.

Good to see that the lack of any spot for SPAA to sit at without extremely long sightlines against tanks, making playing SPAA basically impossible, isn’t being addressed either

We will ever see this map in Sim battles and get the actual size of the islands and not just scaled down version?

Does the falklands air map rework also make it closer to its correct size?

Its only about 50% the size it should be

personally I never minded the strong presence of long rangeness on red desert considering its like the only map with that range possible, some work around the spawns and objective locations I understand but those previews just look a bit too flat

will have to see how it works but I do hope gaijin will listen to feedback about more than just strong spots as they did for white rock fortress and ash river

This is great. Air maps are in desperate need of some fixing and detailing. Hopefully you continue with this in the future.

Regarding the Falklands air map hopefully we see an accurately scaled version since maps of that size are now possible with the introduction of Tropical Coast and Nuclear Thunder.

We’re stocking our ships full of British beer and bullets with this update.

You’re forgetting about one group of pilots: simulation pilots. Apart from the changes to anti-aircraft defense, there haven’t been any significant updates in a long time.

ayyo who drove road rollers on red desert its all flat now

Yet another victim of the infamous steamroller. Soon every map in the game will be a close quarters brawling ground with no room for long range engagements and no verticality higher than a curb in the road.

What is the point of new shiny vehicles if every map you play them on plays exactly the same?

Another map ruined

Keep up the good work

Thank Neptune they forgot about seafarers this time, just tankers & aviators getting their good maps ruined under the guise of “improvements” by the devs…

Still a new GF map looks nice yet, I wonder how it plays & ntm how long until it’s “improvemented” due to not playing how the devs want.

The Goose Green isthmus is 5 x 2.8 km, I don’t think it needs to be scaled down if its going to be for higher B.Rs (8.7 and above)

darwin hill looks nice though, the colours work and look good, and the rocky outcrops will be nice

I am talking about air Sim, were the already existing Falklands isn’t available and the map is scaled down, so I am waiting for the 1-1 scale map (around 256x256km) for Sim

Ohhh I see
My bad

Yeah, no.

You’ve butchered it. We do not need every map to be a flat plane. First Tunisia, and now this. An utter joke, but you lot are catering to the attention addled over everything else now. Just look at the nuclear event.

Gaijin, plese remove all big maps, thank you

The real question no one has asked yet, will there be penguins waddling about on the map?

ah yes, no verticality on red desert?
Who in their right mind even called for that?
I mean, the devs should just remove all traction at this point. Oh and add more red zones I beg lmao
