IMPORTANT INFORMATION
-
-On Norwegian Leopard 1 carriages, the gunner did not have his own periscope, but observed through the main sight (EMES18).
-
-In addition to the EMES-18, the shooter also had a TZF spare sight that magnified 8x. This sight was mounted parallel to the cannon.
-
-Ammunition capacity was 55 shells, of which 13 were stored in the “ready row” in the tower. (In reality, the ammo capacity was only 52 regular shells, as 3 of the holders in the hull only fit the outdated APDS ammunition.).
-
-One ammunition box supplies the coaxial machinegun with 1000 rounds of .30 cal ammunition. The turret mounted machineguns have ammunition crates eith 4250 rounds of ammunition stored in turret and hull.

-The main sight had 12x magnification, and the main sight consisted of an optical sight for use during the day, and a thermal sight for use in the dark. The thermal sight could also be adjusted between 4x and 12x magnification. The main sight also contained a laser rangefinder that could measure distances with an accuracy of 10 meters out to 10,000mdd.
HISTORY
The Leopard was developed on the basis of experiences from World War 2 and experiences gained in the post-war period. The wagon was developed in the late 1950s/early 60s, the first ones then entered German service in 1965 and have since been Germany’s standard tank. It has also undergone a number of upgrades over the years and has now come in yet another new and improved edition. Leopard 1 has been in use in a number of countries around the world, including Australia and Canada. Today, Leopard 1 is on its way out of the installations of quite a few countries, which has meant that a number of new user countries have also come up, there are countries such as Brazil and Chile.
1A5NO & 1A5NO2
In 1989 it was decided to upgrade all 78 Norwegian Leopards with a new fire control system and an overhaul of the hulls. Tandum Tekniske Verksted overhauled the hulls and some components for the towers. A number of small modifications were made to the hulls, including new hydraulic buffers. This improved the suspension properties of the wagons. The towers were sent to Wegmann in Germany for upgrading
The Norwegian wagons were equipped with an electric straightening system, which then got rid of the hydraulics in the tower. This was a good choice, which has saved the defense a lot of expensive maintenance. Norway is alone in using this on the Leopard 1A5
The wagons were reassembled at Tandum Tekniske Verksted and the entire system tested. Around 1992, 92 used Leopard 1 A1A4s were purchased from Germany, 33 of which were modified to A5 standard. These carriages differ in that they have additional armor on the turret, they were therefore designated LEOPARD 1 A5NO2
These upgrades were largely completed in 1995. It has been decided that the Army will take the 1A5 out of service, only a small number would be retained for training use
One of the two machineguns used on this tank, was mounted outside on the turret and on the pintle mount on the left hatch. this was because in a combat situation the commander played a too important role analyzing the field and telling the crew what to so, and all the other tasks, wich the commander is responsible of. and to have to control a machinegun as well was not optimal for the commander

NITROGEN BASED FIRE EXTINGUISHER SYSTEM

Nitrogen fire suppression systems use pure Nitrogen, which is a naturally occurring gas present in the atmosphere. It is safe for use in occupied spaces and poses no threat to the environment. The Nitrogen works as a fire suppressant by reducing the oxygen level within a room to a point at which the fire will extinguish, without compromising the safety of individuals present in the room. Nitrogen will not decompose or produce any by-products when exposed to a flame.
this is therefore an effective and safe fire extinguisher, ecpecially for the safety of the tank crew

HISTORY
This is a Norwegian invention (should be) and was developed in the late 1980s at the FFI-Forsvarets forskningsinstitutt (FFI- Forsvarets forskningsinstitutt)
This was developed for all Leopard 1 hulls, and was fitted to the then Leopard 1A5NO, the upgraded Leopard 1A5NO2 and possibly the Leopard 1A1NO.
As we know, the Leopard 1 has a very visible thermal signature, and this bleu was developed to reduce precisely this. it was mounted above the outlet of the exhaust on both sides of the engine, the function is such that you lead the hot exhaust away from the motorcycle and the carriage. something similar was mounted above the heater as well, because it was also quite hot (unfortunately, I don’t know exactly where on the wagon this is).
This could also serve as additonal protection aginst HE shells and such

Here is a Ingenørpanservogn NM189 with the bulges mounted! part of the reason you won’t see may pictures with those mounted, was that they were really easy to rip off when driving in terrains and small forests. you can see the left bulge has been damaged a bit here

The NM60 cartridge was put into production after the AG3 was chosen in Norway. The first Norwegian LOT was 18-RA-67. The cartridge was in continuous production until LOT 12-RA-01 was delivered in 2001. Production was then moved to Vanäverken in Karlsborg in Sweden in connection with Raufoss Ammunitionsfabrikker becoming part of NAMMO
