Last stand of Air Realistic Battles

It’s almost as if that’s their job as game developers.

But oh no think of poor Gaijin. They only released 2 copy paste premium Hornets and one cash grab squadron F-16 in the last two updates. And they only broke major systems twice this year.

I cannot thank you enough @themadseventeen for specifically including poll questions on “requiring nonfighters to win” and “is the existence of fighters winning rounds by themselves a good thing?”

This, above all else, is why gameplay of everything but meta fighters has been allowed to rot. Nothing other than a fighter was needed. Since fighters were most efficient at winning rounds via TDM, soon people flying non-TDM-oriented planes became seen as “flotsam filling up fighter slots.”

No single objective should be able to win a match by itself. Instead, it should be a “best 2 of 3” sort.

As different factions in the community have different preferences with what they each think should be most important to victory (with associated valid arguments in most of them, except any and all about “skill”), the only way to truly balance the plane classes and to encourage intelligent objective design in all three main areas is to take away the possibility of winning rounds from each individual one. This forces the disparate classes to work together, whether certain self-centered diehard fighter mains look down on nonfighter users or not.

How about to address the clear and obvious issue here, instead of making Air RB one spawn, why not instead make it one death?

Then, if you get in a situation where you took a fighter, the enemy team has been blown to bits, and the match is still going because tickets still aren’t in your favor, and you can then go land on the nearest airfield to grab a good attacker you brought in your lineup?

Thus you still get the variety which lineups could bring without the multiple respawns as a lame excuse by snail to gut rewards.

For me nimbal would be someone i would ask for changes in ARB.

The reason being is the fact he is a SIM player so he could give more feedback over the assumption of a posible ARB EC comeback

Whilst i do agree that the Starfighter update in March 2020 (with the Introduction of the F-4E) was the beginning of the decline, the following developments like respawning bases (May 2020) were together with the massive player increase and the large expansion of TTs with Mach 2 jets the main reason for this mess.

That gaijin is, was and will be unable or unwilling to implement dynamic hp for bases and airfields is not the fault of the players. Currently there is zero incentive for experienced pilots to use a bomber in Air RB.

But - what most players forget - without bombers there is at least for the main portion of most tech trees also no need for fighters from an immersion pov.

I had similar thoughts a long time ago:

But the responses are rather disappointing.

Can you make it 4 and add working guns? Gaijin forgot.

I like the suggestion of experienced player input for balancing, but this will always have MAJOR issues:

CCs - doesn’t necessarily mean they are good or knowledgable players

Polling highly discussed vehicles in the BR change thread - much of the community has extreme bias, usually nation related which can completely throw off the balance.

Player statistics (current) - newer, inherently worse and inexperienced players are attracted to 3 nations: USA, Germany, USSR. Naturally these 3 get lower statistics because the players are worse. As they do not know what is good or bad they disproportionately deflate the performance of those vehicles.

Player statistics (best [insert # of players] on an air rb leaderboard, preferably kills per spawn) - Ignore the “PvP Rating” as it means nothing of course. The good side of this is you have consistently experienced and knowledgable players influencing the stats as opposed to new players. However the sample size will be extremely limited to the point of making it impossible to balance some vehicles.

The BR system as a whole is awfully done as a balancing system, and all the methods to fix its drawbacks come with something nearly as bad as a drawback in return. “Advisory” positions should probably be expanded to more than content creators though, highly in part because CCs can use their channel to gain leverage on their opinions.

People spend $15 a month? Wild.
I’ve spent $3.34 a month for the past few years now.

There’s constant bug fixing.
Uptiers are entirely random, and I prefer them as there’s less pressure on me as a player.
This game features the greats of the PVP game modes featured in PVP games everywhere.

Rewards with premium are among the best for the live service genre.

There are issues with the game, but I don’t need to invent issues when I can just discuss the actual issues.
That and the competition’s worse. Claiming there’s no competition is the same as saying the competition’s worse but ignoring their existence.

The Issue of Decompression

As a person who played high tier Air RB very frequently before Seek and Destroy, but only occasionally now, I would like to give my 2 cents.

Air RB does need major changes, and I hope that Gaijin realizes this need. However, many of the changes suggested in this post would be more damaging than no change at all. I have many points of contention with the topic post, but in this post I will address the topic of decompression.

This topic is a longstanding point of misjudgement by most of the community. While BR Decompression is needed, most players vastly overestimate the amount of decompression which would be best for War Thunder and it’s players. This is because of the widespread, mistaken belief that more BR decompression is always better.

This is not true due to a variety of reasons. Firstly, the most prominent issue, queue times, is not vague or distant, but an overarching danger for WT. Currently, queue times are tolerable expressly because Gaijin keeps BRs reasonably compressed. I believe that a max BR of 16.0, as is currently the majority in the poll, would not only be illogical, but would be damaging to the future of War Thunder.

But why not decompress dramatically?

BR Systems Logic

No other game has so many matchmaking brackets as War Thunder. War Thunder matches are divided by multiple modes, 4 servers, and tens of BRs for each mode (in Air RB, this is 40 BRs).

This multiplies queue times. The majority of players play the most popular modes, on popular servers (NA), and at the most popular BRs. Therefore, the prevalence of long queue times is understated in community discourse, whether on WT forums or other social media.

The truth is, even in Air RB, there are sometimes queue times of multiple minutes; these occur on less popular servers, at less popular BRs, and at less popular hours of the day. 3-5 minute queue times are not unheard of. Additionally, queue times as a function of players do not increase linearly, they increase EXPONENTIALLY. This is because more and more players will leave the queue the longer it is. Let me remind you that the amount of WT players has been stable, but not growing quickly, over the past year. More BR brackets means spreading players more thin.

Compression is not completely bad, just as decompression is not always good. Compressed BRs allow War Thunder matches to be more diverse. Fighting superior enemies at times and winning gives a higher sense of accomplishment. As any WT veteran would know, much of the potential for balance given by the current BR ceiling is actually wasted from Gaijin’s poor balancing within the BRs, not the compression itself!

Taking all this into account, the specific max BR for decompression should be reasonable. At this current time, 15.0 would be optimal.

I only put yes for the CC thing because I only know one CC that cares enough to call out some of gaijins bs. I think it was the hornets sting update when Bo time gaming pointed out some of the really big issues with the game.

Queue times are a non-issue man. War Thunder is consistently in the top 10 most played games on steam, not including the people playing purely off the launcher. I get instant matches all the time. People can wait. The queue times in normal matchmaking on WT range from instantaneous to a few minutes max, literally capped at 7 minutes, because it just gives you a mixed battle. The only time I have ever had to wait that long was because of a weird mix of nations in my squad. And I play a wide range of BR, this has always been my experience. On the other hand, I’ll use CS as an example as used in the post. Same gamemode, 25 years, but queue times range from a 10 seconds to 20+ minutes. And yet, look where it’s at. Queue times are a non issue, people only complain about longer queue times because it is longer than they are used to, once you get used to the queue time for a mission that is more balance, and has more content, better gameplay overall, people will be fine.

CCs already get plenty of say with their reach alone (telling people what’s good/bad, what they like/dont like, how they should vote on polls (aphe change for example), etc), they absolutely do not need to be given more say in the game, especially since, with all due respect, most of them aren’t very smart or good at the game and every single one has ulterior motives.

I am not against this idea at all. I am now wondering why it’s not in the game right now. If we can swap loadouts on the AF it would make sense we could also swap crews/planes.

However I think that “longer and more complex missions” would benefit a lot from having respawns.

I don’t know what kind of respawn mechanic would work best. It could be unrestricted (in terms of when and where) like in sim, or it could be some kind of wave mechanic. I am not sure.

I really like the structure and how the OP tackles the issue, but I don’t see gaijin doing anything until money is involved. They would love to see this game gradually fall off until death so they can release some surprise megafix update to bring everybody back, years after they’ve milked us dry for our cash, just so they can do it again.

Good idea, i second that.

i dont like the idea of longer matches. an RB EC mode would be perfect for this instead of taking away quick matches you dont need to set aside much time for. both have a place in the game

honestly im fine with how it is now, you are assigned to the aircraft of your choosing for the match with one life and if you really want to you can change loadouts at the airfield
