HUD indicator for currently selected weapon is almost impossible to use

@k_stepanovich

HUD indicator for currently selected weapon is almost impossible to use.

The only way you can tell which weapon is currently selected is finding a small slash “/” character amidst a wall of text. (And then you have to move your eye again to read the name written in front of it, while making sure your eyes stay at the same line and don’t read the names on the lines above or below it)

This is completely unpractical and unnecessary.

There is no need for the HUD to remind what weapon types you got into the match with you (you already selected them and are aware of what you took into the match when you spawned).
And if you want to know what weapon models you have left, the current HUD doesn’t tell you that anyways, as it only shows one model/name in front of each type of weapon (for example it only shows AIM-120B even if you have AIM-120B and AIM-9M).

Solution: Just show the name of the weapon that is currently selected and hide the names of the other weapons.

How it should look like

This makes it possible to actually know what weapon you have currently selected by taking a glance at the HUD (which is what the HUD is for). Instead of trying to read a wall of text fishing for a small slash “/” character. (And then you have to move your eye again to read the name written in front of it, while making sure your eyes stay at the same line and don’t read the names on the lines above or below it)

I made a bug report here: https://community.gaijin.net/issues/p/warthunder/i/KdYmZ0mcM1Cz

Which I expect them to mark as:

Not a bug, the developers intended to make the interface as user-unfriendly and painful to use as possible.

But I had to try …

There is a character ‘>’ and the entire name of the selected weapon. It is very easy to use.

Now, if you find this hard to see, it’s probably hard for you to see anything else on the HUD either. Speed, number of weapons, engine temps, everything. This is a problem with your HUD scale setting or eyesight, not with the design of the HUD.

I think you didn’t understand (or you simply haven’t yet played with aircrafts carrying many different secondary weapons at the same time)

The issue is not that the name of the selected weapon is not shown

The issue is that the name of unselected weapons are also shown

And it’s not like you have a list of all weapons and a character next to the selected one either
But rather you have a list of weapon types (AAM/AGM/GBU/…)

So in essence you have to find a single character in a wall of text, then read the name that is currently shown on the same line

Or we could have a sane interface that only shows the name of the selected weapon …

The name doesnt matter, you see what is selected by the > char next to it on left. Its perfectly fine even on multirole loadout.

Good! I like to see what I got available in the heat of battle…

Do you actually use the weapon selector function/command, or use the method where you press one command for bombs, another for rockets, etc.?

I have never had any issues with weapon selector in game even with multiple weapons of different types on my aircraft I would recommend rebinding your key binds that work better with you style of play if you’re using default key binds.

No you don’t

The character is shown next to the weapon type, not model

For example next to “AAM”

But AAM could be AIM-9M or AIM-120A
Or R-73 / R-27ET / R-27ER / R-77-1

So you have to first find the line with the character, then read the name of the weapon

Whereas they could directly only show the name of the selected weapon …

Yes
Because you are using an unrepresentative example
Many aircrafts carry multiple types of AAMs and AGMs etc

For example the screenshot I gave you is with F-15E with AIM-120B, AIM-9M, AGM-65D, AGM-130A and GBU-39

And the same applies to many other aircrafts

And here you have AGM,GBU,AAM and dumb rockets. So 4 different categories.

Yes, so if you got 2x AIM-9M and 1x AIM-120A, and it will show thusly:

⊳ AAM AIM-9M 2/3

OR

⊳ AAM AIM-120A 1/3

, depending on what you selected.

Well, you actually can’t

Because for example if you have AIM-120B and AIM-9M left, it only shows AIM-120B, unless you actually select the AIM-9M

So it doesn’t even tell you what you have left … There’s basically no point in having it …

It’s not about category
It’s about multiple models for each category

AGM: AGM-113A and AGM-65D
AAM: AIM-120B and AIM-9M
GBU: GBU-39 (And you could potentially carry other GBU types simultaneously as well, but I usually don’t)

But I know that I got both 9M’s and 120A’s, so AIM-9M 2/1 tells me perfectly well I got 2 Sidewinders and 1 AMRAAM!

I dunno, I’ve flown a lot of types with multiple weapons types of multiple store categories all the time, but never had any issue about exactly knowing what I got selected and left. Maybe could be a problem if at the same time you bring 3 different bombs or missiles, which is quite unusual in my experience…

No it does NOT tell you that …

Can you see the AIM-9M here? no you don’t
All you see is “4 AIM-120B”

You have to select either AIM-120B or AIM-9M for it to actually show you that you have two AAM types left.

image

So the current system is completely pointless, because if they remove the name of unselected weapons, you could still see you have two types of AAMs left when you select an AAM, just like you can do now …

I mean that’s not true at all for example planes like the F18 and Eurofighter’s etc have MFD pages that show the weapons on each pylon and what is selected. Also you can always look at your aircraft and see what you got attached if need be.

I’m not talking about what I have attached

This is about what weapon is selected (through the weapon selector)

seems like it
