How are they actually going to balance the F-117

I’m not talking close range, I’m only talking about ground RB vs SPAA.

Yes, any jet with a basic missile should be able to close with and kill it

So… close range…

FlaRakPz 1 and other 10.3 and higher SPAA don’t need a lock to launch their missiles they can just spot the F-117 in the sky and launch a missile towards it

Going by purely A2G loadout then its essnetially the same as the Jaguar GR1A which is at 10.3

Considering its slower and more vulnerable to air attacks and has less overall A2G I was thinking maybe 10.0, but at the same time I wouldnt want it lower than 10.3. (though does have 2k GBUs which could be very good)

Given aircraft like the Jaguar GR1A has 60 flares and 216 large calibre chaff, it is arguably as effective at dealing with CAS as the F-117 will be, but can also climb and evade better.

So its tough. The question will be the IR reduction stuff, but honestly… Unless its a precursor to an IR overhaul, the F-117 probably will be no harder to lock onto than a drone or non-Reheat jet.

Heck look at the Harrier, should be really hard to lock onto with an IR Missile, but is one of the easiest in game by far

First a bit of reality…

  1. The F-117 is designated as a fighter-bomber
  2. He always worked, as far as is known and according to declassified records, as a bomber for precision bombing - suppression of enemy air defenses…

… and now some strange thoughts…

  • why, if it is essentially an attack aircraft for penetrating the enemy’s anti-aircraft defense, is it not designated A-117 (or F/A-117), but is designated as F-Fighter?
  • have all his abilities really been revealed?
  • by keeping a lot of things secret, the Gaijin devs have a lot of room for … creative thinking and they know that the players, Nighthawk, want … ?

For a long time I have been following speculations about whether he would be able to carry an aerial guided missile…?
I am attaching some links, maybe they are not relevant at all, but who knows…
Let me be surprised…

No, range is relative to the units in question. 8-10KM is not close range for SPAA

It’s close range for radars. This thing also isn’t doing anything 8-10km out for the most part

I always try to design my fighters with zero offensive capability in the air. USA naming sucks

If it’s modeled that way. I would agree, it may be ok at 10.3.

But, it shouldn’t be modeled that way. It should be very hard for a ground based missile to lock it up, specifically because all of the things they look for, are very hard to see.

Those BR’s SPAA’s are also over tiered which makes the problem worse because there is no parity or standoff distance. It would essentially be like a drone @11 when you get 2 free shots if the pilot isn’t a brick

Strela and Type 93 will easily still get a lock with contrast seekers

What radar SPAA’s are engaging (effectively) 8-10km at the 10-10.3 BR?

Because every day I see CAS loitering at that range firing guided or F&F munitions and retreating

in theory it should be able to use missiles with LOAL ability in its inner pylons

Not what I said. RADARS are at SHORT RANGE within 10km. The M247 is using the F-16’s radar for instance which when within 10km very well could have a chance of detecting something like the F-117 from what I know about it. I don’t imagine most people here actually know about these things to disagree with what I just said at least more than what I can do back, so we’ll see how they’re added

So a 5km missile system is supposed to counter a 10 ish KM standoff stealth aircraft?

Gee I can’t see any issue with that. Its not like that is already not working for helicopters with 8+ km munitions

Extremely weird addition to please the hype warriors

F-117 doesn’t have ~10km of range in WT unless you are toss bombing with CCRP. You’re dropping a paveway with a 6km seeker range which has to have the seeker pointed at the target in that last 6km approach, not pointed downwards or too far forwards either. You’re doing this in a low thrust/weight ratio subsonic jet. The approach would be you trying to find a guy on scope at 15km out, then locking onto him the best you can or near him, flying as fast as you can towards him then using CCRP to toss the bomb with an upwards arc hoping he is still there in like 40 seconds when the bomb has made its entire travel arc and while trying to maintain a laser lock. You could also try climbing to space but this thing has a shitty engine as it is and you will easily get jumped up there by jets or any kind of contrast seeker SAM and again, two paveways.

It has no Air to Air weapons, it’s a strike hawk.

I dunno I’ve seen some Tram’s hitting guys with Paveways while orbiting outside of anyone’s ability to counter them.

Did the Paveway seeker distance get nerfed at some point? I thought it was similar to the Maverick/Hellfire.

The ability to counter them:

(They won’t)
