Help identifying and engaging bases and ground targets

I am completely blind when it comes to finding bases and ground vehicles in sim ec matches I find it extremely difficult to identify targets and engage them properly.

Even with modern jets in top tier with cameras, pods and thermals I am having a hard time with CAS.

Could you guys give me some tips and tricks to help me with this problem? How are you guys so good at PvE?

It will depend on the aircraft you are in, but typically at higher BRs aircraft will have CCRP and most (but not all) will display your selected CCRP target in the cockpit HUD. its a bit fiddly to do. But a godsend when you get use to it.

Here is a guide for it:

Thank you for the comprehensive guide! It is very helpful.

What about identifying and engaging ground vehicles (tanks, spaa, etc)? I know ground battles are marked in the map, but I still have a hard time finding the enemies even with targeting pods.

What aircraft are you flying?

JAS39C, F16-C and AV8-B Plus

Okay. All 3 have good CCRP interfaces and thermal Tpods.

It should be fairly simple to see battlefields within a thermal tpod, and the tanks shell fire is fairly visible from the air. If you are having issue just pointing your tpod at the right bit of ground then you can use “activate target point” and it will snap your targetting pod to that bit of ground (targetting pods will fixate on your selected CCRP target)

If you also have the laser active in the Tpod, you should be able to clearly see a marker in the HUD as to where the target is located (might even appear in the Gripens HMD)

This may aid you in finding the targets. After that,. Its just pure practice. Learning to look out of the aircraft and spot things whilst flying it is just a skill you learn through practice and determination.

You could also try playing lower BR aircraft that are slower, like the A-10. That might give you the practice needed in much faster aircraft.

As I actually have the Gripen. Here’s a quick demo of what a GBU run would roughly look like in Sim (though I would never sit at this height at that BR and instead would come in low and fast or just AGMs and not GBUs)

If I remember, I’ll take a lower BR aircraft into sim tomorrow (like the Jaguar/Tornado) and show how I would engage a battlefield with GBUs in an actual match.

You can use the map for identifying AI ground targets. If you see tanks shooting towards the friendly side of the map then those tanks are surely enemy tanks.

Practice makes perfect.

Also if in cockpit and not pod view try to spot targets from far away or when going straight in direction where you expect enemies. Then as you leaving area (this will also let you know how close/far you were with bombs and you can then decide on next target)

Spotting at closer range when going sideways is much more difficult due to movement. Because ground moves underneath you. Spotting from far away while moveing sideways is easier because parallax is reduced.

Quick video of what an attack run looks like for me in the Harrier Gr7. Rather rusty so did miss one AGM-65G and my first GBU (I pulled back to hard to evade the SPAA and pushed the target out of the tpods sight so GBU missed)

But you can clearly see the tracers that I used to locate the targets (note should be a lot easier for the aircraft you mentioned as they have Gen 2 Tpods and the Harrier Gr7 is stuck with a Gen 1)

For low tiers, which you don’t have CCRP, maybe it’s helpful to play some Realistic Battles first and recognize how bases look like. In SIM, firstly fly near the base(look at the map) and identify the base by the terrain on the ground. It will be much easier if you have a bomber with the free look (F6)

Thank you!
