Since the Tusk Force update, helicopters feel much more oppressive than before. With Russia, China, and the United States now having access to extremely powerful IR guided ATGMs paired with DIRCM, it feels like counterplay is almost non-existent.
Most of the time, enemy helicopters can hover 7 to 8 kilometers away and pick off tanks with little to no risk. My team’s SPAAs often cannot reach them effectively, and it does not feel like the helicopter pilots are putting in much effort. They can safely hover and point and click with IR ATGMs.
For me personally, it is rare to get destroyed by enemy tanks anymore. Around 80 percent of my deaths are from AGM-179s, LMURs, or CMs. What is frustrating is that these new missiles do not even need to be manually guided. Helicopters can fire and retreat to cover, while players on nations without equivalent tech, such as Japan, still have to manually guide their missiles and lack DIRCM defenses. The AH-64DJP for example does not even come close to the capability of its peers.
Before this patch, I at least had fair ATGM duels with enemy helicopters. Outmaneuvering guided missiles required effort and skill, and it felt rewarding. Now, dodging only delays the inevitable because the IR missiles just do all the work.
At the moment, it feels less like tank battles with occasional CAS involvement and more like whoever spawns a helicopter first with IR ATGMs wins. I know some will say “git gud,” but that does not apply when you get destroyed in spawn before you even reach the battlefield.
Edit:
I also want to provide an example as to why this is not okay, unfortunately I didn’t get to screenshot it, but a player spawned a 2S38, got 2 assists, died, spawned the 28NM with LMURs and got 13 kills out of that game. I am sorry, but there is no way, that this is okay???
