Gripen E near impossible to use in Air Realistic

Let alone if/when BOL gets fixed. 4x BOL gives it an excellent defensive suite normally

With the introduction of IIR as SAMs, the argument for it to be actually fixed has only gotten stronger. If they are added to aircraft… there is absolutely 0 excuse for it anymore

I mean yeah but there’s a ton of things that have zero excuse to not be fixed and are still broken, again just look at the Harriers

Yeah…

I have had a 2 kill game and a 1 kill game with the Gripen E, rest are 0 kill games.

You mean the missiles they probably won’t give the E as an excuse to not uptier it?

Lmao
Genuinely possible

Not to be an ass…but if I start watching your server replays, you’re saying this is a 100% Gripen problem and you’re doing everything right?

Update: Good Sir, I have watched “a” replay…this is NOT a Gripen problem or a AIM120 problem, I will leave it at that.

Heck DM me in game and I’ll run my E with ya…well cook em well done ;)

f16i:hello?

i mean, idk if they are underperforming as i dont know their real world capabilities vs WT but them underperforming does not mean that they are useless. If you fail to get more than 3 kills from 100 launches that more shows that in the most simple words youre incompetent.

When you fire them, what distance are you firing from, what speed are you releasing them from, are you continuing to give them further updates via DL (important!) so that incase of a notch the missile can still use your radar as a backup, which enemies are you firing them at. Etc. etc.

I think ive written here before as well as probably others have too that the 120C5s are trash and generally not worth using. the difference between them is only noticable if you fire them at like 40+ km enemies, with the performance over Rb99 only minimally improving past 20km. They are however completely useless once the match progresses to closer range combat so again, just ignore 120C5s and stick with Rb99s.

if they miss 90% of the time (youd have more kills than 3) then either you fired them with insufficient speed, or at target that was too far/flying defensive, or you didnt give them DL updates, or it was too offbore, or combination of the above.
This entire notion of amraams being bad because “underperforming” is cope.

Fly fast (M1.2+) at mid-high altitude (6-7km) and fire at targets that are flying A) towards you or at an angle towards you B) are within 25km but closer the better. When you fire your missile KEEP THE RADAR ON THEM, either by keeping a solid lock or by having the TWS be on them (by gods i hope you are using TWS).
Always try to have altitude and speed advantage against enemy planes incase you need to evade.
You shouldnt really do BVR in the gripen because while its good and can do it if it has to, theres other better planes to do BVR like typhoons or flankers.

Pick your targets carefully as well, you have NCTR so if you know “oh that theres a rafale/typhoon and they have very good FM, ill wait til i get bit closer with my amraams to chuck the Rbs at them”

If none of that works, idk then maybe playing the gripen is not for you. Go play something else rather than to cry about lowering the gripen E down to 13.7 because you cant hit a target with 7 fox3s while everyone else is telling you that the plane is pretty busted at 14.0 with its FM, CMs, AAMs and radar.

What else can you do in a Gripen exactly when you can’t get close to enemies? Die and quit the game that is the only option.

I have tried notching, 100% death there. Going low, sorry missile knows where it is. Fire 120Cs from 30kms, nope they miss, fire RB-99s at sub 10kms, nope they go to narnia. Try and get a gun kill, good luck 100 R-77-1s are upon ye. Try and use 9Ms, sorry you are already dead because everyone else’s bvr missiles work. Only option is to quit because playing the Gripen E and getting all modifications without GE is pain. At my current rp rate I would have to play well over 300 matches to get it done.

Again I’ll stay respectful but

if I can play 65 games with 74% wins 24 deaths and 90 kills…with a 7 C5/2 9M load out you can. You need to change how you are playing! (my E has all the Performance mods) but your E had a 7 120 load out in the replay soooo?

Watch this clip and get good at it, this will very much help you!!!

Again my Squad invite stands…Squad up and get in discord and we will SMOKE EM!!! Up to you though.

Unless you are at 20k ft and doing Mach 1.5, its unlikely to be worth firing at this kind of range.

The best way to know whether a shot is worth it or not is reading the radar:

Screenshot 2026-01-18 202552

On the B-Scope display (the square radar panel) on the right hand side is a set markers that will tell you all you need to know about whether or not the target is within range and its worth firing

LIne 1 is your minium range (or rMin). if the target marker is below this point, the missile will be unable to hit the target, less of a problem for more modern missiles, but well worth keeping an eye on for older ones

the Box labeled “2” is your LSZ (launch success zone) or NEZ (no escape zone) (varies for different air forces but its the same thing) A missile fired within this box is incredibly difficult to defeat kinematically, the target will be required to actively defeat the missile, even turning cold wont necessarily be enough to defeat a missile fired within the LSZ

Note, the LSZ boxes can be buggy, especially at high alt and can sometimes appear to exceed the rMax, this is impossible, so do be warned, but generally can be trusted

Line 3 is the targets current relative range on the scale, if this line is within the LSZ box or close to it, generally its a good idea to attempt to fire the missile.

Line 4 is your maximum range (or rMax), this is the maximum theoretical range of your missile, but just because the target is within range, it doesnt mean that a shot is worth while firing, only that if the targets fails to do anything, the missile should hit. Its definetly worth paying attention to this for shorter range weapons like the Aim-9M.

So to summarise, try firing the missile whilst it is within the LSZ on the B-Scope and you should have greater success hitting the target. This range display is found on most aircraft and most weapons. But LSZ box is not modeled for all weapons.

Also pay attention to what the target is doing. TWS will give you the targets heading, if its traveling towards you, then it will be harder for them to defend than if they were already in a notch and if they are turned like that, then they wont be able to fire straight away and you can safely get closer. Control the fight. If they’ve been flying back and forth, they have probably drained a lot of energy and thus a good target to fire at.

A target at a very high alt will also struggle more to get into a notch than one at sea level and I personally find control surfaces can get a little… squirelly. So a target at very high alts may struggle to defend far more than one low, so these targets are usually ones I tend to single out

As a final piece of advice, try to help the missile as much as possible, Aim-120s dont like being fired at wierd angles, so leading your shot helps massively, the game already provides a lot of help with this, aim for the circle and the missile should have the easiest time. You can also raise your nose 15-20° and loft the missile slightly which can help too.

Notching def works but flight performance is definitely one of the worst for a 14.0 vehicle basically the Tornado for the Gripens

MAW and RWR are also borked and sensor Fusion and a lot of other systems are missing the vehicle definitely imo shouldn’t have been added in this state.

Also looked like the usual “spam a metric ton of BOL chaff” issue too

Kinda yeah, MAW doesn’t do anything other than Flares which is blatantly wrong but don’t worry im sure Gaijin will fix that…

Also the 9M’s have been solid for me

Not a lot new there though, MAWS dropping the right CMs never seems to work

Ive just had nothing but issues, maybe there is some bug when they are fired at high speeds

No i mean gaijin literally didn’t implement the Gripens MAW correctly in the slightest the just gave it some basic place holder one vs the EFT’s which can distinguish the threat even though the Gripens can too.

Doubt they’ll fix it but who knows

Ah right, What is the MAWS on the Gripen E meant to be though, UV, IR or PD?

UV but its also mixed in with Arexis, saab states it can detect and counter the specific missile thats targeting the Gripen
