It’s no secret that Germany is struggling in War Thunder’s endgame. While the country still holds its own in the tank department, its naval and air forces are in a much worse position.
Naval Forces: The Lack of Real Endgame Battleships
Germany has very few options when it comes to endgame warships. The Scharnhorst, Bayern, and Sachsen are among the more powerful ships, but the Sachsen is really just part of the Bayern-class and doesn’t count as a true “endgame battleship.” It’s especially frustrating when you consider how other nations, like the USA, have access to much stronger ships. Now, Japan has even received 410mm guns, making the German fleet appear even weaker.
The question remains: when will we finally get the Tirpitz or Bismarck? These ships are some of the most iconic and formidable from World War II, but they’re still absent from the game. The lack of true, large battleships in Germany’s lineup is a major issue, one that leaves players disappointed. The upcoming introduction of submarines may address this somewhat, but it doesn’t fix the core problem in the endgame.
On the British side, the situation isn’t much better. The UK has a limited number of ships in the tree, leaving them with fewer endgame options as well. The lack of powerful warships for the British nation makes them struggle to compete at the higher tiers, where they often find themselves outgunned by the larger, more heavily armed ships of other nations.
Aircraft: Germany Falling Behind
The bigger issue, however, is that Germany is woefully behind in the air. While other nations like the USA, the Soviet Union, Japan, and Sweden field some of the best jets in the game, Germany’s top-tier jets are struggling to keep up. The Me 262, once Germany’s best jet, is now outclassed by newer jets and must face off against the likes of the Sabre and MiG-15 in uptiers – planes equipped with guided missiles and superior performance.
Germany faces a massive problem in ranks 4 and 5, as most of the German aircraft are simply outclassed and can’t compete with their opponents, who are flying much more modern jets. The Me 262, for example, was never designed to go up against the modern jets or missile-equipped planes of today’s meta, but it’s now forced to at a BR of 8.0. While it can still perform in a downtier, in a full uptier, it gets utterly destroyed, while its opponents, with missiles and better manoeuvrability, can outmatch it easily.
From rank 5.0 up to the Me 163 at rank 8.0, Germany has no truly competitive aircraft. It’s not until the Me 163 that things start to look up again. Now, I know some might say this is a “skill issue,” but I’m confident that many German pilots are facing the same issues. For example, with the CL-13 B at rank 9.0, I regularly get 6-8 kills, and I have no trouble dealing with other jets or prop planes, especially in the Spitfire F.24. However, the gap in performance is so vast that even a skilled pilot can’t do much to bridge it.
Solutions: The Eurofighter and Proper BR Adjustment
The solution is simple: give Germany the Eurofighter and aircraft at a clean 13.7 BR. The German planes, many of which suffered from the “we’re losing WWII, just cobble something together and hope it holds” design mentality, need to be moved down a BR bracket. Particularly the Ho 229, which is so underwhelming that it struggles to get more than 2 kills, even when played optimally.
It’s time to make Germany competitive again, both on the water and in the air. If we finally get the Eurofighter and properly adjust the BR of the German aircraft, we’ll be able to hold our own in the higher ranks once more. Until then, Germany remains one of the weaker nations in the endgame.
What do you think about Germany’s current situation in War Thunder? What ships and planes would you like to see added?
