Game has suddenly started with heavy freezes / stuttering

Few days ago Battleye was enabled for Linux and MacOS. I am 99.99% certain the current problem is Battleye’s fault. Huge freezes in the first 30-45 seconds of every match, until the game crashes if you play long enough. Never had such problem before.

I now cannot change my resolution to 2560x1440. Its maxed at 1920x1200. Im also locked at 60-80 fps regardless of settings, SSAA 4x. I went from 120 fps SSAA 4x 2560x1440 ultra → 80 fps on 1920x1200 no SSAA. this is unplayable.

I stumbled upon a solution to the problem by chance. I was experiencing frequent short stuttering, and in my case, adjusting the power management mode in the NVIDIA Control Panel’s 3D settings to “Prefer maximum performance” resolved the issue. This makes sense because War Thunder was only utilizing about 40-50% of my GPU’s power (RTX 4080 @ 4K, minimum settings).

According to the setting’s description:
“Choosing ‘Prefer maximum performance’ ensures that the GPU remains at its highest performance state while running 3D applications, regardless of actual GPU load. However, this may increase power consumption.”

GTX 4070? I dont think that cart exists. the same thing happenes to me tho

I think its something with the new anti-cheat. In easy AntiCheat i had no stutters

It’s more coincidence, just saying.

Did you even do any of the steps in these threads, such as clearing out the various folders, and re-doing your graphics settings, either through defaults, or through GeForce Experience optimization?

It’s Nvidia App now.

It just sets maximum settings in 4K and DLSS Balanced for my system with 4060ti

Yea, lol, I just refer to it as Experience lol ;)

I’m sure it has a slider still, I’d custom to slide it back a bit so that certain settings turn off in the preview.

That’s what I do when I set mine, just watching for the main laggy settings to switch.

After doing Wt file verification, DDU safe mode uninstall and reinstall of drivers, turning off nvidia and discord overlays… the fix for me was going into my war thunder directory, and just deleting the Cache folder. It rebuilt it and fps went back to normal and no complete 20 seconds freezes.

I think, for some, the ray tracing changes in an update corrupted the cache and it needs to be rebuilt.

Worked for me, ymmv

I reduced my heavy stuttering this way.

  1. Install Process Lasso
  2. Open up Process Lasso.
  3. Run War Thunder while keeping Process Lasso on your other screen.
  4. In Process Lasso Active Processes, set aces.exe to high priority
  5. Monitor the Actions Log. See where ProBalance begins when it starts to stutter. Most probably you have a msedgewebview2.exe running that suddenly is taking fully your system CPU usage. Set the priority to below normal.
  6. Monitor other applications and adjust accordingly.

You will have a more playable experience now.
There is some small micro stutters I find however, I am playing at 4k with high resolution quality. I reduced the quality to low for the rendering and it has nominal stuttering at 150fps on a GTX 1660ti but I do see the stutter drop me down to 30-60fps.

There are plenty of settings in Process Lasso you can adjust to see if it will improve your gaming… Just make sure your AMD or NVidia apps are set to above normal or high priority as well so they are running fast too.

Still tweaking here so it is getting better for me.

further testing with GTX 1660ti results.

NVidia Driver Settings

  • Low Latency Mode = Ultra
  • Image Scaling = 67% (2560x1440), Sharpen 100%
  • Max Frame Rate = 75 FPS (Does not seem to work with War Thunder).
  • Power Mangement Mode = NVidia Driver-controlled
  • Vertical Sync Off

In Game Settings:

  • Advanced Short = No
  • Anisotropy = 16x
  • AA Method = FXAA HQ
  • Cloud Quality in flight = Medium
  • Cloud Quality on ground = 1536
  • Display Mode = Full screen
  • Effects Resolution = LOW
  • Far Terrain Details = Yes
  • Global Illumination Quality = Low
  • Graphics API = D3d 11
  • grass range = 0.1
  • NVIDIA Reflex Low Latency = Boost
  • Particle Density = 0.290
  • Physics Quality = 20
  • Reflection Quality = Low
  • Render Resolution = 70%
  • Resolution = 3840 x 2160
  • Shadow Quality = low
  • Terrain Deformation = high
  • Terrain displacement quality = medium
  • Track Marks = Medium
  • Tree Range = 0.850
  • Upscaling mode = Native
  • Water effects and quality = Low

with these settings. It has been playable with minimal stuttering. If you do Image scaling down to 50%, it improves further.

Guess i gotta update my drivers, thanks!

The solution works. And you , my friend, are real hero.

You’re a life saver; the issue has been resolved based on this recommendation.

I was experiencing huge stutters 10 seconds or so, in game and in the hangar. In the hangar I would at least get a notification that 'Graphics Driver Hung Texture Settings Lowered" and it was a huge issue with the game as the lowered settings would create artifacts and incorrectly rendered textures and objects.

The game is running smoother than ever, I’d nearly go as far as saying it’s resulted in a 30-40 frame per second increase in performance.

Additionally it’s solved stutters that I thought were related to latency as it appeared as if there was a slight input lag at times.

Thank you very much

Every match since the update was released starts with extreme freezing events that last anywhere from 2-10 seconds and then nothing else during the match. It’s always in the very beginning of match and just about every single match

For anyone still having this issue switching from dlss to v sync seems to fixed it for me.

This should be pinned to the top!!!

I suddenly started getting “nvlddmkm event id 153 errors” no matter the drivers used, no matter the settings, the graphics driver would reset itself (which was taking around 10 seconds) every 2,5,8 minutes into the gameplay randomly. Seems removing the cache saved me. Maybe cache is not that easily corruptible, as I was playing for like over 3 years without any problems… But Gajin should look into the issue for sure!

I just removed all of the contents of cache, for me WarThunder sits in the program files, and played 4 long rounds without any problems.

THANKS!!!

Underclocking my GPU has solved this issue for me.

I have had this issue for as long as I’ve played this game, on both Windows 10/11 and Linux (Arch/Pop!_OS). Before finding the solution that worked for me, I tried almost everything in this thread without success, so if you’re still facing this issue, give this a try.

Underclock your GPU by ~50-150MHz. I have an Nvidia 2070S, and have had success using MSI Afterburner (Windows) and nvidia-settings (Linux) to underclock it by 75MHz. It doesn’t hinder performance, still getting 144+ FPS, so I’ve stuck with this solution. I’m not sure if this is a problem with my GPU, or a war thunder problem, but I’m glad I’m no longer constantly crashing/freezing.

Same for me as of writing on 25/04/2025 and have tried all the suggestions and potential fixes mentioned above this point in the thread so far. This happened only after upgrading my PC recently.
