Your first example shows exactly what the radar is capable of. F3H at 5k, enemy at 4k. F3H points it’s nose directly at him and get a lock. This will never happen at 4k while enemy is at 3k because of ground clutter. That’s why we say you are safe at 3k most of the time.
“Can’t lock below IT’S horizon” means you flying straight and enemy is below your flight path, you can’t lock him even if you see him on radar, doesn’t matter which alt. You have to point your nose at him or he has to be above you.

Compare to j35d, close(?) performing missiles that aren’t radar guided in return for being able to hit people below you or low people, but j35 is way faster and probably overall a little more manuverable

The statshark values are up to date, and you can even cross reference them with other databases and the wt missile sheet. This is accurate measurement for aim-7C performance.

Well, that’s the main issue too right? It has barely any burn time and most planes here don’t have RWR, making it hard to even see them coming to begin with.
