A large percentage of the people constantly crying about CAS are the people that are rolling their faces on the keyboard with their SPAAGs and using them wrong.
I’m also complaining about CAS.
My typical good game (I’m fairly bad at ground RB) looks like this:
Why?
Because flying planes is easier and actually relaxing.
I don’t have to look for every pixel, try to navigate a safe route through a map I don’t even know (so I have no idea where to look and where to park my tank). I just bomb.
I’ve more ground kills than air kills in most ww2 spaas. I have less than 10 air kills in crusader aa mk1 but way more ground kills
Nice straw man. If SPAA has to be far more competent than the average air player to get even a percentage of the success of an air player, the problem is with the vehicles not with the players.
You don’t need to be particularly competent to know that you’re just making noise spamming tracers at planes that are 5km away with WWII era SPAA. It’s a low bar to meet, but many still fail at this simple task. Maybe even the majority fail it.
People not knowing how to use SPAA is weird.
People learned how to dive bomb, people should be able to learn how to SPAA.
I would wager that it’s far harder to use spaa, mainly due to the 3rd dimension.
Spaa have to account for aircraft altitude, whereas tanks are guaranteed to be on the ground unless something has gone very, very wrong.
Perhaps a solution which would help is to allow all users to have the console assists when playing spaa.
The average player expects to hit a plane 2km away. Thats not realistic with most WW2 AA. 5km is just another straw man. 20mm AA, you might get a hit at 1.5km max and with a 40mm and .50 AA you are lucky to get a kill at 1km due to shell speed and lack of lethality in a single hit.
That being said, the bar for SPAA is high to get a kill. Tracking fast targets at long distances and killing them before they drop their ordinance is hard. The skill level for pilots is very low. Point at target, press space bar, crash into ground due to compression. still get kill. In most cases, the ground has a higher kill count than AA.
That also doesn’t take into account the absurd benefits given to planes that AA don’t see any of. If a 75mm AP round hits a tank engine, that engine fragments into the crew. Planes don’t generate spalling at all, so the pilot behind an engine is often invincible unless you can pen the entire engine or hit the cockpit. You will ‘kill’ the plane as they keep firing their guns at you and kill you in return. You can also direct hit pilots repeatedly with AA and they shrug it off. I had a Hampton point directly at my quad .50 the other day and i’m spamming hundreds of rounds into that cockpit and he doesn’t die until he hits the ground. And .50s are API, so those rounds should be penning and killing the pilot in just a hit or two.
It’s harder to learn 40mm SPAA, and so is 250 pound CAS.
However, I’d say learning 50 CAL and 20mm SPAA is as easy as learning 1000 or 2000 pound CAS.
Sure, 40mm is harder. Stands to reason with the lower MV and lower rate of fire.
There’s also the lack of forgiveness with spaa. You mess up your shots and you’re gonna die without a second chance, bombs are much more forgiving of mistakes.
Not a lot can really be done about that sadly.
One idea is removing the delayed fuses on ww2 era bombs. That would force planes to bomb from higher up making them far less accurate without bombing aides like CCIP or CCRP. I think it would really help and could be a decent middle ground.
That would change literally nothing and be unrealistic as well.
There is, call out for people to squad and teach them.
I generally just stay a little clear of those guys, but they end up being the best bait to a lot of fighters. Wait and bide your time until they end up going for them, and then let rip.
just play USA
no problems with CAS
we really just need to boycott the game til they remove air from ground game
CAS is a necessity imo in GRB. increase to BRs for CAS that have more ground attack capabilities and more incentive for people to use SPAA for there intended roles
Where do you guys take this info on lower MV on 40mm. It has relatively high MV (874m/s!) and it retains that velocity. Yeah German 37mm may fire a faster shell. But it will get overtaken inside 300-400m.
Soviets have some insane ballistics. But for many nations 1000m/s cannons start at 5.0+ BR with lone exception of Ystervark with 75 round mag, 0 protection (I fire at them from 1000m away with goddamn MG151/20 and still get kills) and horrible firing arc with driver’s cabin constantly getting in the way.
And even these 1000m/s 20mm will not retain the speed advantage past 300m, and will get overtaken inside 600m by 40mm.
But until 5.3 and Bosvark (oh god, but it reloads for an hour) 40mm has some of the best ballistics again outside of Soviet SPAAs.
Can we say low avg skills leads to lower AAA accuracy but only the better players got the chance for CAS and expand their advantage?
Thing is the ‘skill’ required argument is those who have been bombed, saying there is no skill for the CAS side, and that’s really dismissive.
There is an active refusal to accept the other side, at any extent because of the hate built up from being got, as well as those who intentionally stoke it.
I’ll bait them into doing this if I’m rolling the Flakpanzer 341. It’s well armored, enough to withstand most strafing. The issue though is even when I do destroy a plane, Gaijin’s lazy coding allow that player to still deploy their bombs/rockets at time.s
Depending on the country I’m playing against, I’ll probably first out with a SPAA which allows me to position myself somewhere I can ambush CAS.
The US T77E1 with it’s 6x 50’s is great for clearing the air!
Not available to normal players.
And blind-spawning SPAA with 47 pen at that BR is not a great plan unless you are super dedicated to playing SPAA and don’t feel the pain when no planes spawn for several minutes (this happens pretty often when I early spawn an SPAA :p).
I’d rather spawn a tank and then switch to a fighter or capable attacker though of course this requires me to score an assist.
