I can’t spot anything anymore either. This update broke the game for me. Spent 45 mins just trying to find an aircraft in the same zone as me in capture the zone. I play VR. Gajin please fix this asap.
Yup, I even had trouble finding the surveillance plane (Stirling) on a clear day, can’t see nearby planes til they shoot or turn hard then they disappear again unless I’m zoomed in and padlocked.
Even the testflight bot is impossible to find like this.
Thought, “might as well take one of my unflied planes for practice” and couldnt find the chaika regardless of which map I’ve been testing on (winter, mediterrean, western europe).
Good thing I took screenshots in the previous patch for the bug report. Here are two screenshots:
The first one is from the previous patch. It clearly shows two contacts. These are bots from the Polygon.
The second one is from the current patch, and the contacts are not rendered here.
Experiment idea for any two pair of players who:
- Have the capability to record matches during live gameplay (windows gamebar should mean everyone with a Windows 10 OS on PC)
- Have capability and willingness to upload to youtube
To:
- Begin recording in hangar, demonstrating crew skills & graphics settings to the camera
- Join SB EC match with partner.
- Agree upon a fixed spot on the map that is easily referenced and flown to
- Spawn in and fly towards each other in a straight line that ensures you have visibility of the partner’s flight path
- Once encountering each other, do a dogfight or just RTB. Probably doing a dogfight is preferred for potential rules reasons.
- Stop recording, upload to youtube and link us the results. Do not process video or edit or cut it together. Link partner’s.
Make sure to note weather, time of day and map of the recording.
Edit 1:
My own attempt at demonstration
Testing the conditions affecting black dot spotting/rendering as of Leiviathan Warthunder major update.

Game conditions:
Deleted Patch, compiledShaders, Cache and Verified file integrity on Steam
Future Experiment Ideas:
- Live SB EC match example with at least 2 individuals recording their flight from moment of take-off until meeting at an agreed-upon, easily referenced point of contact to demonstrate how each player sees the other throughout their straight-line flight to meet up
- Live SB EC match example, with a close range dogfight
In both scenarios, it would be ideal to vary weather, time of day, map and crew skill across multiple experiment recordings and submissions.
Limitations:
- Custom matches versus pre-spawned bots do not necessarily reflect logic in air simulator enduring confrontation
- For sake of rapid & reproducible testing, small (Air Domination) maps were chosen. This was done to ensure airspawn and guaranteed position of enemy aircraft to make it reliable to compare across different games. However, this fails to demonstrate the issues at proper SB EC distances (64 km x 64 km map at smallest)
- It is possible to overlay both Winter Stalingrad and Tunisia with their SB EC equivalents. This exercise is left to the reader & watcher.
- Due to short duration of tests, it is impossible to examine late evening (1+ hour or so SB EC matches with “Evening” time label).
- We lack 1:1 direct comparison of what happened before the patch, only VoDs from streamers and clips from clippers in either live matches or replays.
- Due to crew slots and crew skills, I tested Corsair 5/5 Expert against 0/0 Noob MB151C1. Difference in canopy may affect results.
- Youtube compression may not act as perfect representation of in game view. Video was recorded at highest quality I could manage.
- Recorded with Windows Game Bar
- No processing of video files done beyond Youtube’s own.
Tested maps:
Winter Stalingrad (Air Domination) - chosen for ease of spotting through contrails. (WS)
Tunisia (Air Domination) - Chosen for lack of ground clutter and no contrails. (T)
Crews tested:
5/5 Expert Corsair - chosen for high-vis canopy and being experted (E)
0/0 Noob MB151C1 - chosen for relatively high-vis canopy and zero spotting skills while still being pre-trimmed. (N)
0/0 and 5/5 correspond to keen vision/awareness.
Weather tested:
Noon, Clear (NC)
Noon, Hazy (NH)
Was tempted to test evening as well, but I’ve had a satisfactory demonstration with just noon clear and noon hazy.

I’m a VR player, and the game is basically unplayable for me right now as it’s especially bad in VR. Beyond the usual bugs that have not been fixed yet after the update.
I can barely see planes in AIr Sim unless they’re right infront of me. If I happen to be lucky and zoomed in I can maybe catch a dot in the distance or against the ground, but it’s almost inpossible to actually find people or properly keep track of them against the ground or even against the sky. It’s like the dot render / their plane is faded into the background, I can only make them out when they’re turning hard and forming winng trails or when they’re shooting.
So I basically have to wait for enemies to see me first, which they will every time because I’m in VR and a lot of these players aren’t.
I wonder if they are working on fixing this.?
Probably not. VR issues take a notoriously long time to fix. It took months for them to fix the vehicle X Ray mode hangar VR issue, which was a pretty small bug. Before that, there’s been multiple major updates that have caused major bugs for VR that took ages to finally be fixed.
This issue with the visibility majorly effects mostly Sim players, AND VR players. Which means it’s even less likely that there’ll be a fix in a timely fashion. Because Sim gets very little attention from Gaijin already.
Words of wisdom. I am not sure if they haven’t decided to kill sim battles already. There were no updates in the last 7-ish years, why would they bother fixing bugs? And say hello to little JDAMs with 10m radius dispersion. Now it is close to impossible to hit anything with them
Would be nice to know if this is even on their radar
They accepted a bug report so the least they are doing is acknowledging it. In the meantime, back to IL-2/DCS I guess…
Was really hyped for this update.
Some people talk about 3-4km, for me, people are invisible until they are at 400m or even less.
I usually NEVER have a negative KD, until this patch.
I have been postponing upgrading my SSDs for DCS, MSFS etc for years, this might be the week.
I was ready to drop serious money but right now, that is going elsewhere.
This issue was NOT on the DEV server, nor was the issue with the missile fuses and tracking.
So I wonder what could break all 3 things at once at last minute…
EDIT:
Maybe worth mentioning it (bc of differing experiences on spotting distances etc.).
I am playing on 4K.
And on a 43" Monitor, not even 2meters from my face, so I would HAVE to even see the miniaturized dots, but they are probably less than 1 pixel for me, until i can touch the other pilot’s face (literally)
Something like this happens every major update where the Dev server is completely fine, and as soon as it goes live there’s some really annoying bug(s) that take way too long to fix.
It’s just especially bad this time around.
Especially for Sim players, who Gaijin don’t really care about anyway.
Will have a look at it, I might have one replay to help with that. Tested it in Single Mission earlier (that troubles of a frontline airfield one) And it seemed a teensy tiny bit better, but still not really good and it’s very easy to loose an enemy to background clutter.
Seems especially prevalent over forests, even with contrast and saturation cranked up.
And I’m on a 34 inch 21:9 3440x1440 IPS screen, so if I have trouble others have it a lot worse.
Sadly I probably won’t be able to reply before tomorrow evening/night, it’s freakishly hot right now tomorrow it’s either going to be 37 or 38 degrees C, and it doesn’t really cool down at tnight. And I’m working. Which limits my time that I can run the PC without me myself neding cooling to a few hours each night.
It’s especially bad in VR, very frustrating. Have to basically fly onnwinter maps with low contrail ceiling if you want to reliably spot people, otherwise you’re mainly looking for people turning hard and producing wing trails or shooting / getting shot at by AA.
i’ve noticed a lot of games in Sim are super dead right now, people can’t reliably find eachother and many people are just zombing on huge maps like Denmark and Sinai because it’s much safer to do so without getting intercepted.
Only issue is that if we are only told they accept the update/it’s passed to devs for consideration, we might get a repeat of the bugs like so many times where such was said and we’ve received zero updates since for months or almost years now. Ruhr airfields are one such example just off the cuff.
It is why I was going out of my way to keep pestering Stona for a proclamation that not only was it passed to developers, but the developers themselves acknowledged it was a bug and have began to work on it (whether or not they got a fix is less important than “devs agree it is a bug and want it fixed.”)
For which, we finally got a response:
So I can stop stressing at least.
It appears the issue has been resolved
Hi everyone.
Can I get a confirmation for the fix?
so far the only improvement is distance at which the 1 pixel dot start to appear, which is around 8-9km in my case. Still, it is very difficult to spot the target, the dot maintain as it is even when I’m 4-5km away from the contact and only start to appear larger when I’m only 2-3km away from it.
And I’m playing in VR with the Quest 3
