Yeah a lot of things get stuck for years. For instance, the Hummel had been in the files about 10 years, before it was remade and released in this latest update.
Honestly, the only times I’ve ever heard about such concept have been “word of mouth” from people claiming it with no sources at all; I believe it only ever was a “theory” from some fan back in 2013 or so which resonated with some people and nothing more, which is why I don’t even take it seriously on the first place.
I like this idea. It allows for people who want them to look like they have been to hell and back and those who want that new tank smell to both get what they want. Most tanks I want looking fresh and serviced. However there are a few I would love battle scars on like the 7.0 American T95 heavy tank… it begs for heavy wear and deep scars.
I see, same dirt mapping, but is that what OP is talking about? Or is it the camos themselves? Or is it actually the vehicle model?
Saying the BTR and Hummels look like “low quality garbage” is a pretty harsh statement. And I don’t really see a quality difference between the T34 and the BTR.
It’s a combination of bad dirt models, light maps and the modeling of the actual armor. The Hummel model itself is fine but it looks like it was assembled and painted yesterday which is the issue. For instance here is what happened to the Tiger II models. The new model is higher quality, but lacks the degradation of materials like the original. (not my photos for first 2)

This is my image
Newer H model with zimmerit( 0% condition)
Ah yes, 0% condition, AKA totally ragged out tank straight off the Front line: No scratches, dents or other belmishes, Just slightly more covered in dust.
Tank’s used to have dents and scrapes modeled INTO them.
Now its just a boring bland overly shiny “Brand new” look.
If something like the Black Prince ever gets a remodel that removes all the damage, mud, and all that. Im 100% quitting the game.
The way that thing looks is one of the MAIN reasons i love it. Its beat up, its been abused and saw actual COMBAT.
HELL look at the new remodeled T-34s and IS’s, they are uglier, lost all their sauce, and are now Impossible to kill alot of the time due to dodgy armor modeling.
The easy way to nuke IS-1 and IS-2 tanks now is just to shoot the 30mm roof plate. You only need like 45mm of pen to go through it and even shells with like 40grams of explosives wreck the turret crew.
Ok with the 2 Tiger pictures it’s easy to see the difference.
The texture and normals is the only issue here then, since the tank in the 2nd image could be retextured to look like the tank in the first image.
I’m surprised they couldnt/didnt keep the old deterioration, since we have the camo condition slider. 0% condition should look like the first picture, and 100% condition should look like the 2nd picture.
The new degradation look just makes the camo washed out like someone used sandpaper on the tank.
Can custom camos have their down degradation texture? Would be interesting to see if the old version with the rust & all could be brought back as a custom camo.
They can have a custom single state degraded state. You can’t really edit the degradation model without editing the physical model. I don’t know why they removed that rusted state on that camo for the Tiger II. All camos just overlay on the default mapping, with the regular unlockable camos having a transparent layer that allows the degradation model to show through. The other kind of camos just fully overlay and block the original. For instance on the Jadgtiger, this historical GE skin completely overrides the default degradation model and even applies fake zimmerit. This Zimmerit is just the equivalent of a decal, but does a good job of faking the 3d look thats on the new Tiger models.
To be fair i more just want tanks to sit somewhere in the middle, so the camo / decals can still be seen with maybe a slight layer of dirt and some dents i guess, But some tanks look like they were left outside for like 50 years, especially the oldest tanks.
I dont really like how crystal clean New vehicle camoflages and re-made vehicle camoflages are. But it is better it just stands out alot since most tanks in the game doesent look anywhere as neat as them…
It just makes both stand out like a sore thumb in opposite ways.
We need a middleground for just how roughed up a vehicle should be while not making it too worn out nor too clean. And i feel like most vehicles that are new look too polished but older models look too beat up.
The “Camouflage Condition” slider also isn’t a great solution since it effectively favors premium players by locking something that shouldn’t be a feature behind a paywall. (I play with premium so i know how much of a difference it is with vs without.)
Why no one talks about how newest in-service Abrams’es are rusty. More rusty than T-34 from some babushkas shed… Nowadays million dollars military equipment like this is being treated with great care yet Gajin couldn’t resist making this look like trash unless you have premium account and paid camo.
