The current major update is a good demonstration why that should never happen.
The fundamental issue here is twofold - first, historical MM (Especially era-based), wreaks havoc with smaller nations
This is mainly for 12.7 and above or the high tier BRs at least, I wasn’t necessarily talking about the low tiers of the game and I should’ve specified, my bad.
Small nations would be on the side of the West whilst Russia and China are more than competent (only China as of now lol) in Air RB and especially in the future whenever we get the J-20, J-35A and SU-57.
The current major update is a good demonstration why that should never happen
By adding historical teams it’d force Gaijin to actually balance nations for once or one side would be steam rolled whether that’s team blue or red. The current system allows vehicles like the J-11A or Tornado F.3 Late to be forgotten as their team are more likely to carry and help with the flaws of the vehicles.
Hoo boy. Here is the thing. This means that queue times for any of the western nations will be extremely long, and balance will be more affected by the bad players.
It also just… reduces diversity, as you will only be able to fight that nation’s aircraft. Hell, I want to fight F-15s in a Gripen, I want to fight Mirages in a Draken, and I most definitely do not want to have to face wave after wave of russian and chinese aircraft with abysmal queue times.
I honestly think gaijin is also going away from historical esque teams because of the current world political atmosphere…
Reducing diversity would be something like making you fight every single jet ever in the same match on both sides. Oh wait. You can try to act like facing more things at once is diversity, but in reality it just means you have the EXACT SAME EXPERIENCE (mixed matches) 100% OF THE TIME
Matches were FAR more dynamic and FAR LESS PREDICTABLE in the PAST when we DID have nation matchmaking BECAUSE EVERY MATCH was something different… Operation Uranus was USSR vs GER/ITA and that was GREAT. Japanese maps were only USA/UK versus Japan and that was GREAT. Operation Hokkadio was uniquely only US vs UK and that was GREAT.
Best solution would be to have the option for historical matches, people who want them can play them and people who don’t can turn the function off.
And yet SIM is still an unbalanced mess, despite historical teams.
Only if it ONLY gives me historical matches. The problem with the current 12v12 switch is that it only gives you 16v16
Because Simulator as a whole is a entirely neglected mess, the introduction of the J-10A made the red team playable again but you’re comparing apples to bananas.
- Sim doesn’t have historical teams anymore and haven’t for a LONG while.
- Besides that, copypaste-athon made every nation the same in sim anyway.
Yeah, smaller teams option should be a forced thing with sized being from 8 vs 8 to 10 vs 10.
Not really…?
I would rather have some diversity, being able to sometimes have it, then be locked to only facing 1-2 counties. As an option, sure, but not as a hard lock.
Point is historical teams doesn’t necessarily force any kind of balancing. When balancing requires new vehicles that are the next major update away at best, at worst several major updates away, then you’re still leaving it a mess for players for those months.
we need this to be the top trending post, nearly all these ideas are awesome

Vehicles now a days are balanced through missiles and these type of ordinances can be added in a minutes notice, look at the removal of the R-73 from the MiG-29 9.13 and the introduction of the R-27ER in place a long time ago.
The difference between the F-16A MLU and F-16C is mostly made up from its ordinances and this isn’t something which requires major features which only take place in major updates.
The reds are struggling? Give China the PL-8B and Russia the R-77-1.
The blues are struggling? Give them later blocks of the AIM-9M or the AIM-120C-5.
Was profoundly non-functional and couldn’t be added. The thrust vectoring is still jank, back then it was a lot worse.
And missile balancing isn’t the fine brush needed to keep AIR RB in a good state, when some nations go from Magic 2’s to MICA IR’s, for example.
You’re still looking at weeks of data gathering to find out if your missile change even had the balancing effect you wanted, or the opposite, completely overshot.
Let me remind you that at NO POINT in this game’s life since 2017 (when I started), even in the most strictest of matchmakers, did you only have TWO options for team setups. You are yapping about non-reality. Let’s talk about reality yeah? The reality is that even with a nation matchmaker you can still form 6-10 different scenarios at any given BR.
Lastly… I never advocated for a hard lock. I just want the option to only play these sort of matches.

One major reason for its removal was balance and the other was implementation issues which are STILL prevalent in-game so much hasn’t changed. The TVC of the missile got slightly more stable but other than that it remained the same-ish.
Missiles are what make the future and define a vehicle at this point, we’re receiving different variant of aircraft and almost entirely due to its ordinance so this isn’t a bizarre thing.

I’m talking about the addition of new missiles and not the change of already existing missiles, they can use already existing missiles to have a rough idea how it’ll perform and use it as a basis for introduction. The PL-8B is basically just a PL-8A but with IRCCM and later AIM-9M blocks don’t change a significant amount.
Doesn’t matter, still need data gathering before and after any changes like that.
And that shouldn’t take more than a week at most and realistically less than that with readily available information or publicly known information - if Gaijin can pump unready updates then a small change like this won’t spell doom for them.
