5000+ hours in War Thunder

If you don’t enjoy it, don’t play it. Only play if you’re having fun. It is a video game after all. It blows my mind that some of you can sit here and say this and that about it when it’s your choice to play. Ya win some, ya lose some, usually shitty teammates but these things should be expected and if you’re not enjoying it then why bother? I should mention that this also happens to be a free to play video game… You could play this game for free for years, I understand if you wanna play at the higher BRs you’re gonna need to get at least a premium account. Think of it this way though, you can get a yearly premium account deal for about the same price as a new video game, and with the amount of new vehicles and features they add to the game each year it’s almost like a whole brand new game. At least in my opinion it’s worth it to pay them the $70-80 once a year. Anyways, that’s my thoughts on the matter. Wish you all the best fellow gamers
Good luck and HAVE FUN!!!

I have 3500+ hours, started in 2018.

Grind

Just don’t grind. Play for fun. You do enjoy flying and aerial combat right?

Teams

90% of the players are playing casually. They’re here just to put their cursor at the red name tag and press left mouse. You can’t expect them to do any kind of team play. If you want team play you get a squadmate that can coordinate with you.

Servers

Other than the occasional mishap with loading being stuck, the vast majority of sessions work perfectly fine.

Netcode

Oh god Gaijin please add a bit of delay to missile launches so they don’t teleport up my ass when the attacker lags a little bit.
Other than that, I played in a squad with people from three different continents at the same time, worked fine.

Demolition

Maybe Gaijin could do something about that. Your skyscraper example is a scripted event however, not very impressive. A better example would be Battlefield Bad Company 2. It had neat dynamic demolition mechanics.

Economy

They added bonuses for people that get a lot of kills. Yeah maybe the average player, which is a low bar given the highly skewed right skill distribution of the playerbase, can’t take advantage of that as much as skilled players, but you can’t say that there were no real changes.

The game is a lot of fun for me. I enjoy spending time in it, and I get a lot of good fights, and when team play happens it is great fun.
I’m not saying it’s perfect either, with severely overpriced premium vehicles, Air RB gamemode not fitting top tier, and a poor tutorial system (tech tiers should be locked until you pass certain competency exams, in my opinion). Biggest problem is the hacker epidemic in Ground mode however. Thank god I’m an Air RB main.

What if you only have an interest in late war vehicles? Like I only have an interest in WW2? Do you buy a top tier premium ,skip the grind and jump straight in at 10 BR?

If you have interest in only one set of vehicles, and you’re unwilling to use anything else, yeah the only choice you have is either to pay for a premium variant or buy such vehicles in an entirely different game, like DCS or IL-2.
Because you know what War Thunder is. It is everything between biplanes and missile busses, and if you don’t care about 95% of the content, then you don’t care about the game as a whole. I don’t see why you would play a game you don’t care about.

C’mon we know that isn’t true. Many have a passion for WW2 only and subdivide that to German armour enthusiasts or Russian Armour experts etc or just wanting to play good ol US of A out of patriotism and you have a very divided community indeed.

Many only do Planes ,Many only do Arcade and many of the younger kids only want post 80s or modern armour.

I tried planes and the game bores me ,I dont do Navy and have no plans to ,I dont like arcade and sim is a potential team kill hell hole.

I am lucky I can be Michael Wittmann early on but if you want to play a T80 or M1 then you have to buy premiums and go straight to the top the expensive short cut way or take a very ,very long and arduous road to slowly grind past the junk you dont want to get to the stuff you do want.OK you may have some skills when you get to the top but gee ,what a slog.No wonder many cant be bothered and no wonder Gaijin are tailoring the game to the direct entrants at top tier.

If War Thunder wasn’t about realism, then it 1- Wouldn’t be popular. and 2- its competitors wouldn’t increase their own dev budgets to catch up and hopefully exceed War Thunder.
DCS was behind in realism for 2 straight years from 2021 to 2023.

There is no other way to introduce historical battles than to limit the vehicle to what the sides used IRL.

The most popular realistic shooters are those without historical battles.
The most popular realistic tank and air games are those without historical battles, which includes DCS.
DCS is popular because the server hosts don’t do historical battles.

So if a shooter came along that did everything WT does but had historical battles you would turn it down because it had historical battles? Is that what you are saying?

You make it sound like a positive that WT has no ability to make historical battles work.I love it when people try to defend the games weak points by pretending they were done out of choice.I accept the game has its faults but spare us the BS.

Yes, as would most gamers that like realism.
The vast majority of gamers in the world that love realism hate replaying history.
Liking both realism and historical reenactment is a very rare and hipster thing, its not profitable.
Which is why game devs won’t do it.

You just contradicted yourself ,are you drunk Sir? What is battle reenactment then? Those who love attention to detail and realism and go out most weekends to recreate History.

Alvis …you are a silly sausage.

No, realism has NOTHING to do with history.
Realism is about physics… it’s all physics, what is physically possible.

There is no contradiction in my posts.

Lol, that’s such a goofy thing to say

Of course it has ,why do you think they dragged Tiger 131 into the Fury movie and worked it all out with the Bovington tank museum? To make their historical movie all the more realistic.People moaned like hell at the end of Saving private Ryan when they mocked up a T34 to look like a Tiger. Its called upsetting the Purists of which War Thunder has many.

In fact upsetting the purists is your specialty lol

The movie’s not realistic though, on top of that, making things historically accurate doesn’t make them realistic.
Point: COD2.
Least realistic shooter to ever exist, authentic battles.

So not having the bridge at the Battle of Stirling Bridge at the start of Braveheart is good thing ? As opposed to having the bridge? Maybe the bridge in the Arnhem movie really was a Bridge Too Far then? Haha !

I am confused, you are using word realism but you are talking about two things.
Battles which are copy if real historical events and realistic skins of the vehicles, or maybe oven realistic physics.

Well the only real realistic thing in this game are the skins, nothing else.
If battles are not based on hisotry it is unreal, that is just a fact. each nation has developed their weapons in diferent way to counter their enemy. In this game they all playing together. That is not historical, it is arcade.
The models of the tanks, hit boxes, etc are also not all there, that is the reason why it is not realistic, like there are still no autoloader modules but we have radiator, which basicaly does nothing when damaged, same as optics etc.
There are dozens of things which are making this game non realistic, I do not know where did you get, it should be realistic. Because the harder mode is called , realistic battles, ? No it is just easy and hardcore mode like in FPS games.

I just do not know what are you talking about, it makes no sense to me. Mixing of nations has solved waiting time, it was not changed because players did not liked it. On certain BRs was not enaugh players on the axis side.

But really , talking about realism an War thunder is nonses. There is no realism at all in this game, maybe only simulator is getting close and only in Air battles, for Ground no way. This game just has some skill based mechanics and it is not total braindead.
And because of this it can be manipulated, to be fair, but not via some excel sheets.

Realism in video games is the tactic of making things both possible and probable in the physical space.
Flight models, weapons, movement, etc.

History is the tactic of taking from history and implementing that into the game space. Nothing to do with realism.
This is how you can get historically accurate arcade games, and the most realistic simulators like War Thunder and DCS that don’t do history.

So DCS is an arcade game to you, and COD2 is a realistic simulator to you… got it.
