Bomber cover mechanic

Every air mode has two problems:

  1. Bombers are vulnerable and an easy target.
  2. Interceptors and other planes prefer to go to the center and test their luck.

Thats why we can’t have any interesting mission progression mechanic with ground targets and such, even in Nuclear Thunder we see that most people don’t care about new ground targets mission logic improvements and prefer to go to the center over and over again.

I want to suggest a “bomber cover” mechanic that will economically shape people’s playstyle into a more cooperative one:

  1. When you fly within 2 km of a teammate’s bomber you earn bomber cover “points” that are linked to a specific bomber you cover.

  2. When a bomber gets a reward for bombing - player that have bomber cover points linked to him get a reward correspondingly to amount of points they have. (A reward for time spent defending a bomber)

  3. When you shoot enemy planes, you get an additional reward according to bomber cover points you have. (As if you were defending a bomber from an enemy)

  4. When a bomber get destroyed by an enemy - all points linked to him disappear. (You failed bomber cover, so you lose all points that were linked to him)

  5. When a bomber crashes without any interference from an enemy - all points linked to him remain intact. (Bomber player can’t ruin your game and spend your time by leaving the vehicle after a bomber run)

  6. When an enemy kills a bomber, the enemy get a reward for all points linked to said bomber. (This encourages a hunt for valuable and covered bombers, rather than lone and easy target ones)

  7. At the end of the match you get a small reward according to bomber cover points you have (So players are encouraged to defend bombers til the end to make sure they are alive)

What will it improve?

  1. Interceptor players will be encouraged to follow and defend ally bomber players rather than going to the center and testing luck in a massive “ffa-battle” there.

  2. Bomber players will get a natural cover from teammates to counter enemy “hunters”

  3. Enemies will be encouraged to seek valuable covered targets to get their points by destroying them, rather than hunting lone bombers.

  4. Bombers could even fly in groups to get bomber cover points, even if they can’t bomb the target together - they will get a reward from each other’s bombing run and defend each other with turrets. There also will be less anti-teammate behaviour at the start of a match when players can’t divide all points to every bomber in the team, as cooperation will be more valuable than trying to bomb everything alone.

What if (Edge cases):

Q: I am an interceptor, I flew around the friendly bomber, but he missed all the ground targets and no enemy was around so I don’t have a defence reward. Am I doomed to get nothing for this match?
A: You will get a small reward for every bomber cover point you have at the end of a match if your teammate lives. You also don’t have to “defend” your teammate for the whole match, if you see that no one is interested in him - you can go defend another player or go hunt enemies, your bomber cover points will be intact and still contribute to your reward for shooting down enemies even if you are not close to your bomber. The only thing is required - the bomber should be alive.

Q: Won’t this encourage bot-behaviour of people flying in groups at the edge of a map?
A: The reward from the points alone, without any enemy shot down or a ground target destroyed, at the end of a match will be pretty small. While also, these kind of groups will be valuable targets for enemy interceptors, because even if they will shoot down only one of them - they will get a big reward for all the points they had linked.

Q: What if players will still choose to fly to the center and die in a ffa fight there?
A: The reward can be fine-tuned, so that it will encourage more players to at least defend their ally bombers a little, get points and fly away to “use them”, shooting enemy planes elsewhere.

I like all of this except point 4 in the most literal sense, as it can be easily aggrieved by a single enemy with either many guns or exceptionally fast firing ones just spraying in the general vicinity of the bomber and getting a lucky strike that clears all the additional points from the escorts.
Instead I would suggest that the escorts only lose HALF the cover reward should the bomber be destroyed, as it’s unreasonable to expect a bomber to not get some damage from a determined enemy.

Sounds good there should be a multiplication if multiple bombers group up (not by much but to encourage swarming) When there are 3 bombers you encourage more people to protect them.

It’s a neat idea and I think it would go a long way in making bombers more impactful. The game needs more teamwork incentives.

Some of the finer details just need ironing out. Failing to protect the bomber shouldn’t be a complete loss of points, since that makes bomber protection a gamble, dissuading allies from helping in what may be a fruitless endeavor just because the enemy was in a superior bomber-hunting aircraft that couldn’t be stopped in time.

Oh, yeah, destroyed, I made a mistake, it seems, I meant destroyed in the 4th one. I’ll fix, thx.

Well, before bombers improvement - I would agree, that losing all points may be bad. But since they announced structural improvements for bombers, I would insist on losing all points or, at least, losing more than half points.

Seems like they both made bombers thicker and weakened their defensive possibilities with reduced angles for turrets. So its a perfect target for defence, you would still be able to defend a bomber from an enemy, even if an enemy opened fire before you were able, because bombers now won’t be made of glass.

This can also be applied to AI bombers IF NEEDED, for gamemodes such as air sim, where people never do the “defend allied bombers” objective.

Could fly near them til they disappear and get a reward. Or fly near them and shoot down enemy fighters and get a reward. Etc.

Absolutely agree! I love flight simulation and WWII fighters, and I often find myself circling with the AI bombers for half an hour to defend them instead of going after other objectives, only to return to base with 0 points. I like the idea of escort, both for players and for AI!

Welp, no one interested, it seems. I thought it could be neat ;-;

Players won’t cover the bomber if they lose their rewards just because of things out of their control. They would have to be competitive rewards to the rest of the ways to make score in this game too. Other than that I kinda like the idea. +1

What things, bombers, especially with a buff, won’t be as easy target as they are now. When they leave the plane - I stated that the points will remain, so the bomber player can’t ruin your run.
