ZBD86A is a mechanized infantry fighting vehicle of Chinese origin. It is an upgraded and rearmed variant of the ZBD86, which is a reverse-engineered Soviet BMP-1. In the early 1980s, China purchased a Soviet BMP-1 and reverse-engineered it for domestic use and export sales.

In 1970, when the Soviet Red Army began to equip the BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicle, China was still in the chaotic period of the “Cultural Revolution”. Compared with the United States, Russia, and other military powers that have developed, produced, and equipped a large number of infantry fighting vehicles, China has developed and equipped infantry fighting vehicles relatively late. This is due to the fact that for a long time there was a lack of understanding of infantry fighting vehicles, and it was believed that it was sufficient to have armored transport vehicles to carry infantry in combat. However, it was later discovered that the firepower, mobility, and protection of the armored transport vehicle were very limited, and could not meet the requirements of infantry and tank cooperation at all, and the Chinese Army, as the world’s leading combat effectiveness, started slightly later than other countries in infantry fighting vehicles. Due to various factors such as the training system and operational thinking, the Chinese Army did not pay enough attention to the tremendous value of infantry fighting vehicles for a long time. This situation directly caused the Chinese army infantry to have no suitable transport and combat tools when cooperating with tanks in the 1979 self-defense counterattack against Vietnam. The Chinese infantry who participated in the war at that time were either in cars, Type 63 armored transport vehicles, or even directly outside the tanks. Due to the very limited protection and firepower of the car and the Type 63 armored transport vehicle, and the obvious lack of mobility, a large number of vehicles were destroyed by the Vietnamese army, and serious casualties were inflicted. And the tanks of the Chinese Army, which lost infantry cover, also suffered considerable losses, which were caused solely by the fact that the Chinese Army did not have a suitable infantry fighting vehicle to match the tank at that time. The bloody lesson woke up the high-level commanders of the Chinese army, and soon after the war, China began to develop special infantry fighting vehicles, and China only began to develop the first generation of infantry fighting vehicles in the early 80s of the 20th century, and the research and development unit was China North Industries (Group) Corporation, the project code was WZ501. The first special infantry fighting vehicle of the Chinese army is a domestic 86 tracked infantry fighting vehicle imitated from the former Soviet BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicle, because China has never developed an infantry fighting vehicle, the technical reserve is insufficient, in order to let the army soldiers take the domestic infantry fighting vehicle as soon as possible, the scientific research personnel of China North Industries (Group) Corporation decided to refer to the Soviet BMP-1 infantry fighting vehicle obtained from Romania, and imitate it on this basis.
