yeah for reference. I struggled to actually find a picture of the round but this one looked enough like a 45mm
i mean the APHE stats they used apart from pen is literally just BR-240 so they could just paste in BR-240SP?
It would suit better than what it has currently. And the reload would also be more reasonable reload time at around 2 seconds.
BT-5 / BR-240SP
The fire rate of 258 r/m in-game is roughly accurate. There is no mechanical limitation, to my knowledge, that would prevent the pilot from firing just a few rounds at that fire rate.

It’s probably the same projectile on a smaller cartridge with reduced velocity. But no, I do not support nerfing the Yak-9K nor Yak-9UT. All that will do is 1) make it just as pointless as all other cannon CAS and 2) hand the whiny trash another win they will only proceed to pivot onto screaming about something else in an endless loop and continue to plague the game.
Instead, why not buff the counters to the cannon CAS in general, extend the same generous modeling the Yak-9K has to all other cannon CAS, and encourage people to solve their “problem” themselves while being prepared to intentionally and viciously say “you had the tools yourself but chose not to use them, it’s a you problem not a game one, game’s not all about you, grow up.”
For example - give all non-radar SPAAG lead indicators on aircraft out to 1.0kg distance on a bone-stock crew, and up to 1.6km for an aced crew. Yak-9Ks and all other cannon CAS need to get fairly close to accurately hit things, therefore they must enter into this lethality envelope to be effective.
I would also support extending this same system to all commander pintle MGs and all SPHs with VT shells loaded. I would also support making all HE-TF rounds function like HE-VT shells to give the heavy flak trucks like the German Flakbus, Russian Flakbus, VFW, British QF 3.7 Rambus their real purpose of shooting down planes.
Empower people to help themselves. If they refuse to change their ways its now their own fault, and such trash should be laughed out of the room publicly - utterly humiliated into total silence, just like the “History Channel Tiger/T-34 Drivers” collectively were years ago.
Or you know instead of all these many changes just remove the non historical overperforming shell and the main issue is solved
I’m not saying that it was slower firing in real life. After all the cannon was derived from an AA but considering the stress that the cannon put on the airframe it would make sense to put some sort of cooldown ingame to represent that.
Yes please, do nothing about Yak-9UT!

Because it’s not the main issue - it’s the first truly effective Cannon CAS added in many years that hasn’t been butchered by endless whine-nerfing, and because people have gotten used to whine-nerfing all cannon CAS into irrelevance, having one actually be and remain effective is getting under the skins of the folk used to it being terrible.
So no, my argument will always be “Why not leave the Yak alone and buff all the others up to its level instead?” Every other Cannon CAS does not shoot nearly as straight, and when paired with just about every other platform being an underpowered brick that has little to no defensive options, just renders them functionally worthless compared with “just pick the best fighter you have with a 500kg bomb attached.”
What that entails is firstly to make all other large caliber plane guns shoot perfectly straight under no uncertain circumstances. If maneuvering and aiming the platform is already hard, having your gun not go where you aim it renders the vehicle functionally worthless.
Secondly, this entails adding missing ammunition types to some guns. For example, the German BK 3,7 on the Stuka G1/G2, Hs-129B-2, and BF-110G-2 is physically the exact same gun as the 37mm Flak18/36/43/44, yet the plane gun lacks the APHE round the SPAAG currently have while the SPAAG gun lacks the APCR round the planes currently have.
What I care about is variety in gameplay that is actually functional and worth using. And for many years there simply hasn’t been much, if any of that. Bombs have been repeatedly neutered to the point where you have to land them within spitting distance to be useful and pray there isn’t some random object “shielding” the target from it. Rockets were obliterated in 1.71 alongside HESH and never recovered. HEAT-tipped rockets were long overdue and by the time they got added they were double-nerfed from both that rocket nerf and the HEAT postpen nerf of 1.67. Cannons have been mostly relegated to obscurity since many years ago with few exceptions.
sure the issue is the yak still overperforms and is just too strong against ground targets
Some people just want their “fun” to be the only one in the game and don’t care about balance.
All of the nerfs/buffs could be skipped with just a TO mode as people who like combined aspect of the game, could just play in combined mode without Gaijin having to fit the gameplay to the liking of majority in the existing mode.
But nah, we need more nerfs and buffs! Sure after 13 years of doing just that this time it will be different!
Oh I am well aware of that. We have been arguing with these people in many a thread before.
If we did actually get a TO mode it might even be fun to check how absurdly buffed the planes could be from time to time. But we all know it’s sadly not happening
Hey boy… The Yak-9K/T is an above-average fighter. You’re fundamentally mistaken.
Not to mention the EXTREME overheating of the BK 3,7. Which lasts only 6-8 rounds, while so many other guns have 14-45 rounds befor overheating, all while it is a heavy barrel AA gun, with increased airflow.
The issue isn’t that “the Yak is too strong.”
It’s that every other Cannon CAS is too weak and most players are too conditioned to it being weak, thus they lose their shit the moment one of them isn’t.
Hence why my recommendation is what it is - aggressively rebuff all the others and let strong Cannon CAS become normal. At least all the other non-Yak platforms are pretty comically easy to shoot down with about two brain cells.
I am aware it’s “a bit above average,” I’ve flown and spaded all the Yakovlev prop fighters. I found the 9K and 9UT rather funny because unlike all other Cannon CAS platforms, neither is an insufferable brick that you’re constantly fighting against to even line up with a target, nor are you fighting against the weapon of to get it to shoot where you want to shoot. It’s the first Cannon CAS in many years that’s actually good.
I view all crying about the plane as illegitimate whining, particularly because I have played the game long enough to see quite plainly that nerfing CAS doesn’t solve a damn thing because the problem here is not the CAS, but rather the people bitching about it. Those same people will merely find something new to scream about when that kills them, then get that neutered too, repeat ad infinitum. The people crying about it want to get the Yaks neutered to the same horrid degree as every other Cannon CAS platform to where few if any sane players ever bother using it.
I instead want to see every other Cannon CAS platform proportionally buffed up to the same level as the Yak-9s are. Because then if everyone has similarly competent platforms to shred stuff with, none of them are overpowered anymore.
It has indeed been a hot minute since I flew any plane with the BK 37 equipped, and even when I did fly them I never stood on the fire button due to usually terrible ammo supplies. Thus I wasn’t aware it was gimped like this, but given the history of folk like some of the above posters whining about CAS, I’m not surprised either.
