That’s just add-on weight for the Trophy active protection system tests, if I’m not wrong these weight add-on was never issued to vehicles in active service, also it won’t really help much because those areas are not targetted consistently but make the vehicle heavier as it’s now.
lower hull is targetted consistently and on aps sep v2 cheek armor is somehow weaker than m1a2 sep v2

those are not armor add-ons, they are weight plates. The tank in the picture is the SEPv3 test bed. (SEPv2 with weights strapped on it to test the weight distribution for the SEPv3). The plates carry no real protective value, they exist purely to replicate mass and center of gravity shifts so engineers could validate the suspension, engine/transmission, and turret drive under the new load before the real Next Generation Armor Package (NGAP) went into production SEPv3s.
